??? What Students Are Saying ???

Animoto.com is getting good vibes from Purdue’s students. In the first presentation below, a brother of second year CmcS Ph.D. student Nwokedi mashed up pictures of his recent visit to his home country, Nigeria. In the second, incoming sophomore Ericka did a mash up of logos for a company she worked with this summer.

It Never Hurts to Ask: Nwokedi posed the following to Mark Cuban, the somewhat eccentric billionaire owner of a Financing.

“Hey Mark, I was listening to an entrepreneurial program where you told the interviewer about your road to being a successful entrepreneur. One thing you said was that you taught yourself about computers and at meetings, you often knew more than other people who had computer degrees. My question is the following: When trying to learn anything (e.g. computer stuff) when are you satisfied that you understand it? Is there some internal benchmark you use that allows you to be confident enough to get in front of people who should technically “know” more than you? ”

Mark Cuban’s reply: “im never satisfied that i know enough. I presume someone always knows more and that motivates me to learn more as well m ” Good response and lesson for all of us. Be humble! Hank

If you can teach yourself to learn about computers than good for you. Some people are not technology advanced and just learn what is taught in school. Mark Cuban’s response is great and can be applied to almost anything. You have to keep learning so you do not fall behind in what is available as resources or what is going on at work.

I like Mark Cuban’s reply. It shows his strong ethic on pushing the limit in this case on computer knowledge, but not in the name of knowing more than everyone else, but pushing himself. His response kind of reminds me of Theodore Roosevelt’s quote: “speak softly and carry a big stick.” He’s not gloating over his acquired knowledge, but he’s made sure that he’s kept at it.
