  • Who Is Robin Rodenberg?

Robin Rodenberg is the wife of Dolph Rodenberg, the brains and guts behind The Energy Detective (TED)I blogged about this past Saturday. Seems Dolph had a problem – his wife, and her habit of leaving home without turning off the lights. It bugged him, and in the early nineties he set out to do something about it. Yes, it’s taken that long for TED to become a reality. His story is a classic one of an entrepreneur at work. Dolph is not a technical guy, and was repeatidly told by electrical-types that what he wanted to do, lower his energy bills by providing visual real time energy consumption to his wife, couldn’t be done. He personally searched patent data bases and found nothing  was on the books. It took time, effort, and a willingness to persist to bring TED to market. One of the most insightful was how he got on board the young programmer to write the code for TED.

Read about Dolph and his TED here; it is relatively short and well worth the read. Hank

BTW, I have had TED running linked to my 8.9″ Acer since Saturday. Our power useage is terrible! See below. I have software running to read TED remotely via the web but need to figure out what hole I need to punch in our router for it to be public. Standby.

BTW#2. Based on the feedback obtained from my request for input regarding your GPS experience, yesterday I ordered a Garmin 760 from Amazon.com.

    1. For our group project, we are doing something that is similar to this idea to save energy consumption in households. The main difference that our product will show is exactly what devices in the home are using the energy. This will help homeowners to visualize and see the specific products that are using the most energy. This is such a great idea, because we all use more energy that we really need, and just reducing a few of the electronic devices that are turned on can reduce electric bills and consumption. There is a great focus on energy, and this product along with our product idea will help reduce the energy consumption in each household by helping those to see exactly what is using up all that precious energy.

    2. What a novel idea! Being able to view the difference that is being made versus just hearing or talking about it will make a much bigger impact in someones perception of how much energy they’re actually wasting! I’m sure this will catch on very rapidly.

    3. I think that this is a brilliant innovation.I can personally relate to his situation because I’m in an apartment with four other roommates and the lights are always on. I always come home to the lights on and no one is using them, or even in the house. As a unit we are forced to share the light and electricty utility bill, but I personally believe that if people could actuall see the amount of energy that was being wasted, then they would be more cautious.

    4. Along with the others who have commented, I think this is a wonderful idea. I believe that seeing the amount of energy used by a product would really open my eyes to how much energy I use in my everyday tasks. I know that I am guilty myself of leaving the lights or TV on when not using them. If I actually realized how much energy they are using, I would more than likely be quicker to turn them off when not using them!

    5. I like to be shown why I should change what I am doing to something different. I don’t like being told just to do something, I need proof on why the other way is better and this shows you. Like Casey said, we are all using more energy than we really need to and our device will actually show you where the most energy is being consumed.

    6. Dolph Rodenberg’s story perfectly illustrates the journey of many entrepreneurs. He developed a product that he himself would use and did not have. I think that’s important to remember when developing a prodcut.

    7. I like the fact that he was persistent and eventually found somebody who said that it could be done. I am not technologically savvy either. It is great that he knew his weakness and got somebody else involved who was strong in that area.

    8. This is the perfect entrepreneurial scenario, fixing one of his own problems. I know my family has this problem, often triple checking and maybe turning around before vacations to see if everything is off. This would be a very helpful product.

    9. I think this product is great. I live in an apt with 3 other roomates and we always wonder why the bill is so much higher some months than others or how much leaving lights on costs or what things use more electricity than others. I think this would answer alot of our questions and settle alot of debates and arguements. Plus I’d find it interesting just to see what things consume more energy and how to be more useful.

    10. I’ve always wondered how hard it would be to make one of these things… guess its doable.

    11. Our project is somewhat similar to this except we are focused on a different resource. This is a very good idea for lazy people like my room mates.

    12. You have to admire when somebody has that kind of persistence to make a dream, even something this simple, yet brilliant, work for them against all odds. Props to Dolph! All those pics are making me want to get one of these gizmos even more than I indicated in my post on Saturday. Seems like a sophisticated system!

    13. If only everyone knew exactly how much energy they use. I personally don’t like leaving the light on, but I know my room mate always leaves it on. The thing is we don’t get charged separately for utilities so we have no incentive to turn off the light.

I think it is good for people to find innovative ideas from their daily mistakes. Most of the time, the ideas that people find from their daily mistakes work well. If those innovative ideas combine with entrepreneur’s effort and passion, then it becomes a huge success.
