iPhone’s OWLE: New Tricks
Posted on November 17th, 2009 45 comments

Not too long ago the OWLE/bubo I ordered came neatly packaged and numbered. Seems I have # 159 of 500 – interesting touch. It works exactly, to use a favorite word of readers of this blog, as advertised. I slipped my iPhone into the provided rubber case, this combination into the recess in the back of the bubo, plugged in the provided external microphone, and shot the video below. IMHO well worth the $100 bucks. It’s heavy, but is to be replaced by a lighter/cheaper model shortly, probably when #500 is sold
What’s not to like. See the iPhone/bubo video below. This week in ENTR200 we are studying Intellectual Property (IP). Seems that the OWLE guys are good examples of what can happen to young entrepreneurs. See the email below: Hank
Hey Henry,
That is great, is you have any questions of us that will help you with you class me know. Something funny to mention perhaps http://www.isteadyshot.com/isteadyshot.com/iSteady.html is a company that makes a product in the same family as the OWLE. The reason why this is so funny is because they copied our entire strategy, from website to contests. We are flattered and I’m sure as a prof you could draw some interesting conclusions for that.
Sincerely,
Graham R. McBain

the actually houseing is a great idea but seems like it is to big for people to want to hassle with. I think if they could figure out a way to have just the lens and mic it would be a far better product and less expensive.
-
looks pretty cool, good quality as well.

I just don’t know if I would get much use out of it. I feel like just buying a camera would be more worth it and less of a hassle. But I think it is a cool idea.

The quality is very good, but I would probably pay an extra hundred dollars and just get a real video camera as it is lighter and probably a little better. What video format does the iphone save to?

I am impressed by the quality of the video, its really amazing….
But as it was said, I could rather put some more money and but a video cam. There are two main reasons to do this , one being the OWLE is not as handy and the other being its rather used only if you have the iphone.
But I like your house Hank, especially the color of the couch. -

The OWLE is really neat. I think many people will find this product useful. The quality is great. Even though the isteady is trying to compete with the OWLE, I do not think they have a very competitive product. The isteady is missing the compactness, nice structure, and mic.

Hey Everyone,
This is Graham from OWLE, I hear all of your concerns about why one wouldn’t just spend the $ on an independent camera instead of enhancing your iPhone.
All of your points are valid but there is one major reason why we went this way.
The iPhone is the only camcorder in the world that can shoot edit and upload video all on the same device. You can spends 1000’s of dollars on any number of cameras and not 1 has a 3g connection.
In the way that camera phones brought photography to the masses, video phones will enable us to document every moment and share it instantly.
I look forward to hearing you feedback!
Sincerely,
Graham R. McBain

This seems really cool. The weight would definitely help with stability and it has a nice design. Now if only I had an iPhone.

It is a very cool and a very useful item according to me. It looks durable and pretty neat. I would love to buy one and I’m thinking of that right now.

But before that, I’d like to know if the video quality gets enhanced due to the external lens or the video quality of the iPhone is retained? -

The OWLE is a good idea as an iPhone accesory. I’m curious to see how many people will buy this and then actually use it. It seems lime it is something that would sit on my shelf for quite some time. The iSteady though doesn’t seem like it copied that much. Saying the two products are similar is like trying to say that Burger King copies McDonalds. Lastly, I don’t know what resolution the iPhone shoots in, but I know I would rather just put $100 towards a full HD camera.

The guys do provide a good product for a low price. This quality of camera from Sony or another Brand Name company would probably cost upwards of $300, which is far further than what it costs for the OWLE. Of course, you do have to pay an arm and a leg for the IPhone itself, not to mention the ridiculous plan that is most common from ATT.

This is a great accessory for the iphone. I feel like the iphone is going to become the only electronic device you will need in your life.
-
Rohan Thakkar November 17th, 2009 at 12:15
This is a great product for only $100, when other cameras of such quality cost in the $400, Iphone has proven yet again it can have it all
-

This looks like a really great product, especially because I currently have an iphone.
-
Cool stuff although the reason i like using my iphone camera is for the portability and simplicity. If i wanted to to some Legit photography and video work, I’d prefer to use a better camera. To be completely honest, the iphone camera isn’t really that great either. My old sony ericsson had a whole bunch of options similar to a normal digital camera such as digital zoom, lighting options, effects, etc.
-
It seems cool, but I may not consider to buy it because I already have a camera that has similar functions. Anyway, iphone is cool always to attract so many adds.
-
What’s not to like..? maybe that it’s use is centered around the iphone! I jest, neat design but it seemed kind of heavy this morning, does it come with straps so you can wear it like a real camera? The only problem i see is the very specific level of the market, could never see myself just throwing it in my backpack
-
Quentin Campbell November 17th, 2009 at 13:44
Not bad. It looks a hell of a lot better than my phones video and pictures period. The price range is a little outrageous. Never the less this is an impressive piece of equipment that solves a common problem.
-
Yeah, the video is better than my phone’s. Let see if they’ll somehow grow from this to the quality of movies in theater. Wouldn’t that be a site to see? lol
-
Marisa Strupp November 17th, 2009 at 14:25
I really like this. It seemed very durable in class and IF i had an iPhone it would be a good investment for sure. I am looking forward to move videos and features it can do.

I really like the OWLE because of its design. Im not in the target audience though because I don’t have an iPhone. I also think that Steady Shot needs to stop acting as though the two devices are exact replicants. I mean Steady Shot has an obvious stick hanging out the back not to mention other design differences. If anything the websites may be similar but otherwise I don’t think that claim looks very valid at least to an outside viewer.

APPLE is laughing…

It looks and feels bulletproof. Weight might be an issue for some prospects, so maybe carbon fiber model or another material?
-
Chris Perry November 17th, 2009 at 18:41
They should make it ajustable so you can put other phones like the droid in it.

That is one thing I wish they would hurry up and change about the Palm Pre! They keep saying they’re going to come out with an upgrade for video. Very good quality on the video, by the way. I guess I have to admit that.
On another note, Brutti is adorable! So precious and sweet looking!

I don’t get how a $300 phone doesn’t have a great lense and a flash. The OWLE is a good idea but it will be useless when they come out with an iphone that has the features of the OWLE. Personally, I don’t like the OWLE because I don’t see how it is ten times better than the ipone. If it had a tripod I would like it, but I don’t think it’s all that great. I guess I’d have to use it.
-
Greg Forney November 17th, 2009 at 20:59
Those are are very impressive videos.
-
The video quality seems nice and the audio isn’t too bad. The frame was quite heavy and had a good grip on the iPhone. But. the whole thing becomes very bulky and therefore I think this thing will not go far in the market.
Although I agree with the person from owle that iPhone is the only camera where one can shoot, edit and upload video from the same device. I don’t know but this might be a huge + for it. -
Even though I think it’s a little big, it’s a cool idea to make iPhone better at taking pictures and videos

Zheng Wang November 17th, 2009 at 22:20
Though OWLE is good enough to enhance the function of iphones, I still think each high technology product has its concentrations,so it is still not comparable to cameras.
-
Erica Lied November 18th, 2009 at 02:09
The OWLE is such a nice device. It seems like a very sturdy helpful tool to make videos with the iphone. Also, the ways in which it enhances the video is amazing.
-
Jenna York November 18th, 2009 at 14:23
The OWLE is truly an awesome idea! It blows my mind how entrepreneurs can take something like the iPhones video and camera capabilities and make enhancements that put its abilities up against established video cameras.
-
Eugene November 18th, 2009 at 20:20
Seems like these guys really did do their research…I was also wondering why not buy a camera but he makes a valid point the iphone is a great device (despite my hatred for apple) that has capabilities you will not find on any other device
-
It would be interesting to see the same video that Hank shot with and without the OWLE so that a direct comparison could be made between video and audio quality. I like that it is heavier, it isn’t too heavy to hold and use but it’s heavy enough to add some stability. I know from photography that the heavier your tripod the more stable your shots are, it’s just the way it is. The one thing I didn’t like when Hank brought this to class was that I felt there was no where to put my left hand. Yes, it has the little extrusions on the bottom that you can hold on to, but my hand doesn’t fit. On the right side where there is no lens or microphone my hand fits great, on the left side I found myself constantly hitting the microphone with my fingers while I tried to hold onto the device.

This is a very interesting idea. I mean who would of thought to come up with something like this? If only I had the 3GS or I wish apple would just somehow update the 3G so I could get one.
-
Theresa Reinhart November 19th, 2009 at 13:11
I am extremely impressed by the stability of this technology when in use… and the quality of the video stream as well as the audio is nothing short of amazing.
-
Shawn Tomlinson November 19th, 2009 at 13:37
After watching the two videos and comparing them i think that the Owle is definitely a good product. I don’t know if it was more because of Owle or the iphone but the video from the combination of the two was much better quality than the video from the Droid. Just another thing to consider when making the comparison between iPhone and Droid.
-
Josh Johnson November 19th, 2009 at 14:52
This is a great product. It keeps the iPhone extremely still and focused and the video quality is great. The audio is very good as well, all in all it is a great product.
-
Kyle Chen November 19th, 2009 at 15:15
Once you build that OWLE for Droid Hank, be sure you bring it in to show us!!
-
Marisa Nakajima November 19th, 2009 at 17:24
Very interesting, but if one already has a camcorder or good camera quality and not an iphone this OWLE seems pritty useless unless they want to spend an extra $$$ few for something that’s not necessary and will be marketed down in the near future…
-
Kevin B. November 19th, 2009 at 18:05
Wow the video quality on that is really good. After watching the video of the Droid video tape the same path it is obvious OWL makes video so much more clear.
-
David Uhlenhake November 20th, 2009 at 00:19
From the comparison of the two videos that you showed in class, the OWLE iphone video and the droid video. I think the OWLE video turned out better. I think the lens really helps a lot.
-
Ross Peare November 20th, 2009 at 00:57
I still dont see why someone would buy this when they can buy an actually video recorder that has better quality.
-
Sungjae November 20th, 2009 at 16:21
I am really impressed with the video quality. I tried video taping with my friend’s i phone. However, it was really hard for me because it was shaky. After this OWL was invented, more people will be taking videos with iphone since it gives them more professional feeling. I think the price range is a bit expensive. Also, it was interesting the manager from OWLE said their device was the only one can shoot edit and upload video all on the same device.
-
Amber Illig November 24th, 2009 at 01:55
I like the idea of the OWLE. It also looks very sleek. However, it is pretty heavy. I wouldn’t be surprised if they come up with a newer version that is more compact, thinner and lighter. Also, in regards to the letter from the manager, I don’t think the other product is a direct copy of their product. If someone was going to copy the OWLE, I would hope they would do a better job, because it looks very primitive and bulky, like a rough prototype straight from a machining lab, used only for functionality testing. Weird.
