Zico: Coconut Water Bubbles
Posted on September 29th, 2009 36 comments
The novelty of bottled water is starting to wear off, especially in these hard times. This presents a “problem” for companies involved in this market segment – their sales are on a downward curve dropping 6% in the 52-weeks ending July 12, 2009 to ONLY $7.6 billion. What to do about it? Invent yet another drink that everyone “must have.” And what’s the drink? Coconut water. Coconut water, different from coconut milk, comes from young green coconuts. It is a popular drink in Brazil, and is being targeted toward athletics and celebrities like Madonna who drink the stuff. How to extend the market to readers of this blog is the compelling question. Zico is leading the charge with a colorful web site extolling the virtues of sucking down its product. A video from a competitor who claims to have had the original idea is embedded below. Are you ready for aqua de coco? Hank

This is a very cool idea. I think it will go over well at first. But I feel like the hype will not last.

I’m sold. I like the pick up line too.

Not everyone in the world has access to coconut milk so this is a great way to spread it around the world and a great opportunity that Zico jumped on.

I want to try it! Sounds like an excellent idea to distribute everywhere.

All you need today is to establish a brand name that people are willing to associate themselves with and purchase. If youve conquered this step then your new ventures profits will rocket. Just like bottled water and starbucks. Are you really getting a better product or are we brainwashed into thinking its better?

Michael took what was popular in Brazil and marketed it to athletes and health-conscious consumers as a healthy alternative to sports drinks. Like they said, it’s basically the national drink down there, but he was able to pass this coconut water off as a drink that will hydrate you as well as providing vitamins and other nutrients. Is the idea of coconut water original? No, but the idea of marketing it as a health drink is. Like Ross said, this is where Michael saw an opportunity for branding.

I am not too sure! I have tried coconut milk and did not like it at all. I understand that coconut water comes from green coconuts but it seems like it would have a similar taste to me. I am not sure this is something I would try.

I think they’re already taking a step in the right direction by marketing to celebrities right now. Look at FIJI water. Why would anyone pay so much extra just to drink water out of a different bottle? Because they saw some sleek celebrity drinking it. By rumor, this is also how Uggs started. I can’t remember which model or actress was said to have been seen wearing them first, but she was actually wearing them on the beach, which seems impractical. Yet, the idea still spread around the country. Other than that, they need to develop a brand that will really focus on how coconut water is good for the health. Take smartwater for example. People buy that because the label itself makes them feel smarter when drinking it. These are just my two cents.

This actually sounds pretty good! Its amazing what different drinks other people come up with. I’d just like to try it. whats the hurt in trying new things right? Hopefully it doesnt taste bad.

This is a very creative way to get the attention of consumers. I have to agree with Amber, however, people see their “idols” and celebrity icons doing something and they think it must be worth trying as well.

I just like saying the work coco. Its so fun to say! FUN ADVERTISING IN THE FUTURE. Unfortunately, I hope it does not taste like coconut milk because I don’t see that as an appealing beverage. If tastes different then I’m sure I would at least give it a try.

Coconut water is a very interesting drink, but I think I would actually like it. Good idea!

It is true that its every where in Brazil, I was there 2 years ago you couldn’t walk more than 100 yards without finding a stand. It’s really good.

Yea, I never was into the whole water fad. If it wasn’t pure water, I didn’t ingest the chemicals. However, Coconut Water I may give a try. If it’s anything like Green Tea then I’m on board.

I am definitely interested in this! I love coconut and this water seems like it would taste delicious. Not to mention the added nutritional benefits and variation on plain old water.

I wanna try it if I get the chance, but doesn’t seem like something that I would spend much money on. Great business idea though, just have to find the right people to buy the product!

I had no clue that water bottles were going down in demand I thought everyone was a fan of them, but hey new inventions always help out this sounds pretty cool

Personally I don’t hate it, but it’s definitely not something on my top drink list. The concept is good, I think it will fly in the first period, but if you want to laugh all the way to the bank, you got to have something more than just coconut water
-
It’s innovative to come up with the coconut water idea. It seems that the global recession isn’t that bad.

Sounds so unique. Marketing it would be impressive.

This is a cool product that I would definitely buy at least once.

I’m very skeptical about this product, it seems as if it would not sell very well due to the special niche market. How many tiny niche markets make millions off their products. It takes too much convincing that this product is so much better than all other specialty waters.

This item for sure has much potential. I can see them being sold at places like Smoothie King or Vitamin Shoppe as some sorts of health product.

Personally I will not be jumping on the coconut water band wagon. I hate coconuts!! But I cannot knock someone for trying to make their easy billion! If I’d thought of it first, I’d do it! Ross, you can’t knock this person for trying to do exactly what we as entreprenurs all have in the back (or forefront) of our minds!
-
I think this is already exist in China but I am not sure. I don’t think it will be a real popular drink, but it’s new here, so it might have some potential.
-
I bet the people who came up with the product first are disappointed they did not go big with it.

I love how this is really about the branding and getting the name out there. It’s a sweet idea that was sparked in an interesting way.

I have tried milk from green coconut before when i was about 20 and i didnt like it. Hope they dont decide to add so much junk to it that it will be bad for you.

I think it is a great idea. I like to drink natural coconut water, but the problem is that it is only available in some tropical areas. Now,things are different because of Zico. Great Idea!

We talked about doing continued use research in advertising. This could go over like new Coke. When they did initial research people loved the new Coke but they didn’t continue to use it because they only liked it at first. The product failed miserably.

It is funny you mention this today, in my recovery I was watching the new hit show “The Doctors” and they were advertising a very similar product and discussing the advantages of getting extra potassium in this manor.

It seems really really cool! The pick-up line is even better, I would love to try this out.
Its healthy as well. -

This product kind of remind me of what I used to drink in China, because in a lot of Asian countries, people already came up with this idea. However, this information also tells me about sometimes put the same thing in another market area would have an unpredictable result.

I think comming up with these kind of innovative product depends on how well the person finds connections, and the right people to work with and selling at the right time. Also, there is so many ideas and potentials but many people around are skeptical and afraid and don’t support the idea. That is why although people have ideas with good potential, it dies so quickly. Many people would have disagreed if a begger or a poor person wanted to come up with this product. It also depends on the individual belief that he/she trusts the product, feasibility analysis and will be successful in the future.
