Second Mid Term Presentation + Windows 7 install sucks!
Posted on October 25th, 2009 23 comments
Building on yesterday’s blog, today’s blog highlights Team 7′s subject, appropriately named “DorkCorp,” whose tagline is “Fixing Your Computers..Because, We Can’t Get Dates.” The company, as you will see in the video below, was started by and is managed by Purdue Dorks, aka, engineers. They also have an interesting line of logo-ed clothing which has already captured the eye of some of my female students. They have made some obvious oversights – a 219 area code phone number [probably a cell phone of convenience], and a Hotmail contact email. Since they apparently own the domain Dork-Corp.com, you would think “Dorks” would be capable of setting up their own email account?????
But first, the continuing Windoes 7 installation saga. I tried again, and this time ran Microsoft’s Checker as suggested. It indicated it didn’t like two ATi video drivers, a label program, and a network resource driver needed updating, and the update was available. I deleted the ATi program called Catalyst from the hard drive itself, removed the label program since I wasn’t using it anyway, did a Google for the updated driver and then installed it. About two hours later Windows 7 had successfully installed itself BUT then downloaded 15 software patches. After they were installed, I manually ran a Update Check and was handed 15 more. The third try yielded one additional update. BUT it wasn’t a clean install. I bought a brand new HP J6430C printer at Sam’s Friday – guess what, no Windows 7 drivers are available for it and the best I could ascertain “maybe November [I hope 2009]. So boys and girls, life is not as The Evil Empire would have us believe. My nephew Craig also ran into “challenges” upgrading Vista to Windows 7. Buyer beware! Hank

The windows 7 update took me forever. The installation adviser recommended for me to remove some programs, but I ignored that and after about 10 hours installation was complete.
Also, it’s interesting to see how aggressively mac is advertising against PC. The released three new mac vs pc ads the day window 7 was released.

Good thing I have a mac. Windows 7 sounds like a pain in the butt.

I was thinking about downloading the Windows 7, but never got around to doing it. I’m actually very glad that I didn’t.

Again I’m never going to use window’s 7 or vista, and this was an amazing presentation, that group probably deserves an A.

And they will “probably” receive one.

I hate it when there is huge hype over something coming out and it fails miserably.

I have to give Adam credit – he’s sold a couple DorkCorp thongs! I have seen some shirts/bags around Purdue – great marketing!
The 219 number is indeed Adam’s cell. He would walk out of class to help out a Chicago client I bet. He also works at ITap and DLC, so he’s not always at his apartment or a “main line.”
He was also co-owner of The Venue in downtown Lafayette Aug. 07-May 08.

We (DorkCorp) find ourselves in current transitioning period in that we are migrating to a centralized phone number available to all employees as well various server migrations, not limited to but including our Exchange email servers.
Given the responsibilities of academia, this process is rough to say the least. While I hear your criticism loud and clear, I can assure you it isn’t going overlooked within the organization.
Also, we’ve had Windows 7 Ultimate for months now. We’ve installed on everything from 10 year old laptops to brand new iMac’s without a hitch. The driver issues we are seeing are in regards to the Sony Vaio line that makes use of fingerprint scanners. While Apple isn’t officially supporting Seven until about November, installations are still occurring and impressively doing them without the Windows BootCamp installation – in that Seven is figuring out all the drivers by itself without Apple support.
I’d love to sit down and talk tech sometime if you’re free.

Though I’m an avid Mac user, I use Windows 7 at work and it’s pretty cool. I’ll probably be dual-booting my MacBook with it and Snow Leopard

iLike my mac! iLove my mac!

Regarding Adam’s comments, I too have been running Ultimate for almost a year. However, it was a clean install, as were I bet all the others cited in the comments.
In particular, I’m bitching about the Vista upgrade route, and I am not alone by a long shot. BTW, on your clothing page captured above, last line should read “…touch with you shortly” not “…touch with your shortly”
You’re doing a great job and I take my hat off to you for “doing it!

I think Windows 7 sounds like a good program. Its campaign is a different story. I also love the video on DorkCorp

The only of DorkCorp seems so on top of his shtuff! He really believes in what he does and with that type of ambition he is sure to go far. Gives me a little kick in the rear to start thinking a little more ahead. Love Erica Lied in this VIDEO!!!!!

I can’t see how windows 7 isn’t a success, our own boiler copy shop has been sold out of the 64 bit for days. As for upgrading, I was successful updating from xp to 7 in no more than 30 min. The only problem I ran into was the one that Adam mentioned with the biometric fingerprint scanner.

I’ll be making the conversion to windows 7, but I always expect things like that to take forever (I’m not too computer savvy).

I love that something as simple as an operating system can raise such great heated debate. I am not a Mac user and i hate Vista. I assume i’ll hate Windows 7 as well. In the Diffusion of Innovations model you could consider me a laggard when it comes to upgrading my os. Windows should release a version that is completely free of stupid gimmicks and try to just get what its made for right.

Now that confirmed my intention of buying a Mac.

Dont have a chance to play around with win 7 much yet, have a RC copy but haven’t pick up the retail version since they’re sold out at itap like first thing in the morning. But I really liked win 7 RC, so expect great thing. I use both Mac and Windows, they’re good at respective aspect.

The company Dork Corp name sounds very funny. So all Purdue students are the audiences. So not all cases of the windows 7 is successful in instaling? we should be aware before we buy them.
