How does 50 gigs of free online storage sound? www.adrive.com offers just that. The Cloud is coming here! Adrive requires name/address/email to sign up, but other than that, seems to work quite well. Much slicker than using Purdue’s email to store “your stuff.”
ADrive users are able to share any of their files in their ADrive account instantly with friends, family, anyone they choose, while keeping their unshared files private. By clicking on the ‘share’ button, a unique URL is generated that the user can then share with anyone they choose. The recipients of these shared files may click on the URL link to view or download the file. I have shared a mp3 file, Bad To The Bone here; try it out.
Reuters notes: ADrive is utilizing technology from Zoho(R) to allow users to edit documents online, directly from their ADrive account. Users can now edit word processing documents and spreadsheet files stored in their ADrive account by simply clicking on the ‘Edit’ button, making changes to the files using the Zoho Editor, and saving changes directly to their ADrive account without having to re-upload a new file.
Check it out and use it if the shoe fits. Works for me. Hank

I have to say that I have been a little leary of storing things online in fear of that my stuff might magically disappear. However, with that being said, I’m getting kind of tired of having to bring out my flash drive. I have my Purdue H: Drive mapped to my personal computer so that I can trade files back and forth pretty easily but, the problem still remains that I need to be logged into my name on campus to get the info. So congratulations Hank, I think I have finally converted to online storage.
’bout time! I’m getting real tired of dealing with Krannert and their computer system and having to find my H:. Working with Zoho is a great idea and well worth the partnership. But I wonder Ryan Rendino, according to our textbook, is partnership the right word or is this some sort of joint venture?
This doesn’t look too shabby. I’m still a fan of just storing stuff on the extra server space I purchased though, but for those that don’t need a website, this looks nice.
I’m not so concerned with the fear of loosing my data. I am more afraid of data theft. Some data I prefer a server admin. not looking at. However, if the people at Adrive were smart, they would be able to link to your data that way if a user uploads “Bad to the Bone”, while another copy is there already, a link is created to their file, creating roughly half the space, but at the same time, creating privacy issues.
Is it possible to make the files you upload in this website public? Been hard to find web storage that will host big files.
Other than that, I always welcome different ways to transfer files from place to place. Having limited ways to transfer files is bad because for example, if the purdue webmail server goes down then I won’t be able to access my files.
I’m signing up right now.
Hi-Tech…well actually just computers…aren’t really my thing, so these types of products/ideas usually aren’t very interesting to me because I either don’t undertand them or I see no use for them to me. This particular product is different. After seeing the demo in class it seems pretty cool. I still have no use for it, and probably will never use it, but at least I understand it.
This is a great idea. It is great for people who aren’t all that tech savvy and don’t currently have server space. The problem is marking something that is somewhat high tech to people who not technical can be difficult.
Awesome. How are they able to just give anyone 50 gigs for free? I wonder if it will stay that way.
The demonstration of this in class today really showed it justice. It was really fast and pretty cool how it works.
I would upload my music library, and subsequently have access to my music from any computer, anywhere. Great tool.
So I actually showed this to my parents and my dad is pretty excited to start using ADrive
It is so hard to keep up with all these technology changes, but I think it is pretty awesome. Makes you wonder how much will have changed in five years.
ADrive is awesome. I’ve been signed up for a few months now and I have a couple files shared. They haven’t lost anything so far and I haven’t gotten any spam either. It’s fast and easy. But be careful of what you upload (read my message to JT below).
Steve: I doubt that you have zero use for this product. Haven’t you ever wanted to share a file with multiple friends? Or even backup some info from your computer (if you haven’t then you should)? This will allow you to send files to multiple people with just 1 upload and you won’t be limited to 5mb like you would be with email. Also, this allows you to upload it whenever you want and then they can download it whenever they have free time as opposed to both of you having to be on [file transfer program (ex. AIM)] at the same time.
JT: If you read the Privacy Policy (http://www.adrive.com/privacy) you will quickly see (read section A and H) that they claim rights to all data you upload (which could cause them some problems if you are sharing music/movies, haha). So, you can assume that they plan to sell your stuff to other people. This could potentially mean that your essays for school could show up on primeessays.com or other clone sites. So be careful of what you upload. Of course, I could easily be wrong and this could all just be put in their for their protection. But, I don’t see how those googleads can pay for that much harddrive space and bandwidth.
I too agree with Jim in the fact that this is indeed a good partnership. Teaming with zoho provides users a fast and easy way to access their files. I’m not sure that I’m going to take advantage of this just because I’m set for now with my external hard-drvive. Otherwise though, free storage is always a plus!
I’m wondering if this could be used in terms of storing business information and being able to easily access and distribute the files? This seems like a to good to be true offer. I bet there going to charge you once they get enough people using there memory system.
This is a pretty good feature. i wonder if you can store any files such as video, because then you can watch movies that you have saved from anywhere. ~John Fodor
I’ve been wanting a way to share large files for a while now. This seems like a pretty simple solution, I’ll have to try it out!
I think Amit brings up a very good point. The Privacy Policy says that they own everything thats on their servers. This is dumb from their perspective, and dangerous from yours. First off, they technically own anything you put on there, so, don’t put anything on there that you don’t want to be publicly available. However, this is probably just another case of companies over restricting their EULA inadvertently. The EULA for Safari for windows said that you could only install it on a Macintosh Computer. Odds are they will never actually use anything you post, but they do it for some liability concerns, which confuses me because now they claim to own any media that you put up there. You might post up a music file that you do not own (or you do but the EULA of that will say you do not have permission to transfer ownership), yet they now claim to own it, which makes them liable for anything illegal that you put on the site…
Other than that, sweet, 50gb of free space, too bad comcast is the most useless pile of crap internet service EVER.
Jim
I think that this seems like a pretty good idea!!!
This is a very good idea!! But I am curious if you can upload large files? and also this is great because its very fast and easy to access. I am going to sign up and see if i can uploade my music and videos
its pretty cool. i think i will probably be seeing more of it and more of zoho too.
This is a great thing that has came out!! I really like it!! After you explaining it I feel i could use it and it would be very helpful to me. Sometimes I have problems with leaving my work at home on my computer and then I have to email it to myself. With A-Drive this would solve my problem because I could access my files from anywhere!! SO COOL!
I created an account just for fun, but then yesterday I actually had to use adrive which really saved me. I created a powerpoint on my purdue account and needed to get it home, but the file was too large to send through my email. It was nice to have an drive to store things that I can access from anywhere. I just uploaded it to adrive and downloaded it from adrive when I got home. Thanks adrive!
I actually am suggesting this technology to the company I work for. The reason is that we are consently having to grab drives to transfers files that won’t fit in e-mails from one computer to another. I am working on files where just the pdf’s alone crash because when your opening them the are just so big and bulky. The other part that would make this easier for my company to have the files we needed instead of every time we needed something yelling over the the other person in the office can you send me this. So hopefully this works out and we have have the whole office sharing. So thanks Hank you probably made one of the biggest problems in our office maybe run smoother.
This almost seems like it is too good to be true - FREE storage space. Yes, as some have mentioned, some people prefer to store things on the extra drives they purchase. But, when something like ADrive comes along, it’s worth a shot to try it out if it will save some money. This also comes with really interesting sharing capabilities, which I find only add to its value.
I would definitely use this but for nothing personal maybe just music movies…a news letter or something but nothing private such as official documents, copies of federal documents and so on. Like Hanks mentioned earlier this is free memory but it is just floating around out there in cyberspace.
Anyone else as impressed with ADrive as I am? I signed up for an account after I read this post. 50GB is truly unbelievable. Looks like they’ll be releasing version 1.0 soon. The free accounts will remain, but we’ll be able to upgrade for more storage. That’s going to great! [Hank says: I have found it to be invaluable in having files at your fingertips, whether on different computers in our home, or between home and the classroom. Really an awesome product!]
