  • Microsoft’s Project Natal: It’s Magic

Posted on November 10th, 2009 admin 55 comments

Arthur C. Clarke’s famous statement“Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.” certainly applies to Microsoft’s Project Natal presented last Thursday by  Team 10 in my 9am ENTR200 class as a cool new thing. If indeed it comes to pass with even a fraction of what the video shown below provides, I’m going to have to purchase another X-box [yes, I've been through a couple, and a Wii too] and try it out. I exchanged Facebook Walls with a Microsoft employee who is a recent MBA grad from Krannert and he couldn’t tell me any more that what’s publicly available, a video of which is embedded below. He did confirm that Project Natal is REAL.

BTW, Clarke is also attributed as having said  “The only way of finding the limits of the possible is by going beyond them into the impossible.” And that boys and girls, is what being a true entrepreneur is all about. Hank

Very cool and advanced! This seems like it would be a hot item!

    2. This looks awesome. I just hope it can do all the things that it is showing that it can do. I hate when they hype things up alot and they don’t meet all the expectations.

    3. I agree that even if the actual product delivers a fraction of what’s featured in the video, it will still be a huge success and will change the way we play video games.

    4. Christopher Perry

Anyone know when they expect to have Natal up and running? If it does half of what they show in the video I might switch to playing console games.

    5. It sounds like a very cool system, but Americans in general are lazy and therefore I don’t know how sucessful this system would be. Additionally, it seems like the technology needed for this could get expensive.

    6. This seems like it will be awesome. I just hope they dont over do it and make it difficult to use.

    7. I’m so excited! I hope its at least close to what they’re showing here!

    8. Andrew Rodriguez

That is really cool. It reminds me of the IPhone, except in a video console form, but still is able to complete all the functions of a typical console and many computer functions as well.

    9. I agree that this is something unbelievable but Wii was also not possible a decade ago. Its not that hard for me to believe that this is a real project at microsoft. Only time can tell, but this thing is amazing.

    10. I’m ver amazed by this idea. It’s gonna be a very successful product in the market as it allows people of all ages be able to get entertained while they stay active. It’s like actual playing of outdoor games in the inside of your house. Alot of parents have been complaining about problems such as obesity, passivity that their children are suffering from due to their gaming habits sitting at home. So, I think this is avery good solution to that. It’ll also keep the whole family spend a lot of time together. I’m sure to tell my Dad about this and ask him to buy it someday. :)
Also, I truly appreciate Clarke’s words when he says- “The only way of finding the limits of the possible is by going beyond them into the impossible.”

    11. I loved seeing this in class, I immediately sent this link out to my family and friends. I know when I get it I wont be spending much time other than with this game. Too bad it can’t be here sooner.

    12. This looks really cool. This is going to be huge when it comes out I’m sure it will sell out fast. It will be interesting to see how well it works.

    13. This is awesome. A whole new reason for people to never leave their homes! Just kidding, I really hope this works as well and as easy as they make it look.

    14. I feel that using “Project Natal” Microsoft distance itself from its main game console competitors in Nintendo and Sony. I think that this product has a big enough of a wow factor to sell a lot of units if they can sell this product at a decent price. Also, I’ll try and answer some questions from earlier posts. No release date has been mentioned by Microsoft but they look to release the product in late 2010. Project Natal was announced at the E3 gaming convention this summer and was accompanied with three demo games.

    15. Project Natal appears to be an incredible advancement in video game technology. Wii started the whole motion control idea and it seems like their idea will guide the future of video games. The Project seems to be aiming to take a part of Nintendo’s casual gaming crowd by offering fun, interactive games without all of the button mashing. Like someone said above, if it delivers, it will be a huge success. While I’ve owned an Xbox 360, PS3, and Wii, I sold my Xbox 360 to get my Wii because the games and services offered by Microsoft at the time were subpar compared to the PS3. Nonetheless, this looks to be a great step forward for Microsoft and the video game industry in general. Gamers continue to seek a new level of interaction and realism and Natal appears to be headed in that direction.

    16. WOW! If this comes out, and is working, I will sell my soul for project natal! It looks beyond amazing! I honestly cant beleive technology is so advanced. Remeber the days of pong? lol I am anticipating the premier of project Natal, and will stand outside of Best Buy all night, the day before it comes out. (Or welcome myself to the 21st century and order one online)! lol

    17. This is so awesome! Incredible to see how far technology has come! I am definitely looking forward to trying this out!

    18. This is amazing! Technology advances so quickly. First there was the eye toy with the idea of controller-free game playing, then wii, and now project natal! I think this product will be a big hit. I am looking forward to its release.

This is seriously the coolest thing I have ever seen! I can’t wait until they have it out for sale.

    21. This looks really cool. Definitely the follow-up to wii. However, I think users like having something to hold in their hands (maybe it’s just me because my hands are shaky sometimes). Another complaint I had is that people like Hank have bought multiple versions to the XBox and once they buy the new version, it makes the old one worthless unless it’s worth something to someone on eBay or at a garage sale. With the exception of cell phones (because they are a need in today’s society and it is worth buying a completely new version to some), products like this annoy me because they are unable to adapt to future changes and upgrades. It really seems wasteful to me.

    22. THIS IS NUTS!!!!!! I like how it is interactive and does not just makes kids sit on their behinds!

    23. Sree Harsha Uddandam

Sometimes I feel that how did Human invent all the modern technologies. This video is really amazing and may be there is nothing impossible in this world. I think this can become a real project but it will take some time. But amazing stuff.

    24. Sree Harsha Uddandam

I still wonder how people get such ideas and successfully implement them. I mean just imagine there is nothing existent in the world and we are here in this world where we can fly. Unimaginable stuff 200 years ago.
      wireless
      bluetooth
everything , everything is so innovative.!!!

    25. This was our topic for our speech. I would personally love to get this when it comes out. This will be the most innovative thing ever done for a video game system. If all the things offered in the video are true Xbox will own its industry.

    26. I didn’t hear about this until the group presentation. Definitely way cool!

    27. Thats some cool technology.

    28. That’s amazing, especially it has so many functions.

    29. When they showed this in class i was very skeptical but i am happy to hear that it was confirmed as real. I can only imagine the work that has been put in on this project and the secrecy that it has been under since its inception.

    30. Thought the project is confirm real, I just dont know if I see this function flawlessly in near future as in next month or next season. now I sure hope it works as intended cause it sure sounds cool!

    31. I heard of it at my com class a year ago, it sounds pretty cool.
Wondering how much the radiation is the “radar” thing going to have.

    32. This thing looks cool. It’s like wii x100. I feel wary about how some of the stuff’s gonna work though. Sometimes, it just feels better to actually be holding onto something giving commands…like wii’s remote made games use funky motion controls when sometimes it’s just so much easier and better just to use a joystick. Still, with full body motion capture and all, I don’t know how this would work

    33. Wayyyyy cool. I want. The creator of that is about to make a lot of money. It’s an awesome idea. Not only is the technology insane, it gets gamers moving. The first thing I think of when I hear the words “video game” is a lazy boy sitting in front of the T.V. totally consumed in the game for HOURS on end. This redefines the videdo game. So not only are you having fun playing a game, your getting a work out too. This has been my favorite blog video thus far.

    34. p.s.// (no offence to anyone who plays video games!!!)

    35. They just announced the release date the the cost is going to be around 50 dollars. I suddenly have more incentive to buy an xbox 360. (plus it works with my zunehd!)

    36. looks like microsoft just put the eye toy and the wii together and are probably gonna bring EA on board the natal ship then come up with some “xbox exlusive” games

    37. It will be the future toy!!

    38. This is a great idea in theory. I work for a video game company and one of the advantages to video games especially sports games is that you can be good with no athletic ability. If video games become as interactive as this suggests then you would have to be physically good at the game to be good in the virtual game.

    39. Quentin Campbell

This is a great concept to compete with the Nintendo Wii. The fact that now you can play xbox and add a physical element to it should make the council more 4d. The technology that went into the sensor on the top of the tv must be pretty new and revelutionary

    40. This is unbelievable! Technology is constantly an consistanly advanceing in amazing ways. The interation is great, and this is definitely one of the next big things that will go do extremely well if it goes alright.

    41. As interesting and innovative as this seems, I don’t think it will be all that successful.

    42. This is such a cool idea and will sell if it is put out there and made
but when is that going to happen?

    43. This looks awesome. They already have some technology like this, but if it could recognize you and be that aware of your actions that would be amazing!! It seems that the initial setup would be time consuming, but after that this idea seems very plausible.

    44. This would put the Wii to shame with the easy moving gameplay without a controller…this seems impossible to do. i wonder what type of glitches this thing will have.

    45. I am totally willing to spend all my day playing this. This looks fantasy. It will be a big challenge and development for this kind of technology. But sure it’s possible. And I think this might be very expensive. I hope I can buy it in the future.

    46. Well, video games has to develop some time. I think microsoft has done fabulous job in starting this product for future develop of simulation of video games. Hovever, the current development still shows we need a far more way to go..dinosaur moving game, virtual skateboarding on the house? I am not really surprised with this at all. There was eye toy already from ps2 and i predicted this product will comeout 5 years ago into just better quality game. I hope this kind of virtual game becomes more realistic.

    47. I don’t really play video games, in fact I sold my xbox and my wii because I never used them, and I don’t have any games installed on my PC. However, I would be very willing to get one of these, it looks amazing!

    48. This is something that I would definitely buy when it comes out. It looks very cool and I am interested to see how fast it sells out especially if it comes out around the holidays. I am surprised I have not seen any commercials or any marketing at all on this.

    49. It is good to hear from Hank that his prior student said that it is confirmed that this will be coming out.

    50. Very cool idea and i think this will be a very hot item in the future , I cant wait to get my hands on one

    51. These is amazing, i actually have this now-a-days, this technology does everything, you can even talk to it and it responds back to you.
