No, this isn’t about Schwarzenegger’s girly boys; it’s about a young lady from Austin, TX named Marlo Adelle Greta who runs GirlyWhirls.com, a barette-making buiness from home. Her web site states:

“Marlo started making hair accessories to go with her outfits at age 14. When friends requested personalized hair clips, Marlo enlisted her mother to help with sewing them and eventually introduced GirlyWhirls to local businesses in downtown Austin. As demand increased, Marlo turned to Craig’s List for employees. The employees were trained at the family home provided with patterns to trace. By the third year, Marlo was selling in 12 boutiques in Austin and in California, as well as online. In 2008 Whole Foods Market ordered her new line of romanticized feather hairclips with a vintage flare.

As Marlo continued to grow her business, she was involved in giving back to her community through volunteer efforts in PALS and teaching art at Laguna Gloria Art School. She traveled to the Dominican Republic to teach art to impoverished children. With three employees, Marlo plans to continue her business while in college and to expand the online business.” She is quoted in the link below as stating: starting a business is “a lot easier than having to go find a job. I make my own decisions, and the harder I work, the more money I can make. That’s a cool thought – it’s all up to me.”

I was lead to this young entrepreneur by a recent article in the WSJCupcakes and Cattle Greeding: Teens Turn to Summer Start-Ups.” Seems that high school student summer employment is forecast to be at an all time low. Will it be any better for college students? I think not. Perhaps it’s time for readers of this blog “to do something.” Hank

    1. That sounds really cool. She seems likes she’s very young and has a good idea of what she wants to do. This is a great story and example of how small things can really turn into great business if you stick at it and believe. I think and hope that she’ll do just fine.

    2. Your never too young to become an entrpreneuer. This girl at the age of 14 began a business that has become very succesful. Who would think that girl’s hair clips would make someone so much money. Stories like this are inspiring for young and old entrepreneurs alike.

    3. It’s kind of a slap in the face to see these 16 and 17 year-olds making successful businesses when our class is struggling at times with a theoretical one. This is a very motivational article, at least for me. It makes me want to get out there and start something just to see.

    4. Thats awesome of her. She has the right mindset on things.

    5. Its amazing to see how these days young entrepreneurs ranging from 10-17 years of age come up with such great and successful ideas to start and run a business! Job well done!

    6. That’s cool to see how successful one can become by taking a hobby to the next level.

    7. It’s great to see her taking the initiative to get her own company up and running. Finding a summer job is definitely no easy task, she’s 10 steps ahead of most of us.

    8. You may have trouble in classes but that is probably because you don’t know what you are looking at or just aren’t interested in the business idea.

Find something you care about and are interested in and then just go do it. Be cautious, but just start and don’t stop.

I was in Hank’s 200 class a couple years ago and I remember struggling a little bit. Now I have a company with 3 other students and we have been profitable from the start. We even got 2nd in the BDM Business Plan competition last year and received a grant from the MacArthur foundation last week in Chicago.

Just get out there and start working guys, you can only learn so much in the classroom.

Cool idea I guess seems kinda strange but I guess I’d run it as long as its in demand. But as far as finding a job, I work at a hospital and im guarenteed a job as long as i say I want to be there. I only work summers as landscaping though. But I have never really tried to find a job, dont know what its like…

I always like to see when younger kids come up with ideas and they actually get them out in the public. Being an entrepreneur doesn’t have an age limit and it’s great to see kids exercising their minds. The barette’s must be in some kind of demand for her business to be going so well. Lucky for me I don’t have to worry about a summer job. I got a paid internship this year that will keep me busy.

    11. This just proves with less stress you can come up with a fun and innovative idea. A lot of potential entrepreneurs just look way to hard and put too much pressure on themselves.

There are so opportunities out there. iwould have never thought abou this. This is an amazing idea from someone so young.

    13. I think it’s awesome that she went with this idea. Who knows what this could grow into for her?

I think that it is really great for someone so young, to be successful. Its amazing how a simple idea can turn into a life long career. Good luck to her.

This sounds like a typical situation for a start up…Someone has a product that they want, they make some for themselves, others notice and like the product, they start their own business. It’s nice to hear that younger people are taking the initiative to start their own businesses when they are not having any luck finding jobs.

Another instance of somebody turning a hobby into a business…I truly envy everybody who manages to do this and I can only hope I’ll be able to pull-off something similar in the future!

I’m strictly amazed when I hear about younger people doing what would seem only an adult would do. Starting a business at such an age is very impressive! I’ve heard of numerous other stories of people similar in age to Marlo Adelle Greta, that start up an organization or business for a cause or effort etc. To have such initiative is a key element to be doing something like this. Nice job!

This is a really cool post. I think I might go buy one now!

I definitely agree that she is going above and beyond by fulfilling a dream of hers at such a young age.

    20. It IS crazy she’s so young, but it goes to show that when you have an idea, ACT! It may not be a “new” or “unique” concept that you choose, but if the passion is there, and you feel you can do it better than the next competition, DO IT!

    21. Kelsey Cataldo

Wow! What a great use of creativity, on her part…plus, i’m impressed as to how much she seems to be doing with the success that she’s acquired!

i think that there are alot of good, creatiive, “untouched” ideas out there…..and there are alot of bright, creative kids that could easily “call dibs” on these ideas.

    22. What a facinating article. I’m looking for a marketing expert to help with a project, could you help?

The part of this blog that captures my attention most is when she says, ” starting a business is ‘a lot easier than having to go find a job. I make my own decisions, and the harder I work, the more money I can make. That’s a cool thought – it’s all up to me.’”
The factor the faces me is the belief that if one is passionate about a start-up then its tha hardwork and the guts to just move forward with it!
      Easier than finding a job…?
I would take the risk while in college.
This is the place where we grow and learn:)
