Brutti Boy Is A Star on UStream.tv

The Canon GL-2 is now outfitted with the necessary 1394A cable for video input (Lafayette Electronics, $15.96 + tx, 6 foot cable), and I ran two test videos. The first is a UStream.tv test; the second was captured directly into Windows Movie Maker, then uploaded to Viddler.com as a wmv file. In both cases, I really really have to work on audio levels, but the proof in concept is evident, it works. I promise we’ll go on to other than uStream.tv-related topics shortly. A picture of the camera-computer hookup is also included (bottom) taken with a Canon xti camera. Hank

I want a golden retriever. They won’t let me keep one in the dorm room. So I have a golden fish instead.
Goldens are, IMHO, the very best. Hank

The picture quality is much better on Viddler in comparison to Ustream. However the volume is barely audible on Viddler. But i’m just guessing that it’s a technical difficulty.
I want a real pet, my Betta bores me.
Technical “challenge.” I had the mic volume up too high on the laptop. Need to tweak it in concert with the volume controls on the camera to reach some kind of optimum. The differences between the two video streams is interesting too. UStream.tv is setup for live streaming; Vidder to play back movies rendered at a much higher resolution. Thus, the difference. Viddler had much better input. Hank

Wow there is a huge difference in the picture quality between the two media players. Viddler surpasses Ustream by a long shot!

  4. 4 Kyle Heldman

I have to agree with Kristeen. Viddler’s media player is far ahead of ustream.tv’s. The quality is much better, as ustream is very blurry. It also required buffering at times while viddler’s advanced media player was excellent quality and interactive the second that Hank’s video finished.

The video on viddler looks a lot better than the video on ustream. The ustream video seems to have some pixilization where the viddler video does not. I think the technology in viddler is much better than the technology in ustream.

The audio on both isn’t that great as you stated, but there was a HUGE difference in quality. The movie uploaded to Viddler was 10x stronger than that on UStream. By the way, you’re dog is soooo cute!

I have to agree with everyone about the quality of the videos. There was a clear and apparent difference with Viddler and Ustream. I, like everyone else, preferred Viddle over Ustream. If I were watching more of these play back movies I would definitely stick with Viddler. However, like Hank said, if I wanted to get the live scoop on certain events like township meetings, local coverage, etc., Ustream would be the way to go. After reading more about Ustream’s features, I can better understand that certain broadcasts, not covered by national t.v., would be made avaliable with a site like this.

I also agree with everyone on the video quality differences. I have never used windows movie maker, I have used iMovie and I know you have a mac Hank so why didn’t use that program?
I don’t presently have an Apple-based notebook, and grabbed a Toshiba notebook with enough horsepower to do video that I had in reserve. Thus MovieMaker not iMovie. I can bat either way. Hank

This is going to be my dad’s birthday present. He spent two years organizing our baby videos. Now he can put them on dvd.

Both videos are very good, but the Viddler one does have better quality. It is really cool to be able to record and upload videos like these.

  11. 11 John Fodor

This is a good video camera. The visual quality is good. The audio is not too great but not bad. I wonder what he is going to stream. ~John Fodor

What a nice camera, hopefully you can work on the audio or maybe plugg in a different microphone device. I hope after his blockbuster debut Brutti got to take his nap !

  13. 13 Ashey Mastela

I think that is a very high tech cool looking camera. And Brutti is very adorable, and cute.

Viddler definitely looks better. Not only is the quality of the video clearer, it loads faster too. Ive got a slow connection and I started both at the same time just to see what would happen and I finished watching the Viddler version before the Ustream version even got off the starting block. I like the camera too.

  15. 15 Travis Falls

The Viddler video looks very nice! The other looks kind of pixelated.

  16. 16 PETE

    Gorgeous Dog Hank-

  17. 17 Samantha

I am so impressed with the quality of the video!

  18. 18 Kimberly Endicott

You can really tell that the Viddler video is much better!! It is much more appealing to the eye and has a much more clear picture! Technology is so cool, just none of it wants to work for me!!

  19. 19 NVail

I agree that Viddler is much better. It took me forever to load the UStream video. Viddler loaded a lot faster and didn’t have any interruption.

  20. 20 Ritesh

Viddler has better video quality but poor sound, but cosidering different market sectors of Viddler(for recorded stuff) & UStreamTV(for live streaming), one needs to pay price :)

I think the previous posters have pretty much nailed the differences between the two videos, so
I’d like to comment on the idea itself. The ability to create a video in a short amount of time
opens a lot of doors for people with new ideas. I wonder what the online video market will look
like in 5 years, and what new uses people will find for easily creating online videos. I think
it will certainly help out Wilketi! (spelling?)

  22. 22 Ryan Wilsey

Haha, I love Brutti. What a name, too!

I’m really impressed with Viddler’s image quality especially when compared to youtube. Also, kudos to you for the video editing to export it to a nice format. What format do you use to submit to viddler, and what codecs/settings?
Viddler will accept several different input formats as posted on their site. I generally post wmv since that is the default output of MovieMaker. Re codecs/settings, across the board they are default settings. Hank

  23. 23 Heather Vaughn

As everyone else has stated, Viddler’s video quality definitely surpasses that of Ustream. The video on Ustream even froze for a second while I was watching, but that could have just been my HP.

Oh and I may steal your dog. He is so cute!
I’m certain Brutti wouldn’t mind, but his “mother” would be crushed as I would be! :-) Hank

  24. 24 Megan Ellis

wow the difference is amazing. viddler is 10X better! the picture quality is fantastic

  25. 25 Amanda

I agree with many of the others - the viddler video quality does appear to be better, although UStream.tv’s was not bad at all. It seems as though Brutti Boy is not the only star on UStream.tv and viddler now, Hank! Seeing Brutti makes me miss my Shelty even more : (. I wonder how we could incorporate UStream.tv into the classroom? I know we already use viddler for our mid-term video interviews, but is UStream.tv in our future somehow as entrepreneurship 200 students?

  26. 26 Josh Miller

I agree with everyone else in the sense that there is a difference of quality between the players. but I’m confused about what exactly you did. With UStream.tv, was the video an actual stream from the cam to the internet? If so, then I would say the quality is decent for that since you have to take bandwidth into consideration when streaming. I would much rather have a lower quality video of a lecture that I can interact with rather than a higher quality video that has been prerecorded.
