Coupious
Posted on February 12th, 2009 20 comments
In my ENTR200 classes @ Purdue University today, Arthur Nisnevich (Purdue CS 08) and Michael (Purdue CGT 07) are going to present their new product line, the first of which is Coupious. Their web site states “Coupious is a mobile phone app that gives you on-demand, location-based mobile coupons. No need to search
for offers with a browser, no need to find zip codes, no reason to memorize text message
short codes. Simply run the application on your cell phone, watch it automatically retrieve
coupons via GPS, and click “Redeem” to save money!”The purpose of this blog is to provide you, blog readers, a chance to give them feedback after you hear and see their presentation in class. Hank

After seeing the presentation today in entr200, I could definatly see this becoming a success. The pay per participation system seems like it could becoming very profitable, growing exponitially once more and more companies use coupious to host coupons.

The presentation was great. These guys seem really determined and I think they will do big things. They have a good idea and they should be on there way to success.

This overall seems like a good idea. I personally don’t really ever use coupons unless someone forces them on me or they bring significant ($10 or more) savings. This is mostly because they are a big hassle to keep track of, and generally lead to slower service at a store. I also spent years as a cashier and hate those “coupon ladies” who come in with a stack of 10-20 coupons, hold up the whole line, and flip out if you miss one 25 cent coupon. This has also lead to me not really using coupons. If coupons were fast and easy like this, then there would be a much higher chance that I would use them.

I originally thought that this was going to be a browser that you would go to but now I know it is an application on the phone it sounds like it will be a big hit. I don’t see why phone companies would not want to add this to their line it would be a great feature. I also think that it is smart for merchants to get involved with this. This is a way for them to advertise and sometimes you do not know what restaurants or stores are in the local area and this app will help businesses become more noticeable. Sometimes businesses are located in shopping centers or off the main roads and people are not aware they are there so this will be perfect for them. They seem to be aware of what it will take to get things going so it will be interesting to see how it turns out.

I’m excited to see if this catches on. Once people start usinging I feel it will take off. The founders seemed very determined to make their product great and I really liked that they don’t automatically send you a text. I would HATE that!

The two founders in class today sounded very confident about their new venture. Like Hank said a few weeks ago, most start-ups evolve because they’re filling a personal or peer need, this sounds like this was another example of that.
With such thorough planning it seems like these guys are going to make it, eventually.

I think that this is an amazing idea. Once all of the bugs are out of the system I think that it will really catch up. Companies will love it as well because they will be saving money in printing costs. I see a very bright future for the company.

Here’s another company that seems similar and is already operating, http://www.cellfire.com/ It seems like that company will be difficult to compete with. They both use similar ideas where all it takes is showing the screen of the phone to the cashier. However, I don’t know it the cellfire programs uses GPS to update location automatically.

It seems like a great idea. I like that they will be cutting down the amount of paper coupons because that is a pain to remember you have it. I know that I won’t be using it because I will not have a iphone or one listed as the types. So having that limited market seems hard, but again most people will want new technology. Again this idea is filling that gap and want by people so it hopefully will take off.

I thought that their presentation was really good. Its pretty neat how thet came up with their idea so fast at a coffee shop.Their business will be successful except that I know many places do not accept Internet coupons. But if they can find a way around those problems they will be successful.

I really liked the presentation of today’s class. Both days really know how to sell their product because after listening them talk about what they are doing I’m interested in a product like this. I imagine sure many of us are in the same position and think the say way because just by having their application could start saving money wherever we go.
If I were a CS major I would love to apply in order to start working in a company like this but I am really not much into writing computer code.
I wish them the best with their new start-up. Hopefully they will get what they want here on Campus and then at a larger scale. -

I really liked their idea and their future goals. I think their idea has big potential to succeed in the market. Right now, they are in the early stage so they do not have everything set up but I believe soon they will be able to accomplish what they want.

Like everyone else has said, this does sound like a pretty good idea. I would like to have this on my cell phone. It would be very handy especially for college students who don’t have a whole lot of money and could stand to save a little here and there.

Hello Friends,
I like your idea about mobile coupons as you fulfill a gap in the market…
are you planning to go global? i think there are lot’s of colleges in UK, India, China, Germany, Australia…. even the students their would use this… just a thought, you guys are best to judge what’s good for you…
Well Good Luck to Coupious,
and we’ll see you sometime in the Business World….999

Just last night, I was standing on the sidewalk at the Chauncey Hill Mall thinking, “Where should I eat tonight?” and if my cell had buzzed and said “Coupon for…” it would have made up my mind for me and even saved me money!

After seeing that presentation yesterday I really think it’s a great idea. Like they said you look at coupon books and then pretty much just forget about them. I think coupious will be very successful and I cannot wait to see how it progresses.

As I told Mike after the presentation, I think should incorporate rebates in their business. As there company grows, they should be able to convince large companies like Sony, Apple, etc. to use their coupon system (with rebates).

The presentation was well organized and impressively professional. It was easy to see that these two are motivated about their idea and want to give it everything they’ve got. One thing that might be interesting is to start at a more national level with certain headquarters. Like in Minnesota the headquarters of Best Buy, Target, General Mills, 3M, Land O’ Lakes and a lot of others that are nationwide that allow you to have a faster test market and give these national companies a new informational technology for marketing.
