TechCrunch says, “Here’s what FIQL has done - users can create a playlist on FIQL, or import an existing one from iTunes or other services. FIQL will then go out and grab music videos from the third party video sites and add them to the playlist. You and others who view the playlist can then play the videos.
FIQL has also created an embeddable player for those videos that can be dropped in to MySpace and other social networks and websites, or add it to their Facebook application. So now, if you have a favorite playlist in iTunes, you can simply export it to FIQL and get an embeddable player back that plays the music videos of all your songs. ….
Technically FIQL is still subject to copyright claims. But they’ve pulled themselves one step away from direct contact with the content owners, who are mainly focused on the sites that actually host the infringing content. Case law is still developing in this area, but they are under little real threat of litigation.”
Hank says, this is really cool! What say you????

Hank- your right FIQL is AWESOME! I was just playing around on the website checking things out. You can search for whatever music you like. Find a certain artist and play the music with no hassel. Also the website isn’t bombarded with advertisements. I`m already a member. For me its better than Itunes. You’ve got instant access to all kinds of music and you don’t even have to pay. I LOVE IT! Also this goes back to personallizing stuff. People can put a music video on their profile that expresses their feelings for the day. This has great potential for Myspace and facebook. I think this website will be big. Its kind of like choose your on MTV videos to watch whenever. My question for the website though. How will they make money? Charge for membership? I don’t think this website lends itself for advertisements. I guess i`ll just have to wait and see what they do.
Bookmarked!
I don’t understand why the uptown girls is not the actual song and the video is just clips from an anime show that line up with the music. It makes me wonder about the reliability of this thing because it says that the song is by Billy Joel, but I’m a like 99% sure that that is not Billy Joel singing that one. If they can get it to be a little better about getting the correct song and having the actual music video to the song then it would be a cool idea.
I guess it could work, i’m just not overly ecstatic about this website. Is there anyway to store these playlists for personal use if the need would arise?? (and i’m not talking about virtual storage, i mean on ur harddrive) i’m sure this is were the legal tango begins, but wat is the use, if u have a great playlist that is on the internet, when you are lacking internet connection or are a computer with dial-up or a slow modem? maybe this is just the thoughts of the un-technologically advanced people, Hank, but i’m not digging it.
Its a very cool idea but I am not sure if it can dodge the whole legal bullet (if they really haven’t sorted out the whole copyright thing). I think this would be a good way to get the word on some bands you might wanna show off to your friends as well as a cool place for AMVs (I am assuming you can upload AMVs since uptown girl was an AMV). I give the site points for creativity but I am doubtful on the longevity of it.
In response to a couple of the above comments:
1. FIQL is an aggregator of information from other sites, just like Google or http://www.blinkx.com/ we looked at in ENTR200 classes yesterday. So you may make a playlist, and as videos for instance are challenged and taken down, I suspect you may have a dead link, unless the same video pops up on another site, which is OFTEN the case.
2. Alex’s comment about the rendition showcased not being Billy Joel - the choice was made by the person putting the 40 Best…. and is not a fault of the site per se. Look at all the other original footage of Cleawater, Simon et al - good stuff.
3. For Genevieve, as an aggregator, FIQL hosts none of the data on their site so you can’t download the actual video ones and zeros; however, you can either embed the player as I did for this blog, or link to it. If you want to, you can go to the source and download the source video to your hard drive, assuming downloading is supported.
4. For Kyle, by not hosting the stuff they are aggregating, they stand a good chance of dancing around legal issues.
I think this is pretty cool and since they should be able to maneuver around legal issues, I don’t see why they wouldn’t make money. If the seventeen year old girl made over a mil making little designs for myspace, FIQL can target the same people and more.
Yeah I agree with Luke there, they seemed to have found a very clever way to dogde the legal bullet and if they want they can make tons of money out of it. I think it would be awesome (although I’m not sure this would be legal, but I guess it would be) if they made a software that you could download and then use it to find playlists upload playlists,… It would be like iTunes, but the songs would be free to use. Ofcourse this service does not offer free song downloads, but it’s pretty close and it’s legal and since so many people nowadays want free music (legally) it’s perfect (until ofcourse the video or whatever gets taken off and as Hank said you probably get a dead link).
I think FIQL is a really cool site. I love music, and I think this is a really cool way of letting people discuss and share music with others. The only downside to FIQL is that it is just another step towards cutting out the middle man of the music industry, which is the record label industries. Musicians make most of their profits on tours not record sales, and artists are staying rich without people buying their albums, because file sharing is spreading musicians names on its own, through new technology like FIQL. File sharing systems such as FIQL is a perfect example of a disruptive technology, it is a new technology with more capabilities. I think that FIQL will be a success if they can fight the legal issues.
This is pretty cool. Although I had a little trouble finding the songs that I just searched for. Maybe it’s just because I’m not registered, so I can’t find the individual songs. This is definitely a nifty idea. My roommate and I were having a good time reminiscing on the songs of the past this evening and even getting up and dancing to some of the old favorites (ie, Lou Bega’s Mambo #5). Had I read this blog a little sooner, we could definitely have made use of some of the dance song playlists.
I love this…its a great idea when they get over the legal thing I think
they could do very well..one thing I don’t agree with is the Go West in the
King of Wishful Thinking…they should never be allowed to make a music video
again.
This is really a service that beifits all both parties in the music industry. It helps the record labels and music sellers because people can discover music that they will want to buy or recreate a good play list. It also both entertains the listeners as well as introduces them to new songs.
I know that my freinds and I make playlist for different activities (ie. driving), or genre (classic rock, hip hop) and then share them. We could have definitely used this in high school (though people of all age groups can enjoy this).
I tried this service and it reminds me alot of Imeem but sometines when you search it doesn’t give you a playlist with that song on it. If you have alot of time this is cool…I’m not hating on it though it is better than IMEEM in the fact that it has all complete songs….with IMEEM having copyright problems and having to reduce most of it’s song to a 30 second snippet.
This is perfect! I have been looking for a website where i could find videos to my songs i have in iTunes. I’m not knocking iTunes but its just some songs that iTunes dont have video’s for. Now that I have stumbled across this website (thanks hank) i can satisfy my music needs at my demand. I would say this is service is 10X’s better than any other product that I know about.
I got practically intoxicated by this site! Although I can find the same thing in You Tube, it is convenient to have something give you a compilation of videos.
