E-Documents

plasticlogicNewspapers in particular are becoming extinct in the digital world. Plastic Logic has a device coming out in Jan 09 that completely blows everything digital away. Rather than blather away about it, watch the 5:55 video below. It will be well worth your time! It is one uber device! Students should love it. Hank

WHAT?! This is awesome! And its like indestructible! Haha AND YOU CAN USE IT FOREVER. Well not forever but it has a amazing battery lifespan. This is awesome I really would like to purchase this. I just would like to know how much it is. and would like to know how many slides you can have at the most.

This is a very inovative technology that can eleminate the use of paper and there for is a green product. Also this would be a great tool for almost anyone who knows how to read and write.

Wow that is awesome. I was wondering when technology likes these would come out. Where everyone had their own thin flat device for documents. They did a very good job researching plastic technology instead of looking at the trends of lcd screens and just using compression to shrink the chips and everything. I cant wait to see what how the company improves this technology in years to come. Very very innovative!

Robust is really cool. It is a very good way to store a lot of documents. But what if you had a document thats 100 pages long and you wanted to read the last page? Do you have to slide your finger on the surface 100 times?

Very cool, it just needs a stylus for input, not a keyboard. If you want to replace paper you need to keep all of its functionality. e-readers are dead in the water until something revolutionary comes out and this is a step in the right direction but it is NOT it.

First is the stylus and second is because it really doesn’t take advantage of the fact that it is a computer! Sure replacing paper is great, but you can do SO much more with a computer than you can do with paper, 3D graphics, interactive text books…

Its a step in the right direction, and if it had a stylus I would even consider buying one for taking notes and the like. It still will not explode the industry though.

I disagree with the above poster. If they wanted all of the extra feature then why not just create a computer program that does all of that. The point of this is that its lightweight easy to carry runs on a battery for a decent amount of time and replaces all of that extra paper you have. If you added all the rest of that then it would get heavier and that defeats the purpose

As funny as it sounds, I saw an idea similiar to this on a TV show that aired about a few years back, so to see it actually come to life is really neat. If it had a stylus to go with it, I think it’d be pretty neat, but then again, its a touch screen so why not use the touch screen keyboard it has? Pretty soon, electronics are going to replace all the paper and stuff that we use so they’ll be plenty of saved trees…so long as this device isn’t too expensive. At the same time, With all these new electronic devices and car’s coming out, I wonder if the new crisis will be us running out of Lithium than oil or trees.

Plastic Logic is on the right track to building a better business world. By producing a product that is highly mobile and can hold all the standard information found in your briefcase, they can capture interest in those of us who need a little organization. If the product could offer certain things in color, that would make it even more appealing. However, I’m sure the development is well on its way.

One thing I notice about Plastic Logic is that it is black & white. Here in the IT world, why don’t they develop with color also? Although it has long battery life, one day if you forgot to charge it and what if the battery runs out and can’t look at the business data and important facts… I think it is risky to use it..
I would rather use paper than this device.. !!

Really neat technology. Looks still in its inception but I am sure once it comes out in the market it will develop rapidly. I would surely buy this one….

  11. 11 benzmacx

John, its fine if you don’t want to make any money, but I think THAT defeats the purpose.

    Jim

  12. 12 Rachel Farr

This is a great idea. It is lighter than a laptop and flat. This would be nice so that you wouldn’t have to carry a bunch of notebooks and papers around. I think this would be a good investment.

  13. 13 Phil Liao

Although it has the capability of reading business documents, I think it doesn’t matter where I’m traveling for business, I’ll be bringing my laptop with me. On top of that, if I’ll take the time to put business documents into that, I could put it on my laptop as well. Then I could edit it and use an AT&T device to get internet access anywhere and communicate with my co-workers that way.

I wonder what’s the price tag on this thing? There might be an incentive for me to buy it if it was well priced.

Does it have wireless capabilities? Even though it’s brightness level is not high and has no color capabilities, I am impressed what a long battery life it has.

This is the future i guess, No longer will I have to worry about cumbersome newspapers. Wouldn’t it be great if they adapted this towards textbooks, and instead of buying new expensive textbooks, you could just buy the file, and load it to your plastic logic. Awesome!

  15. 15 Scott Wilson

thats really cool. i dont remember what the price was on this thing, if it was mentioned, but it reminds me a lot of the amazonKindle. Im sure this can do more than the Kindlet but the kindle is $359

  16. 16 John Heritage

Jim I’m not sure I understand what you mean by your statement. I am not trying to avoid making money but if they were to add all of the features that you wanted it would require a lot more memory and capacity than it would take to store some documents and scanned files. They are trying to make this targeted towards a certain market and that is business owners who are constantly on the move and find it a hassle to carry all of their papers with them.

This allows them to carry a single lightweight but durable screen that they can access all of their documents from. Adding interactive textbooks would be completely useless to this market as would 3D graphics. You have to remember that you have to target your product towards are certain market or market niche otherwise you’re spreading yourself too wide and are going to just drive yourself under.

Yes later on if this is a success then they can create more products with these features targeted towards other markets but for the time being when was the last time you heard of someone flying to a meeting on a plane and found the need for a textbook or 3D graphics? Never, they are much more likely to be reviewing their documents and this makes it simple for them to do just that.

This is an amazing product. I think that it could possibly replace paper in the workplace. I also am curious as to whether there is a menu to access the files or if you would have to slide your finger 100 times to read the page to need to read, like Yuhi said.

  18. 18 Brian Lee

This is a fantastic idea, completely revolutionizing the idea of paper in offices and the workplace. It is a lot lighter than a laptop and thinner. The only annoying thing was having to swipe your finger exactly on the board. I feel like I would mess it up and end up having to swipe lots of times.

  19. 19 Michelle Tuccori

I think that this is a very innovative design. It would not only help us go green but it could possibly replace the use of paper. The timing for this product is great. I think another cool thing that could be done with this product is possibly changing the whole outlook on subscriptions to news papers and magazines. instead of having a magazine sent to you house it could be sent to this device and replace paper magazines.

You all are bickering about the wrong thing,,,,

The point of this product was to replace paper. I think they’ve got the right idea. Even though everyone’s got laptops, we’ve still got paper everywhere. I think this has a lot of potential but it’s going to need work. They need to consider how we interact with paper to make this product completely successful. Papers are usually handed from one person to another. Like a flyer off the street, a newspaper from a stand, a handout from a teacher, a business card from an associate. Things like this are not always expected. If they could find a way to have the uploading process as immediate as handing somebody a sheet of paper, then it would replace paper. The way they’ve marketed it, its like a massive picture viewer. And you can draw mustaches on people.

Subscribing to magazines and newspapers would be a huge benefit. It’s kind of inconvenient to download a newspaper, then upload it to your ,,, sheet thing,,,

The idea needs some work, but it’s heading the right way.

  21. 21 Jared Allen

I agree a stylus would be nice. I will probably consider buying one even without the stylus depending on the price tag. I love to read the newspaper but hate how you have to carry it around and it gets a crumbled up. I also hate how newspapers make so much noise when you are trying to read them. What a great idea.

  22. 22 David Speicher

Luckily the product sells itself, because this guy could use some work on his public speaking. He seemed unnatural talking in front of everyone. Might be worth hiring someone to do the presentations.

  23. 23 Jon Perl

I am very excited for a light e-document reader. I get pdfs all the time I need to read, and reading it on my tablet is an eye sore. Once this becomes color, then they’ll have a real market.

  24. 24 Julia Johns

wow, this is awesome! This will be great for the “go green!” Everyone wants to cut the use of paper. It also is nice that you don’t have to carry a ton of stuff in your bag.

  25. 25 EvaBrown323

I think this is a good idea, heading in the right direction. However, I was unsure from the presentation how much material could be stored on it. It’s important that the papers put into the device have some kind of shelf life, because the reason I generally keep paper copies of documents is to save them for a later date. Also, I prefer to have paper copies for meetings and class, so I can quickly scribble notes if I need to. Although there was a way to attach post-its, this device did not seem allow changes to be made to papers easily.

  26. 26 Sunxiaochen

ingenious. Flattened USB drive with decent memory. Sturdy body and a durable screen. this is a glance into the future. This will definitely save lots of trees.

  27. 27 Chris Jones

Plastic Logic is really onto something here. I think that they should move into other types of digital display systems though; I was far more impressed by their new display technology than teh reader itself.

  28. 28 Nwokedi Idika

Wow. This is the future. I.am.SOLD. Amazon is going to have to work uberly hard to trump that one.

  29. 29 Genaro Marquez

It’s pretty cool for its purpose which I think is minimizing the amount of papers you have to carry with you. I do wish it came in color. They might have mentioned something about that, but if I did I missed it.

  30. 30 Savannah Englert

WOW! Technology is crazy.. This is really impressive and I am positive that it will become insanely popular. It is also a huge plus that it is virtually indistructable! I am sure it has a pretty big price tag on it though!!.. This is almost like the ipod but for paper.. This could eliminate the use of paper just like the ipod has done for CDs.

  31. 31 mallory govert

wow, definitely neat. it is so different from a laptop… in every way. it is something to think about investing in because i think it is 10x better.

  32. 32 Matthew Kelly

I am a proud owner of a HP Tablet PC and I must say this machine has amazed me at times for presentations and homework. I think this Plastic Logic path is great technology. I’m not sure if it is actually a time saver….you have to get all of those paper docs, pdfs, etc. onto the device….so what if you didnt get it in an email- then you would have to scan, etc. I think it could be utilized greatly in the medical field, used by doctors and nurses when dealing with patients. It also should be color- i only saw the B&W in the video. but none-the-less this is great technology

  33. 33 Kyle Conley

10x better? I like the sound of that and from any other laptop on the market, it doesn’t compare to this
