India, Camshafts, Entrepreneurs and the Global Market
Posted on November 28th, 2009 37 commentsMonday, 11/30/09, Karan Shah, a Entrepreneurship Learning Community [ELC] student in my ENTR200 class last Fall is going to present his father’s company to my Marketing in a Global Economy [MGMT649] class. His girlfriend Mayura is a current ELC student in my ENTR200 class, and along with team mates Eugene and Zheng wrote the following blog entry. Hank
Introduction:
Precision Camshafts Ltd., Asia’s largest camshaft company was founded in the year 1993 and is based at Solapur, India. Its Managing Director is Mr. Yatin(48), a Sydenham College alumnus. He started this successful company from scratch and today it’s Asia’s largest and is marching towards being the World’s largest.
What is a camshaft?
A camshaft is a very vital part of an automotive engine as it controls how much fuel and water air [thanks Brent] enters the engine and how much exhaust is given out.
Here are a few pictures of the camshafts especially designed for customers under their belt:

Here’s some concrete information about this company:

In the Near Future:
- PCL will emerge as the most dominant player in India and will continue to enjoy 85 % share in the domestic market
- Will manufacture 13.5 Million Camshafts per year with Group sales crossing USD 125 million by the Year 2013 out of which 70 % coming from Exports
This company is surely doing its best in contributing to India’s Global identity. Here’s a link to a video where Mr. Yatin Shah takes the opportunity on the Republic Day of India of talking about his company and India in the global market today:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LDG1VJRhw4Y
We would also like to share a newspaper article published about this company. http://www.indiacar.net/news/n48096.htm
The remarkable part about this company when it bought out a UK based company- G Clancey, which was its 51% stakeholder. It was a very critical yet, a very remarkable decision taken by PCL.

So, it’s the small beginnings that lead to bigger accomplishments. They could start off in the minds of young entrepreneurs like us and end up transforming into international companies like this one!

This is a very interesting blog after a long gap. I didn’t know that this company was the only single source to customers like Tata Motor, Hyundai, Ford India. Nice to hear…Impressed by the way the ENTR200 class is going.I wish the company would become the world’s best.

It sounds like this company has reached its own special niche in the market making it successful. Misspelled my name on the last one.

I like stories like this but I want more details of how they started and what moves they made to become so successful.

Lyndsey S. November 29th, 2009 at 22:47
Big things are coming for PCL! I also agree with Chris though. I think the starting out details are of a great interest of mine at this point; however, the success stories alone are good motivation and inspiration!

“fuel and water” should be fuel and air right?
-
Mayura Davda November 30th, 2009 at 01:37
I’m very excited about today’s presentation!
-
I know Karan personally and he is a gem of person, never knew about his dad and his company before. I think this venture is amongst the top in the country. I just read the statistics and their expansion plans and I am no doubt that this company is going to rock the industry with >90% market share.

Marisa Strupp November 30th, 2009 at 10:34
Looks like the company found what there good at and it looks like it is also working for them. Too bad our class will be missing out on the presentation.

The fuel and water thing made me laugh, but otherwise the company seems to have something here.

This seems like a very successful company that could really help India become a respected industrial nation. I had no idea one of the largest manufactureers of camshafts was based in India. That was really suprising to me.

Awesome to see a company just starting out and continuing to make headway. Its funny to think that every innovation has a starting point and every company starts off little and then becomes large. Every entrepreneur knows that in order to become a leader in a certain market or field they have to take those first few steps: putting themselves out there and building a trusted name off of a good product or service.

Jenna York November 30th, 2009 at 13:47
Wow, continued success is definitely on the horizon for this company! Great to see they found a niche market !

Asia and India’s markets are fleshing out to be the biggest producers of products anywhere and have steadily been climbing due to cost and time. I can understand how the global market is being affected by something such as this. Seems all automobiles, including their parts, have moved overseas. Guess it’s not just the ‘American’ dream anymore. Everything seems to be going great. Good luck to you.

I hope this company continues to go well. It’s not like it will lose its usefulness any time soon. It’s a well thought out and carried out business.

Mayura Davda November 30th, 2009 at 19:50
I’m sorry about that – fuel and ‘water’ mistyping in our blog. And thanks to Brent and Hank for correcting that.
And I appreciate all of the above wishes and comments for the company.
Also, for those of you who would like to know more about the company and need more details, feel free to email me questions on mdavda@purdue.edu or you can simply check out the company’s official website- http://www.pclindia.inThanks

I never knew that so many manufacturers relied on this company for camshafts. I’m really into cars and didn’t know that, I wonder if any aftermarket companies have this company produce their camshafts.
-
I didn’t know about this company either. They’re really doing well for themselves…GM, Daimler, BMW, Ford, Tata, etc…..How’d these guys find their way into so many auto companies
-
Aaron Curtis November 30th, 2009 at 20:37
This company seems like it it headed in all the right directions.
-
That’s pretty cool how they grew to be so large. Good for them. Keep making quality products and the success will continue.

This company is so cool, i was really surprised places like India had been developing this specific cam shaft. I wanted to check out their manufacturing process, however their homepage isn’t detailed about this. But it seems to be emerging fast since it purchased partner G clancey. As reading the article, this company had a competitor, used significant financial resources to start this company from the beginning. I think the successful skills of the founder and having the international relationship with other countries enabled them success.

The company i worked at over the summer bought a lot of their parts from companies outside of the U.S. It is definitely a good sustainable business model.

WOW. It is amazing to think that something started in the 1990s can be Asia’s largest company today. The work that they do is so important to so many different things we overlook on a daily basis. I think it was a really neat blog to read about.

India has been a fast developing country in Asia besides China, and it produces all different kinds of products and services to the world. According to the information provided above, I, personally, think that in order to compete with India, China has to learn more advanced technologies from developed countries, and share the complementary knowledges with each other.

This company is a testament to the globalization of business…a few years ago, the concept of an Indian company growing to dominate its chosen market would have been crazy….there are really good fertile markets outside the U.S as aspiring entrepreneurs, those are markets that we need to take a close look at.

This is an interesting blog, this is amazing
-
Amber Illig December 3rd, 2009 at 13:19
I am not that interested in cars either, but I like to see a company that found a niche and did something about it, and ended up rising to the top. Great success story!
-
Josh Johnson December 6th, 2009 at 20:21
This sounds very interesting. This is a very innovative company.
-
Nathan Ferguson December 8th, 2009 at 20:14
This company wil be a household name before you know it.
-
Theresa Reinhart December 8th, 2009 at 20:41
It is crazy to think that such a small company turned into such a large and successful, international business that it is today and it is truly inspiring for us, young and struggling entreprenuers to gain confidence in what we believe in.
-
Heath Hiatt December 8th, 2009 at 21:26
I agree with Nate. This company is just on the brink of become a common name.
-
Alex Conkright December 10th, 2009 at 05:44
I think this is an extremely interesting company. I would be interested to find out what kind of impact flex fuels and other “green” energies will have on this company.
