    Most of us have a favorite pen or pencil, shirt or blouse, or something we just have to wear or use to take an exam. Athletics and in particular racers of all kinds have even more rituals that they just must wear, see or hear before competition. Now Michelle Roark, a top freestyle skier who is also a couple of courses away from a chemical engineering degree from the Colorado School of mines at 35 years old, is rolling out a perfume of her own making named appropriately “Confidence.”

    phi Confidence is made from a secret [isn’t everything these days a “secret”] mixture of rose oil from Bulgaria, bergamot from Italy, and grapefruit from Florida, truly an international blend. She has an early stage startup named Phi-nomenal. Her web site states:

    Seeking something that would be empowering, all natural, and perfectly balanced, Roark researched essential oils and their associated medicinal purposes. Utilizing her Chemical Engineering background, she combines the features of an all natural carrier base (that is not toxic to the body and lasts longer than commercial perfumes) with precisely the right essences to invoke confidence, focus, and energy. Balancing it all off, Roark applies her mathematical knowledge of Phi to the creation of all Phi-nomenal products (patent pending), resulting in a divinely unique, all-natural, well-balanced product line designed to empower the human spirit.

    A Success — Phi-nomenal’s Confidence Natural Perfume Oil and Custom Crystal bottle sold out within a week of being introduced at Eve Boutique in Denver, Colorado. Roark was unaware of the immediate success as she was in Torino, Italy at the time competing in the 2006 Winter Olympic Games. Roark went on to finish the World Cup Season ranked 3rd overall in the World and 1st in the US. Immediately following the end of the World Cup season Roark had the official Phi-nomenal Launching Party where she introduced the rest of the Phi-nomenal Product line.

    Back in May, Roark had the opportunity to meet the President and enjoy a formal dinner at the White House.  She also met with Senator Hillary Clinton where she was able to personally present the Senator with some Phi-nomenal Perfume … after all Phi-nomenal’s mission statement includes being the scent of the first woman President of the United States!

    So the next time you are seated next to a female [or male] student who has a unique “smell” and seems to do well on all exams, think “Confidence.” There have been too many startups based on much less insight and problem-solving than Michelle has shown.       Wow what sparked all of those sales? I would have thought that entering the perfume business would be very tough.

      Well i don’t think you need a chemical engineering degree to make perfume but apparently it helps a lot. Go ahead with your bad self girl. STACK YOUR PAPER BOO-BOO

    4. I’m really suprised that a perfume like this would take off so well. I wouldn’t think a perfume for athletes would be a very successful idea. This is prolly just because I am a biased opinion and a guy wouldn’t wear perfume anyway.

    5. I think its really great that Michelle is so passionate about her product. As we learned in class today- it is essential that you have an intense drive and belief in your product. As far as giving a woman confidence I think the perfume may help women achieve some sort of added sparkle. If a woman feels better about herself because she smells good she is bound to be more confident and thus will begin associating good things happening with wearing that perfume! That definitely cannot be bad for business.

      Very ineteresting. Athletes don’t usually use their sense of smell during competition, until now…

      I should definitely try this stuff. If it’s supposed to improve focus, it would be great to have for lectures and exams. I love how happy Michelle is to talk about her business. It really shows how much she is into it. I can see this business continuing to do well because people will always be concerned about how they smell.

    9. I’ve heard a lot about scents and colors affecting your mood, it totally makes sense that a product like this would work. It is obviously working for her!

      She recognized a gap in the marketplace. I would guess that either no one before her had targeted female athletes in particular for the fragrance market. She capitalized on this and has been very successful because of it.

    12. Well, this is modern day alchemy at work. This reminds me of the article that is in the entrepreneurship book about the ThinkGum. This is good stuff. I think I need both of these, lol. (I hope they have good masculine scents.)

    13. I wouldn’t have imagined that starting a perfume line could be this simple. It seems that she has made a niche for herself. I wouldn’t mind knowing if her sales remained high or if they have dropped over the past three years.

    14. I think this kind of product will definitely sell well among students, because they need confidence, focus, and energy and like to smell good at the same time.Roark is a good idea-generator.

    15. Although invoking more sensory information can theoretically help, I find it difficult to believe that it can actually work. Sales have been impressive, therefore people must believe this product can help, but it would be interesting to see how much of an effect it has if a scientific study on this product is performed.

    16. who would have thought that an olympic skier would be so into perfume! Of course a woman loves being told she smells good and the best thing in the world is finding your own signature scent. This makes me want to go in the lab and create my own bottle! –I am honestly dying to know what it smells like. You got my attention Michelle!

    18. I still can’t believe of the combination of perfume and olympics. I understands celebrities and their scent but not athletes. Interesting concept nonetheless.

    19. Perfurme has always been a favorite choice of many women around the world, but now it is becoming even more than just a fragrance. This new idea seems great!

    20. I never knew that a perfume could bring out different attitudes and different feelings! It’s a one of the many unique concepts that fascinates and interests people. So, it’s very obvious that’s it’s going to boost it’s sales also.

    21. It’s great to relate product with human emotions. The “”Confidence” does have a resonance for people who want to be confident.

    22. One would think that the perfume market is already pretty saturated and there are strong barriers to entry; but selling out within one week proves otherwise.

      It’s interesting that she used mostly two scents, it seems that nowadays all the perfumes have like 10 scents all mixed to come up with some crazy new smell

    26. Michelle is very wise in that she knows how women always want the new “it” thing and she definitely provided that in this new, unique perfume. I am definitely intrigued by it and would love to sample it. I think that if she continues to market her product the way she has been, her success will continue.

      Simple is better, but optimism can only get you so far in a market where ‘new’ quickly fades. She better get while the gettin’ is good.

      I guess this would at first glance seem a little hokey to me. A perfume that makes you feel more confident? Isn’t that what a lot of perfumes say, though sometimes replacing confident with sexy. I think it is all based on how consumers feel about the smell, not the “effects”. Similarly, I bought the ThinkGum that was said to boost concentration and focus in the classroom. I was so excited to try it out and test my focus, but when I actually chewed some, it was nasty tasting.
      I guess Roark was able to find a good mixture of scents, because I believe her sales were based on that and not her promotion.

    31. I would love to try this out!! Such a creative and insightful idea! Even better if it works! Don;t know how well it would stay on at swim competitions though…? Guess I would have to put it on before my swims or something.

    32. This seems like a cool idea, and they can really market it well. It reminds me of Smartwater. Although it’s mainly just water, people buy it because they subconsciously think it is either making them smarter or they are making a smart decision by buying it. This perfume will subconsciously make consumers feel like they are building confidence.

    33. Its all in peoples heads. If they think that a certain something is going to help them with luck then they will buy it. By having someone famous endorse it lets the profits rise.

    34. I too can’t believe the combination of perfume and Olympics. I feel its just a way to achieve self confidence which can be in turn helpful in the real game.
      If you got brains its even possible to sell a hairbrush to a bald person.

    35. secret is the operative clause to things the FDA won’t find out about, I jest and digress; I see a market, but don’t think many people will be smelling her as she flies down the slope. If the way you smell is your lucky charm, go for it

    36. People will believe anything. If they think a perfume will make them more confident then so be it.

      It’s interesting that she went on a mental appeal rather than an emotional appeal most perfumes take. I’m not sure I would want to bring up the topic of perfume with her, but good for her for following her ambitions.

    38. This is definitely an example of taking an idea to the next level in terms of creativity and originality. It’s hard to believe this is a success, but I guess you can’t judge too quickly.

    39. Michelle Roark really made a hit! making purfumes with various ingriedients that is considered secret and which is hard to find these days. I am surprised the perfumes she sold, sold out immediately. Also, when she had an opportunity to meet the president as an entrepreneur! I really wish i can smell this perfume and see why its so significant.

    40. It will definitely be a unique innovation, because adding sensory assistance to help people will be a totally new idea in any fields. For instance, mix the tech with menu in the restaurant.
