  • Hank’s HTPC + System Is Up & Running

Posted on March 9th, 2009 admin 21 comments

I have the HTPC running that I have mentioned in this blog and in my ENTR200 classes this semester. The purpose of this blog is to share “how it’s going” so far. But first, as background, keep in mind that I am convinced that in the near future digital entertainment will quickly move from the Comcasts and DirectTvs to the internet. As the internet pipe is built out, and there is lots of $$$$ of this budgeted by the current administration for this, more early adaptors will come along. Here’s a quick status report:

    • The HDMI works great, @ 1920 X 1080 and audio. However, it didn’t out of the box. There is a check box for Adobe Flash to use hardware acceleration. With this checked, 1920 X 1080 didn’t work, defaulting to a screen with a diagonal upper left one color, bottom right another. Stumbled on this fix.
    • To get out of full screen, in say Hulu, you have to hit the Escape key. The Logitech diNovo Mini doesn’t have a single use ESC key, and it’s difficult to access the combination in a darken room. Guess I’ll get to know it by touch as times goes on. Other than this, the Mini operates as advertised.
    • Running Windows 7-64 which is working well without any problems – to date at least. For whatever reason, this system is FAST! The one terabyte hard drive is divided into a 250 and 750 gig sections. May put Ubuntu and Boxee on another partition.
    • Running an external Linksys WUSB300N wireless via a USB port. Windows 7 did not have the drivers for this device, and had a little difficulty finding them – Linksys links were busted.
    • System runs perfectly without any dropped signal, pixelation, or other difficulties, while our IPTV main TV in last night storms was breaking up
    • My wife Linda & I watched two movies and a show on Hulu last night, full 42″ screen with nary a problem. The commercials are short, and in some aspects superior to the droning on regular TV. Aside from Hulu.com, here are some channels I’m checking out: Veoh.com, joost.com, channelchooser.com, worldtvpc.com, vimeo.com, and wwitv.com.
    • One last glitz, the DVD/CD tray hits the front cover of the housing and won’t open. May have to replace it with a different laid out CD drive.

Today’s challenge is to break the system down to components, remove the existing 42″ plasma from the Hooker cabinet, and properly install everything. Hank

    1. I agree with Hank when he says that people will begin to move away from Comcast and DirectTv. The internet is much less expensive, and you have more control on what you watch. You can watch television shows and movies at anytime, without much commercial interuption. From what Hank said, he may have had some trouble installing all of the equipment and he is very technologically savvy. If he can’t get it installed easily, then I know I would have some problems. I am sure that there are some kinks in the system that still need to be worked out, but I still believe that this will be the next wave of how we begin to watch tv. I am going to look into this to see how it could fit into my tv watching.

    2. I hate cable TV and would much prefer using Hulu.com and the likes, but the internet at my apartment isn’t fast enough to allow that. Plus, I couldn’t live without internet, but I could live without cable TV. If I could watch TV over the internet… my television would be gone.

I like the idea of getting away from cable TV because paying to it is expensive. The interenet is less expensive, the only problem I have with it is the installing of the equipement. Being how this idea is still new there are going to be glitches to the program, so I’m going to keep tabs on this to see how it progresses and pans out.

Ever since you showed us Hulu in class, i’ve been using that instead of watching normal cable. It’s so much more convenient. Within the next 10, I bet television will converge with cable networks and typical cable providers will be out of luck.

    5. I hope you never have to watch TV again. Are you using a mid tower to house the computer you built? How does that fit into a hooker cabinet with proper cooling?

    6. Vincent Witzel

Sounds like a neat setup, Hank! When everything is said-and-done, I’d love to see a picture or two :) !

    7. Autumn Wilson

Wow waht a sweet setup! I wish I could do all that and watch Hulu! I had seen it advertised on TV but never watched it until class. I would love to be able to watch it instead of real TV with all the commercials. Also I agree with Vincent, you should take some pictures and maybe explain to people like me how we can maybe set something like this up at home!

    8. I have to agree with everyone when they say that TV is going wireless. I mentioned once in class that I thought that soon there would be no need for Comcast or satellite television, but rather be able to hook your computer up through your television using a HDMI or other hook up. We will be able to watch what we want, and when we want without having to pay a single dime! This is amazing, but I don’t see these services being free in the future if they really start stealing a significant market share from the cable company.

I love my direct tv. Personally i think watching tv on a computer is a pain in the ass. Granted being able to watch it when you want to is nice and not just having to watch whats on. But ive tried watching movies through my computer w a VGA cable from my laptop to tv and it works but its just a pain and the picture sucks so does the sound. Im sure your system Hank is alot better and different but I dont see and i personally hope the internet doesnt take over tv tomorrow or anything.

    10. Hank, I think it’s great you have such a cool setup. Cable will be no longer soon, but Nick raises a good question, if that happens, will the internet services remain free?

    11. Lauren Withers

It sounds like you have a really good setup. i like cable but it is really expensive. As long as the quality is good, keep doing what your doing.

    12. Margaret Kendrick

This sounds great! I think you did a great job choosing different items and coordinating them really well together! I will try to keep this blog entry in mind for when I get a home theater system! Congrats!!

    13. Sound awesome. Cable is extremely expensive and the features aren’t even worth it. I think that the internet is going to take over the world and this is the start. Everyone depends of cable tv for the latest news and breakthroughs, but now they can rely of the internet.

    14. Allison Yeater

WOW…I’m glad that there are people out there who take the time to try this stuff out….I wouldn’t even know where to begin! But it does sound pretty cool and very up and coming. Before we know it internet will run everything…..

    15. Kelsey Cataldo

i sure hope it does!!!! i’m so tired of Tv’s!!! it’s WAY more Convenient to broadcast shows and movies online :) )) I myself, don’t have enough time to watch my favorite times at their times, so it’s sad that I have to wait like a week later to catch up online! :(

My hope is that in the NEAR future they will broadcast everything online to work with everyone’s own time management/agenda :)

    16. I feel that in the near future we will still be enhancing the idea of the TV. I do believe maybe in 40 to 50 years that people will move to completely using computers and laptops for their entertainment but I still feel that people like the idea of sitting around the tv and enjoying shows with friends and lap tops dont allow for mass groups for people to watch together since the screen is so small.

    17. Jongho James Lee

I agree with everyone. I think it is good to stick with internet because it does not have advertisements and it is less expensive. With internet, people can watch movies like television. They can download the movie and connect the computer to the tv screen. This way people can watch the movie in big screen.

    18. Felipe Burneo

Hank, are you a developer that is interested in using the Windows 7 and all those free OS?? I would like to know about the benefits of that new OS because they say it is going to be very good not as Vista.
The whole configuration seems to be awesome to watch movies and to even play video games with such a nice HD-TV.

    19. This is very interesting. It would be amazing to get completely away from cable and have television completely ran online.

    20. Trisha Delsart

Sounds like you got things under control. Im glad everything is working out for you. Its great when things work how they are supposed to.

This is amazing. I love the cabinet except for the noise it makes when it goes back into the dock. I am interested in this and i hope this is not the last blog about this as Hank said today in class.
