Local New Web Design Firm Gets Lucky
Posted on September 22nd, 2009 26 commentsMaximumedia Design is a Lafayette-based web design company started within the last couple of months by Noah Mattern. Startups usually have trouble gaining traction. On 9/1/09 Max Showalter of the Journal & Courier ran an article on the new startup, and came back just a three short weeks later (9/22/09 p. C6) with an article covering how Maximumedia landed a job to create a web site for a real estate firm that is selling the property in Chicago located next to President Obama’s home there. The site, www.5040greenwood.com, has received 100ks of hits and received PR on Time, New York Times, Bloomberg, and Inside Edition plus international press coverage. See a Google search here: and Alexa data (9/22/09 3:26pm) below.
Moral of this story for entrepreneurs – it pays to be seen [or lucky

Stories like these about lucky businesses need to be shown more often in order to attract more people into the business of entrepreneurship and starting more successful businesses.

This is crazy that a new business like this in an industry that has a good bit of competition can gain attention so quickly. Although, it may be encouraging to those entreprenuers who are looking for their big break soon, I’m sure there are many others who have been around the block for awhile and success stories like this are sure to be frustrating.

Lucky home seller, lucky PR firm, and soon to be lucky home buyer. This cycle is what entrepreneurs would love to start with – luck. I’m sure it’s a big boost of confidence too.

I wouldn’t necessarily call what happened luck. He got his name out there and someone saw it. And he had talent because so many people loved his design.

It’s funny how lucky this firm is but I checked out the site and it seemed boring to me but then again so is real estate. Everything was gray and white, I don’t know I thought it would be cooler.

Wow, talk about getting a lucky break. Most entrepreneurs need a lucky break somewhere along the line, and it appears Noah got his early.

This is amazing, its good to know that this company had a lucky break. I agree that more entrepreneurs need to know that it is possible to succeed, even with a break.

I like to see firms get luck, and hear that not all big opportunities, like this home listing, are immediately taken over by large firms. With a good break like this it will be important for the company to have a plan for when the hype of over this sale is over.

This definately needs to be shown to others who are wanting to start a business. Showing and entrepreneur other businesses that just started is very encouraging. It gives the the final push to go ahead and start their own company.

I’m interested in seeing how much the house goes for. It has an amazing floor plan! I absolutely love historic homes!

Sure looks like this guy stuck his neck out when the time was right and made it big! Like I said in my previous response, successful entrepreneurs take risks!
This house looks beautiful!

I cannot lie stories like this give many entreprenurs false hope that their business will get that “one big break”.
but i cannot be upset when people who do get big breaks take advantage of it. you know they say good things happen to good people.

This house looks really neat. What a great idea!

Although the ‘greenhouse’ is a real business, it is maybe because people are curious about the ‘Obama’ related thing. Anyway, entreprenuers don’t always have the luck.
-
It’s not just lucky for this company to gain traction, but also the right time and right place to get this lucky chance

there is no doubt that luck plays a major part in business, the trick (and the purpose of a business plan) is to see how lucky you are and maximize that luck. the media is a powerful tool but a hard on to allocate. Take advantage of any connections you may have.

This is a very inspiring story about how you can catch a break and become successful. This story shows that if you have an idea and believe in it, it doesn’t matter if all signs point to no, you can still be successful with it.

It’s refreshing to see local success stories; serves as motivation to create something cool.

Webdesign market is a very intense market, you can hire any IT major intern for a lot less and still do a fairly good job.
Although this website is a success, I don’t see any unique ability shown by the company to guarantee its success in the future from what I have seen.
To be successful in markets like this, luck is one of the essential need, but one still need to make the most out of his luck. -

I was looking at their site and the one they did for the real estate site looks like their own site with a few alterations bet it took them a day to get it up. Its great to see someone thats local succeed even if it started out by getting very lucky.

It is good to have luck, but I think it has more to do with planning and timeing.

Chris Borer September 23rd, 2009 at 14:42
I also wouldnt necessarily call this luck. This firm obviously got picked for their talents, and not just out of the blue.

i really enjoy hearing success stories about people who went out and got stuff done! Whether it was luck or not congratulations to them, it sounds like the future of this company is very bright

I notice that there are a good number of small startups that just happen to get lucky. Just the right time and the right formula. Of course, as CHris B said, they would also need good talents and solid offerings; luck is just a part of the formula
-
who said luck does not play a part in entrepreneurship.

After selling this house next to President Obama, is this startup over? Maybe they will try similarly find similar houses to sell other people. I personally am not really interested in this business. Would they be getting much money by the person who buy this? I didn’t know president obama’s private home was located at Chicago.
