Stroh Brann, a fellow in arms at Purdue, recently sent me the following two links from The Economist which indicate that indeed opinions are changing. You decide. Hank

    1. I always go with open source software when possible. GIMP over Photoshop and Textpad over Dreamweaver to name a couple. The only time I buy software is when I absolutely have to for a class.

    2. I will generally take the open source alternative, but only if I wont get any compatablility problems… Still use and buy MS Office because I have had problems with Open Office files in MS Office. Generally I consider the work I do in office too critical to have display problems.

I also really want to be running linux, but every time I try I cannot get my mac feel… Linux UIs are pretty much a knock of windows and it pisses me off. I know you can change all of that, but its not that simple (i got about 80% of the way to making the UI in Ubuntu to look like a mac). And getting my trackpad and fans to work right was another headache… Ill get it eventually though, its only a matter of time before viruses and the like start showing up on Mac and I would like a back up plan.

And with cloud computing, I really do hope that they take a look at some of the social networking apps and see that the trend is to integrate them all to each other. Granted I am not really looking forward total cloud computing, I would hope that changing “operating systems” doesn’t require much more work than it does now… Back Up Data (transfer data) and install (open a new account).

    3. this class has made me notice that I am not very technologically savy. I need to work on this before I start applying for jobs, I guess.

    4. Open source software seems like a great idea right now. With the economy the way it is, people will try and save money wherever possible, and I’m sure that computer software isn’t high on there “MUST HAVE” list. Open source software is basically using a ‘foot in the door’ technique. Once you have it you’ll most likely want the upgrades, or run into a problem where you’ll need support. (Both of which you have to pay for). Very neat idea! Touché open source software companies.

The second article really did bring up a valid point about how open source software has become a viable solution to other softwares (Google apparently using it) however I’m not sure I’m still entirely sold on the cloud aspect. The description of how information goes from one source to another is a little concerning. Precautions on what information is shared should be considered before posting info (financial stuff, etc). I’d use it more if there was more regulations and standards.

    6. I personally like open source software, and use a few myself. I’d rather sacrifice the quality of pricey software and use the economical open software. As college student, it is not easy to pay for expensive software.

    7. The great thing about open source is that there are thousands of programmers that look for bugs and attempt to fix. This means quicker fixes and quicker expansion. I try to use open source software when I can because i’m a broke college student, and because it shows people will utilize their projects. The more people who use their project the more it spreads and the more people it draws and more programmers to quickly fix/expand their product.

    8. I agree with most people in that using open software is often better than buying the expensive but better quality softwares, however there are some software such as Microsoft office that are too useful for someone not to buy…
