We’re trying out a new plugin-Apture
Posted on October 17th, 2009 13 comments
Today we’re trying out a plugin for the WordPress engine used to drive our blog, named Apture. Look for the small icons and hover over them for dynamic information. Here we go:
“Flying on Plant Power: By 2020, he hopes that fuel for his companies’ jet fleets will be derived from algae or consist of isobutanol, derived from sugars. The advantage of isobutanol, he said, is that unlike some other biofuels, it does not freeze at 15,000 feet and continues burning very well in the subzero temperatures as high as 35,000 feet. It has another merit, he added. “The world is awash in sugar,” he said. “Sugar is bad for you, so let’s put it in planes.””
Here’s what CrunchBase has to say: “Apture allows readers to dig deeper into a subject without ever leaving the blog post. When you click on any link marked by the icons
,
, or
, you will be able to view video, reference materials, images and other related media.”In the first two paragraphs, I have made Apture links. When you see the foregoing icons, glide your mouse pointer over them and see how they work, and comment as to their efficacy for you. Did Apture add to your “experience” on the blog? Could be “Bad to the Bone! Hank
Here’s an embedded video about Apture:

I hate those things because when i read a webpage i tend to follow along with my mouse and when i hit one of those it pops up the window over the text i was reading. The other part i dont like is i have to exit the window I would rather it disappear when i moved the mouse pointer either out of the box or off the icon, this would help me keep my place when reading the text.

Good comments. Don’t have to use Apture. Let’s see what others have to say though.

What I like about it over other mouseover techniques is that you can’t accidentally activate it; you have to consciously hover over the little picture for a short amount of time. Another feature I like is the “Table of Contents” in the upper left of the Apture window. It allows you to dig even dipper into the subject matter without leaving the page. Really cool Hank!

This is a cool plugin. It seems very user friendly and effective for the creator and the user.

The Apture pops out too unexpected, which is not that convenient, but I like the idea of Apture that provide much more information beyond the content.

I actually really liked it. It makes it easier for me to understand a topic because I won’t have to google it separately. I especially liked the youtube video, it was quick to come up and didn’t make a separate tab.

It depends on the individual, but it does annoy me sometimes. Others might absolutely love it though.

Yeah i like how there’s a delay before it actually pops up. I hate it when websites have ads embedded in the text and they pop up right when you move your mouse over them.
Love the Turbo btw.

i really liked it. it is very user friendly. Especially the option of having your video from where ever you want is interesting. It even helps your search become simpler and also effective. Its good.

That is annoying…especially when you accidentally click on it and you have to dodge the pop ups

I like how the pop ups don’t come up until u hover over it long enough I have seen similar ones but they popped up unexpectedly and were annoying this was much better…..u have everything at your finger tips -brilliant= Matt Mellenwig.

Apture looks like a convinient tool, for some people. I will be able to find, select the good information i need. However, doesn’t it provide too much information and isn’t it a little random? I am not sure how these various information can be what I am searching for. But seems to have very good efficacy in linking, flexibility, searching videos.
