Movers & Changers
Posted on September 11th, 2009 16 commentsOne of the students in my Entrepreneurship Learning Community class suggested that MTV was running a contest named Movers & Changers that would interest fellow students. $25,000 is on the line and you still have a month to jump in. Below are some of the details quoted from here: A 30 sec UT is embedded at bottom. Hank
“mtvU has opened a new social entrepreneurship (or social innovation) contest targeting college aged students. Some of the finalist will be featured on a new show on mtvU called “Movers and Changers”. Grand prize is $25,000 for the winning venture and a chance to ring the opening bell at the NYSE. Three finalist will fly to NY and present to leading social entrepreneurs including Blake Mycoskie, Chief Shoe Giver of TOMS SHOES.From their press release:
“Movers & Changers” calls on 16-28 year old college students, individually or in teams of up to three people, to develop and produce a compelling business proposal to revolutionize the future of the world’s social market. Ideas must be creative, original, and scalable to large corporations, in addition to illustrating determination and persistent optimism. Students can submit entries online at http://www.moversandchangers.com and are encouraged to submit a video “elevator pitch” application beginning at noon on August 17, 2009 through midnight on October 16, 2009.
The competition will culminate at NYSE Euronext’s Global Entrepreneurship Week: Mentoring Madness, where students from around the world will gather with business leaders and hear leading entrepreneurs talk frankly about how young people can create their own futures. The top three “Movers & Changers” teams or individuals will fly to New York City for “Mentoring Madness,” to network and connect with prominent business leaders and present their pitches to the NYSE “Movers & Changers” Board. “

If a student or group of students had a good idea and could run with it, this would be a great opportunity to go for it. The $25,000 would be a fair amount of change for winning!

It’s definitely a great opportunity. 25k is a decent sum for a college student. If somebody has an idea he/she should go for it, in fact i myself am thinking about it.

I was in love with this idea when I heard about it. Finally, a publicized opportunity for teens across America to get there ideas out there!

This shows the importance of ability of entrepreneurship is being greater recognized and appreciated by the mainstream population time to time.
But personally I think it’s just a show after all and the job for participants is just entertaining, and I think it’s a little off from a real goal of an entrepreneurship but that’s probably just me. -

I heard about this when I was watching MTVU I thought it was a cool idea especially that it showcases young adults in roles that most teenagers would consider adult, or at least a college graduate.

This wourld definitely be an awesome opportunity for students who already have something in the works. It should be mentioned to Kristeen [Mission Matchup] or to Adam [Campus Geek].

This seems awesome. It sure would be nice to win this competition as well as the Burton D. Morgan competition. It would be a lot of money for one/two business plans. Can someone say “quick bank”? lol

This is a great way for young entrepreneurs to turn their business ideas into reality. It’s great that contests like this encourage our generation to be innovative. Like Stephen said, someone could make a lot of money for their great business plan with the two business competitions.

Putting anything on MTV is a sure way to get millions of respondents, and throw a reality show in with that and you will teenagers just hooked. Its neat to see that Burton D. Morgan offers almost just as much as MTV even though they are a large Network company.

I think it is great that MTV is doing something like this that is somewhat out of their normal promotions. It is awesome that they are endorsing young americans who are doing something better for our future, and the 25 grand is a good chuck of change.

This is just like the Burton D morgan Entrepreneurship contest we just had a few days ago. I predict there will be lots of entrepreneurship competitions like this in the future too! I am pretty sure this will be very competitive.
