Droid + Qik = Uber Video
Posted on November 19th, 2009 41 comments
Background: A couple of semesters ago I decided to video several of my entrepreneurship classes. To do so, I bought a Canon GL-2 camera, and a Dell dual xeon workstation for about two grand. The setup worked OK, but took forever. An hour of classroom video took at least an hour to stream real time from the camera to the computer, and hours more of processing to turn into a video suitable for uploading, then hours more to upload. All this was a very time consuming process. Enter the Droid smartphone and the guys at Qik.com.
According to Crunchbase, “Qik enables live video casting over any cell network or wifi connection. Currently based in Redwood City, Qik went into private alpha in December 2007 and launched into public beta on July 21, 2008. Unlike sites where you have to wait for the video to be uploaded, Qik streams the video straight into the site with a delay of as little as half a second to two seconds.” The Droid is one of the first smartphones to offer 720X480 native video resolution. About a week ago, I read a post on TechCrunch that Qik.com was first out the box to support this resolution as a streaming resource and that those interested should request access to the closed beta. Last Saturday I requested such access, and no less than Bhashar Roy, one of Qik’s cofounders immediately responded with an invite. [Note aspiring entrepreneurs - it's Saturday and a cofounder is responding to email requests!]I followed his directions and now have DVD-quality streaming video from my Droid. No streaming of miniDVD video off a camera, no hours of processing video on a computer, no uploading, it’s just there. How far we’ve come in just a short span of time should be painfully obvious. I gave the dual xeon to a friend that runs a computer store in Lafayette; the Canon is in storage. I’m going with the Droid.
So what does it look like in operation? The video embedded below was shot with the Droid, handheld – no OWLE/bubo, but I did use the small microphone that came with the OWLE. See this past Tuesday’s blog for details. It is obvious to me that the Droid doesn’t do as well as the iPhone in low light conditions, and that the iPhone produced slightly better looking video than the Droid/Qik connection BUT, the latter uploaded itself without any input on my part. For that, I thank Droid and Qik.com for a very useful combination. And, the embed code was provided. Not that this is rocket science, but how many readers of this blog can readily whoop up the code? The Droid live streaming isn’t that bad either. You can however see a difference between the OWL and the phone. It’s interesting that you can use the attached microphone on your phone. Not bad Droid.

Well the simplicity of uploading the video seems nice but I don’t think the quality of the video is as good as an actualy video camera. But I am impressed with how the technology is getting so advanced with these new cell phones.

The droid and iphone seem to both have their advantages over each other, I say this because I have been trying to figure out which one is better and still don’t have a logical answer. Either way they can both do some amazing things!

The video looks about how I would expect a cell phone’s video to look. It doesn’t look great, but it gets the job done. The technology they have implemented to be able to stream video live like that is excellent. Hopefully as time progresses we will be able to do the same sort of thing with HD cameras.

I think it is so crazy to see how technology has changed so much so quickly. Hank said it was only a couple semesters ago that a previous technology was used using a Canon video camera. Now we are using cell phones to stream better-quality videos in a substantial less amount of time. I am anxious to see where we will go from here and how we will go about this same process in 2, 5, or 10 years.

The droid is very good as just a phone, even though the lighting is pretty dark [only complaint]. Its awesome that there is now a phone where it is extremely easy to stream video from phone to internet. AWESOME. I can only imagine how our society will be in the next 5 years. madness!

I think the droid is an amazing phone. I was very disappointed in the video quality tho. I understand that the iphone video shown to us in class had the added OWLE but its quality was 100X better. I think that because of the comparison the Droid is going to have to step it up!

It seems very simple to use but is that worth sacrificing quality?
-
Jim Smith November 19th, 2009 at 11:27
Thats pretty cool! Kind of sounds like you have figured out which one you like better!
And as far as sacrificing quality, its all in what you are trying to do. If you just want to show something off real quick, this would be a MUCH better way of doing it. I cannot actually think of a better way. But if you are doing something that you might edit and desire high quality, then no you probably wouldn’t use qik, but you also probably wouldn’t use a cell phone either.

The quality was not the same with the Droid as with the OWLE, but the simplicity of the Droid makes it very attractive. As a reader of this blog, I can not whoop up any code that’s for sure!
-
Like everyone else is saying, there’s a trade-off in quality for simplicity here, but, hey, chances are that something will come out that’ll trump the Droid and iPhone one of these days…

The speed is great for an impatient person like me. You weren’t kidding when you said there is a difference in quality. I’m not sure which I would choose, though. The speed would be great for imediately after making the video but I think I would miss the quality in the long run.

Qik is a great program. The ability to upload video as you take it is an invaluable ability that Qik has made available to us. The quality is really good on most of the videos i have seen on Qik and even though the iPhone’s video was higher quality than the Droid they both looked good on Qik.

I think the quality of the iPhone’s video was much better than the droid. Qik is really cool because you can upload the videos so quickly, I wish you would stop taping our presentations though! Haha

I think they are both about the same, both pretty good quality I think. Qik is very nice and conveinient to upload videos as well.

The droid video quality is very impressive.

I would agree that it didn’t work too well in low-light conditions as seen in class today. Definitely much more efficient than your previous setup though.

the droid and iphone both have their advantages and disadvantages. As for the droid’s side, it appears to have excellent video quality. The ability to upload the file almost instantly is another positive. It looks like it could give apple a run for their money. But i still see the iphone to continue the dominance in the cell phone world.

It’s actually decent compared to the lens used with the iPhone honestly. The comparison between both phones has been fun.

While it is cool, I still don’t think I would record something important on it when I have the option of using a nice video camera.
-
My friends who use iphone do not like to take pictures by iphone because the quality of the photos is not good. After watching the video, I think Droid does not have many advantages compared to iphone because the quality of the pictures seems the same.
-
The droid video quality is really nice and I really see much difference between the dim lights and bright lights videos today morning in class. And the fact that it uploads instantaneously to the internet is amazing. Another thing that Hank mentioned in class and that appealed to me was that even after shooting video for 45 mins the battery of the phone was more than 3/4 which is simple great. My take is that this phone will go a long way beating the iPhone.

The droid continues to impress me. I think it will continue to gain popularity and will eventually surpass the iPhone in sales. Verizon did a fabulous job with this phone!

The droid is a very cool item, I think i might change over from t mobile soon.

The droid video quality CANNOT the iPhone’s video quality at all. I feel like it’s a good phone indeed but iPhone’s better!

And also, I loved those orchids in the video!

This is a very cool feature. I can only imagine the things that it could possibly do for media in the future. I think back to the Iran crisis over the summer and think that if more of the citizens had the ability to use qik, then a lot more videos would have been on the web.
-
eugene November 20th, 2009 at 00:28
That is an amazing feature you can practically have a live webcast using the droid alone….in other terms 1 droid= TV studio.
-
eugene November 20th, 2009 at 00:29
david makes a good point…imagine the impact such a capability would have made in that crisis.

I like the feature on the droid but I wish it could deal with the low light better than it does. Still I remember the first video in the computer lab and it looked good.

I agree about the tradeoff of simplicity for quality. The features are pretty impressive, but I don’t think I would use most of them. I’d take one of these if it were given to me, but doubt I’d be willing to throw down the kind of money they are wanting for this. When it comes down to it my phone gets the job done and for less money. I’m sure this will be a success though, there will always be the trendy people that have to have the latest and greatest.

Personally I think the OWLE takes a better video, however considering that it is an enhancement for the iPhone, the Droid’s movie taking capabilities as a phone aren’t too far off.

I think iphones’ pictures have better qualities.

I felt droid is a better phone than i phone …

I think this is a great thing they have going on here. A direct up-link to a video website and its simple to use. This is a definite advantage over the iphone which may have a little better quality but less simplicity
-
Amber Illig November 24th, 2009 at 02:03
The iPhone with OWLE is a better quality combination than the Droid alone, but I am fairly certain that either Droid or the iPhone will come out in a new version that can function just as well as the iPhone plus the OWLE.

When it comes to phones I usually am not really a person who does much besides text and make phone calls. If I were looking to get a phone for other uses I would most likely go with the Droid

I think the Droid is a good choice over the Iphone and I have verizon so that makes it a lot easier for me.

There are many good phones are out there besides iphone which people don’t really know in the U.S. For instance, Nokia has the newest smart phone call N900, and Sony&Erisen has its X-series coming out.
Regarding to this blog, it was interesting to know that Moto improved its technology, and hope them keep up with it, and hope to hear more good info from them.
