    11/3/09 Rhymes With Orange

Believe it or not, I sometimes glance through toy fliers and catalogs that come with our newspaper to get an idea of the direction kids are taking the toy industry. After all, the kids of today are the entrepreneurs and business leaders of tomorrow. How they play today directly impacts how they will view the world tomorrow. Last Sunday’s ads were full of electronic-based stuff, from toys to actual products such as iPods and Netbooks.

meijerTucked away in a Meijer ad was depicted no less than a Ferrari Pedal Go Kart for $2,499.99. Now when I was a kid, we nailed old roller skate parts on to scrap two by fours and had a great time. [No matter how well we fastened the skates on, they were always ripped off by cracks in the sidewalks!] Then we moved up to the Soap Box Derby, and thence to real wheels. But I digress. So about the BF-7.

The BF-7 combines Ferrari-like parts and capability to the lowly pedal cart. Ad copy states: It comes loaded with 7 gears, 12-inch lightweight metal wheel rims, with ultra flat super slick X-treme tires and double disc-brakes…. Your top speed and lap times can be closely monitored using the digital dashboard computer. Additional to the unrivaled performances the soft-grip leather-look steering wheel and soft sport seat ensure unprecedented racing comfort.” Sweet! Now that’s what I’m talkin’ about, and how a few kids of today roll. What will their tomorrows hold? Hank

    1. at first i thought it was motorized, but it’s obvious that for $2500 you’re simply paying for the brand.

    2. This is a Ferrari without an engine? I can’t believe they would think this is a good idea. $2500 is way too expensive for this type of toy. You could buy a motorized go cart for that amount of money.

    3. For the money, it is definitely not worth it. It’s a very cool an interesting idea, especially for children. But that price will keep many potential buyers away.

    4. That’s pretty cool albeit a bit expensive. I love how it has the dashboard computer thing.

    5. I think that is way too expensive for a toy that your child will either grow out of or get tired of within a year or two. Parents should be saving that money for an actual car instead of blowing it on something like this.

    6. I agree with all the above comments and would like to voice a similar opinion that it’s a pretty cool toy but is a li’l too expensive. My li’l brother (7 years of age) would love to have such a cool toy and some very similar ones already! ;)

    7. This is a good marketing buzz tactic. I haven’t heard or read much about Ferrari news lately.

    8. I wish I could have had one of these when I was little. I think that for the price though it should come with the sweet racing outfit the kid in the picture is wearing. This does seem like something that you would only buy because you can afford it.

Maybe if you’re an only child and this is the only present you get for christmas and your birthday combined. This is ridiculous. I want to know who would actually buy this.

    10. I can’t believe that there is a $2500 pedal go kart. Sure it’s got the Ferrari name and “Ferrari-like” parts, but it’s still pedal-powered. If I’m dropping $2500 on something like this, it better have an engine and be able to go faster than 30 MPH. You can get a nice go-kart (with an engine) for this price.

    11. The toy is really too expansive. I’m not sure whether they can find the marketplace they want.

    12. I agree that this toy is so expensive. There’s no need for people to come after this, I believe there’s someting familiar people can get without costing so much money.

    13. This toy is great, thus expensive. I’d love to see an adult riding that thing around, that would be a picture.

    14. This toy is a little pricey for essentially a grownup tricycle. Personally I would rather ride around in a go kart that actually for $20 bucks and that exceeds 4mph as a top speed.

    15. Andrew Rodriguez

I want one! That would be so cool to have

    16. This toy only appeals to the people on the upper classes that can afford something like this, but besides the money issue, it is a good item.

    17. I also don’t see the future of this product, but this blog does remind me of the importance of seizing the interests of the new generations.

    18. It seems like a waste, but I’m always surprised by what a companies name and reputation can do for its products.

    19. Allison Weilbaker

I’m am only going to give my kids a swing set and a sandbox. ha okay but seriously this is super expensive and I don’t see it working out too well especially in this economy. With the ferrai name it really plays up to the rich crowd.

    20. Christopher Perry

My last 2 cars didnt cost that much added together.

    21. I am guessing this is meant for upper class families …in which case is a great toy…….but if it is meant for regular folks then it’s a big mistake……btw looking far ahead, I think the toy industry is slowly merging with the video game industry (guitar hero, wii, rock band u get the idea)….very soon we will be seeing actual cock pits that simulate flight…

    22. Quentin Campbell

That’s nice. Its really out of my price range though. I believe its because the brand is Ferrari that it cost your soul to pay for it.

    23. Oh my gosh, I hope I don’t ever have to buy kids this stuff. I have happy with my Barbie Jeep.

    24. This really reminds me of the FAO Schwarz cars. When I was little I always wanted an insanely expensive motorized red corvette. Honestly though, it was almost the same price as one year of college. For such toys to be so expensive I think there may be other better ways people can spend their money.

    25. What happen to big wheels. I think this is the one of the dumbest things that i have ever seen. Its great for Ferrari and if they can find people dumb enough to buy then thats great revenue. It cant cost them more than a couple hundred to make this.

    26. Sree Harsha Uddandam

I personally would not afford to pay 2500 $ for this toy. I think Ferrari also knows the fact that it would not be a successful model in the market.

    27. Marisa Nakajima

Man I wish these were cheeper, so that I could have had one as a child lol. This is why kids can’t wait to drive when they turn 16. It’s such a thrill or privlidge to be able to drive…

    28. Shawn Tomlinson

Kids have it soo easy these days. I remember the good ole’ ninties. You would have never seen such nonsense then. I contend that the big wheel is a million times better than that ferrari and im pretty sure they max out in price at about 3 dollars. The big wheel always was and always will be the best method of transportation.

    29. This is definitely cool toy, but i don’t think i want one. Who would be willing to spend 2500 on a go cart that is so slow? it is just made from Ferarri and made with good tires and its just made better with good quality materials compared to just regular toy go cart. I would rather buy a cycling bicycle instead.

    30. This is a great change of Ferarri, but it wont be a realistic business idea, because people normally won’t spent 2500 on a slow go cart. I think the company should consider the marketing area more before they actually producing this kind of product.

    31. It looks nice and new but not very practical because I don’t think is fairly priced and many parents will buy something like this for their parents. It does not have a big market for sure but still the rich kids can drive a ferrari in their childhood.

    32. Even though I love cars, 2500 for a child’s toy is ridiculous. Like a child needs high performance tires on a toy hahaha.
