We tend to think of and consider smart phones like the iPhone to be U.S.-related. Such is not the case by a long shot. Today’s blog is about a couple of iPhone Apps that really reach out to lands afar.

The first is TVU. TVU was founded in October 2005 by Paul Shen, a serial entreprneur, and is headquarted in Mountain View, California. Communication Technology in a 10/8/09 article stated:

TVU’s PC-based TVUPlayer had been downloaded by over 50 million viewers in 220 countries. Now, the same channels are available on the iPhone over WiFi connections. TVU’s 400 live TV channels from around the world include Deutsche Welle and Telemundo, as well as international sports such as cricket and alternative niche programming. The one million downloads include TVULite, which has been available on the iPhone since February as a free application, and TVUPlayer, a paid app available for $4.99 as a one-time download fee. Upon its release in August 2009, TVUPlayer for the iPhone immediately took place amongst the top 100 iPhone entertainment applications in the iTunes store and holds a 31st ranking today.

“To be ranked 31st in the top iPhone entertainment apps – considering there are 93,000 apps available from 125,000 registered developers being sold in the iTunes App Store today – demonstrates the tremendous value users see in TVU,” said Paul Shen, TVU CEO”"

Tinet1he second app worthy of consideration, this one costs 99 cents, is the CIA’s World Factbook modified for the iPhone. The app provides a host of information about just about every country in the world, from maps to people to politics etc. There are also many apps, most of them paid, that provided assistance either in learning a language or translation. I’ve included one such app in the embedded video below. Last is an app that inetbrings a host of web-based resources that are formatted for the iPhone. The one I really really like is the News Category which does a great job in assembling all the news that’s news in one assessable iPhone window. I’m running the free version; there is a $0.99 version that supports customization.

My apologies to the non-iphone equipped readers of this blog. The smart phone train is coming! Hank

    1. All sound like really cool apps. We may present some of these at the Purdue Mac Users Group.

    2. This is an awesome app. The things you can do with an iphone never ceases to amaze me.

    3. Well, the Palm Pre is cool too…:)

    4. Zacheriah Ruggles

The iphone is becoming extremely useful and adverse. It seems like there are so many things that you can do with the iphone, that you don’t even need a computer hardly.

I use my iphone for everything. I never thought the AT&T people were telling me the truth when they claimed how useful my phone would become. It’s great and I am really happy with my purchase. The applications that are available are the complete opposite of far and few and here is another to add to the long list of them!

I need to get me an iPhone. My phone has absolutely 0 applications.

    9. Wow that all sounds really cool, I wish I had an iPhone.

    10. okay…so what are windows and Nokia doing…? It seams like the I phone is tooo far ahead to be caught….

    11. Just another couple of reasons to get an iPhone.

    12. the idea of everything smart should be related to the US is a very false fallacy. It is very important to be constantly following world’s current affair, and being in the US for only three months has shown me there are plenty of people that are not doing so. Apps like this should be promoted everywhere

    14. Apple is definitely an awesome company, Macs and iphones are the perfect combination of fashion and practice. Iphones’ apps are outstanding.

    15. The apps for the iPhone do everything. I use mine for entertainment, phone calls, emails, and even to keep track of my finances. I’m interested to see how the Motorola Droid compares to the iPhone though.

    16. When is Verizon going to get an iPhone? I would love to have one! The applications just keep getting better and better :)

    17. This makes me want to have an iPhone even more. Yet, my funds dont allow it. Curse you Apple!

    18. the i phone is becoming a computer more and more after each new app is made. This was a great new piece of technology that solves many problems.

    19. There are just so many interesting apps to choose from.

    20. Emily Wetterich

That World Factbook would have been extremely useful for my government class senior year. I really need to upgrade my phone.

    21. The apps are almost overwhelming it seems. They’re definitely a huge supply with plenty of competition.

    22. I want to make the shout out for Windows Mobile Phones!!!
Ok shout out done. It is impressive the many apps that the iPhone has. iphone might as well not even include a music player because of all of its apps. I will say this. Many of my friends who have iPhones say that in reality they barely use their apps. While some of these apps a really cool like this factbook when am i going to have to randomly tell you the population of Bolivia?

    23. It is amazing the things that these apps can do, and the quantity of apps that are consistently being created. They are extremely beneficial in just about all areas from entertainment to business.

    24. I love it when you post about new iphone apps because I always seem to end up downloading them. Ever think about becoming an apple advertiser?

    25. I have put quite a few apps and games on my iPod Touch. My iPod has been worth every penny so far. I’m just wondering how the 3G speeds affect the streaming applications like the TVU app? I’ve heard many complaints about slow streaming speeds on 3G in areas. Has this been an issue with your iPhone?

    26. Nice applications. Though I still prefer Symbian operatating systems which can also allow me to watch TV and music online:) Nowadays cellphones really can just do everything.

    27. Andrew Rodriguez

The apps that apple comes out with are amazing!

Almost as much as Hank’s love for Apple

    28. Christopher Perry

Those look nice but i am looking at an Android based phone for my next phone and I am looking forward to seeing what cool apps get offered for it.

    29. I think technology is taking a new turn in which the big tech companies just create robust platforms and let individual third party developers make use of those plat forms …the iphone is great not because apple made a really good device, but because of the apps that other small companies and individuals made… so what’s next….as OS for computers that allows third parties to make applications?

    30. Sree Harsha Uddandam

This is a cool app Hank.”tu lite. ” it is very interesting to watch the online indian news. Seems that India is developing in the field of Enrepreneurship.rite hank?

    31. Shawn Tomlinson

I don’t have an iPhone but they are literally coming out with new applications every day. This means that they will never get old and won’t fall prey to the DIM Model. Apple has really figured something out.

    32. I knew i phone apps were developing greatly in the market. Wow!! 93000 apps of iphone,,, this is so amazing. I was surprised with this app the TVU that we can see news, TV around the world from our phone. It is certainly a useful app.

    33. it’s good to know that there is actually a app for tv stations for Iphone, so people can just watch the TV at any time under any circumstances. Although I don’t have a iphone, but I would like to check it out on my touch

    34. hmmm… looks interesting, very interesting

    35. Wow, Apps like this make me really want to get a iphone. TVU would probably get me way too distracted though. The CIA factbook seems like a really cool app if you are bored.
