Toybots: A future toy
Posted on September 30th, 2009 26 comments
At the recent Tech50, a new concept in toys was introduced, Toybots. Here’s their description: Toybots ushers in an "internet of things" that will disrupt the gaming, entertainment and toy industries. We have been building the Toybots Platform for connected toys with full 3G, WiFi, GPS and accelerometer capabilities tied to online and mobile games. Imagine a physical toy you can tickle online and it giggles in the real world. Imagine a grandmother in Iowa recording a family story and the toy telling the story to her grandchild in Florida. You will be able to download audio books as well to the toys and play full online games with these toys. Toybots will bridge mobile, online and physical gaming worlds together for the first time in an inspirational and unique way. Toybots provides toy manufacturers and hobbyists a ready hardware and software platform to launch connected toys that are wirelessy connected via the Toybots Magic Network. Developers will be able to contribute the Toybots firmware as well as launch new applications and games via an App Store connected to Toybots-powered devices that are wirelessly connected via the Toybots Magic Network. Toybots technology was incubated at SGN, the leading innovator in mobile social games, and is a separate division of the company.
So we have intelligent appliances like refrigerators, and now toys. We’re still working on students.

Definitely an interesting idea. It’s cool when companies can bridge different technologies together to make one successful product.

This is a prime example of the technological and content convergence that we have been going through since the 90’s. It is a very interesting and novel concept.

toys are just not made for children anymore…

Creepy. Just plain creepy. I don’t like it.

the marketing skills of the toy industry is amazing, making something that’s meant to be toy looks interesting to us or even adults

This idea sounds like and early version of AI. I could see a movie being made of this where the toys break their controls and revolt against their owner. Also the Woozee looks Super Creepy.

Giving a physical appearance to a digital message is not something practical. It lowers response time, looks like a Kirby, and is just too gimmick-like to be of any interest to me. I’m sure kids and grandparents would love it, but as for the gaming market I do not see it making a big impact. I don’t think it will last long.

Jeez that thing was kind of creepy looking, it’s like a furby on roids. In the end I think what they will charge for the product will remove it from fadability like beanie babies or furbies. I’d rather have grandma tell me a story over skype or something like that, not through some deranged doll

Honestly, this kind of creeps me out. I was never much of a doll person, and I think this would have just scared me when I was younger. But, I guess there are a lot of kids who would like it, and, besides being creepy, it is pretty interesting.

The toys of today are becoming very complex. This may be a very good thing for the future of the world though because it is starting younger kids out with what they are going to need for life. It is like a jumpstart for them.

It is no doubt a brilliant idea, yet the toy surely looks pretty creepy. It will definitly take some time for people to get used to these toys.

Wow, this toy can do everything. Although it does worry me that parents will start to communicate with their children via a toy?! But otherwise I think this i a very neat concept!

its really cool.
i am rally amazed how people get such great n innovative ideas -

This idea seems pretty ridiculous to me.
-
Its very unique, but i don’ think that many parents will be happy buying it for their children cause this might widen the gap between them and also nobody would want his/her child to be depending upon such a thing.

Well I really like this idea. I would rather it wake me up than my cell phone, which does now. I also agree that it looks creepy but I think if they get a toy manufacture-er they can make it much better.

Wow this is crazy…its almost kind of scary that it has a gps installed and it can track where a person is. I dont know if i would want to purchase a doll that people can talk through and it knows your location. This is almost a way where the company can track where most of the products are purchased and where people travel too the most.

Very interesting concept… but not sure it is something I would like to own one…
-
I agree it’s an nice concept and it’s very cool to combine all this technology, but I just don’t know. I think it’s one of those things that you read about and just a few people will own; i don’t see it taking off just now.

I wish my teacher were a teddy bear…lol lectures wouldn’t be as boring that way…and if you could change the voice features I would listen to it over and over, but in different voice pitches. Tickle your teacher haha!!

Defiantely an interesting concerpt, but i think they might be trying to do too much with one toy. And with all that actual hard ware in the toy, it might be too pricey as a kids toy.

The concept of this business was really unique and high-tech, it combines the robots and barbies together, which made the toy even more interesting, and the customers not only for little kids but also for many adults. All in all, it was a good innovations of toys! Go toybots!

This toy bot company reminds me the movie small soldiers. Also, this toy is not that innovative because about 5 or 6 years ago at Korea, i bought a similar toy named Furby that had similar concept. Reacting, interacting and responding to people’s actions. It is scary how toys can be microchipped with very precise technology and interact with people. I know there are some very high tech chips that can be inserted to toys that can act like robots like the movie terminators which can be dangerous for humans. I personally wouldn’t buy this product. However, toy bot company showed great ideas about their technology part. Although, the toy woozy is not perfect it has good features such as GPS, changing contents they received, and sensors. But i was little dissapointed and the toy woozy looks like it needs much more improvement. The toy looks a little crappy.
