That is a very interesting design, I had no idea the XO was such an efficient laptop. I actually assumed they would have cut every corner they could have on the materials to keep the price down, but apparently not! That being said, I could never see American’s cranking their laptops…
It does speak to your cloud computing effort, but with cloud you have to remember there are a crap load of servers out there that are not as efficient at this laptop, however, using these along with cloud would still be many times more efficient than everyone in the world toting around desktop replacements that get about 30min to a charge using some of the most power dense batteries we have.
And gOS 2.9 came out, I am currently downloading it, it has a lot of ties to MySpace and lets you use myspace apps… I don’t have a myspace, nor will I, but I will mess around with it… The UI is a total rip off of Leopard, but thats fine by me… Apple may have a thing or two to say about it tho!

Very cool presentation. I also didn’t know the XO was as efficient as it is. Very cool design process. I think it would be cool to develop other devices with the same ideology (the device needs to be able to be used “remotely,” recharged with a small solar panel or hand crank, and last for 5-10 years). Thanks Hank!
I too really enjoyed the presentation. I wasn’t thinking that the XO could be as efficient and green as it is, but that’s another added benefit to this already incredible process. It’s neat to see what can be designed when certain stipulations (couldn’t be too expensive, low powered, replaceable lighting, etc.) are put on the project. Too bad the laptops we buy as consumers are not modeled and designed to be this friendly, re-usable, and streamlined. Instead, we buy our laptops at a high price and, when in need, turn to repairs/replacements/add-ons that wind up being very costly. This is definitely an awesome initiative!
I like the idea of this. Don’t know much about computers but this is innovative! ~John Fodor
very interesting, sounds like a pretty good idea!
I really liked this idea, it goes along with everything that we learn as we become entrepreneurs, very innovative and extreme brainstorming seems to have come up with an awesome idea. I was really impressed with all of the certain features that have come out of the design.
This is really cool, I didnt realize how little power a computer can use if built the right way. My computer has if i remember right a 800 watt power supply to run it lol.
If we can really get people to support the XO and really support it, I think this is one of the best ideas I’ve heard in a long time. This is something that is actually out there to make the world a better place not only to help people, but also to help the environment. When I first heard about this, I thought it was just another computer invention, but now I see how great this idea is. The process is great, the computer is cheap, and the whole idea is just awesome.
A lot of research went into this piece of equipment! The multi battery charger sounds simular to the elevator pitch that Brian gave at the competition a few weeks ago. This is very interesting.
After watching this presentation, I realized that this little computer XO can help people and environement. It is definitely worth investing money and its a great idea
This seems a lot like a car analogy to me. The XO is the fuel sipping small foreign car and our computers are the V8s of the world. Sure the fuel saver is more efficient but the big old V8 is just more fun to drive.
This is such a great idea. I, along with everyone above, had no idea that it was so efficient. The amount of power usage compared to a laptop along with the environmental impact it has is incredible. If everyone got on board with these than it would make way for other devices to “go green” as well. Just think of the drastic changes that would go on if the majority of the world were to go green. There is a lot of innovative ideas to be discovered in this particular area.
Also, it’s really great that the XO not only provides the less fortunate with computers but is able to be utilized as a source of electricity. The XO is able to solve multiple problems instead of just one.
Amazing! I would love to see how they are utilizing these computers in the classrooms and how much it is benefiting the children.
I agree with Rob on the car analogy. I’m not sure what benefit we can give these kids unless there is educational software standard on the Linux system, but this will go far.
My group in ENTR200 did our five minute ad hoc on this company. We had initially said that the company and what it is doing with these laptops is amazing, but now I think it is so much more than that. Not only is the one laptop per child campaign having an unbelievable impact on the children receiving the laptops, it is also green. This is outstanding, especially when compared to a normal laptop and/ or PC. To benzmacx: you may be forgetting the simple fact that in America we have access to electricity and such “luxuries” whereas these children don’t. The crank is simply for a rainy day or at night when the solar power for the battery is running low. This laptop definitely gets my number one vote for most innovative of the year thus far!
that was actually very touching. it also great that the laptops are so good for the environment.
It is very interesting to watch/read about things that are becoming more environment friendly. I’m really amazed at the things they have been able to alter to ‘green’, and things like these computers are just awesome!
I think this computer would be a great product for someone that just needs something to check their email and read blogs. With cloud-computing, they can use many of the free apps, and not have to worry if their comp will run it. I was not aware at how green this XO was and think many of its hardware features are amazing.
This is a really cool idea. It’s amazing to see that even laptops can make a difference in our environment and in children’s lives.
