  • The Hustler’s 10 Commandments (by Hotep)

This blog was submitted by Team 9 of my Entrepreneurship Learning Community ENTR200 class. Hank

Throughout the first semester of our careers at Purdue University, I am sure that we, students of ENTR 200, have learned a lot about what it takes to be a true entrepreneur.  As we should have learned in the class, we must get our noses outside of the “entrepreneurship” textbook and begin our journeys as entrepreneurs.  Even though we must start begin our entrepreneurial careers sometime in the very near future, it does not mean we cannot continue our research on entrepreneurial strategies and techniques that will give us an edge above other fellow entrepreneurs-in-training.  Of the many books that we can read to study on strategies and tips, (such as the Art of War, 48 Laws of Power, 33 Strategies of War, and the 50th Law), there is one more book that we can add to the collection.

The Hustler’s 10 Commandments is based on 10 common laws that have been used by many of the world’s most powerful, wealthy, and influential people.  As quoted in the book’s website, “The Hustler’s 10 are based off of various proven strategies for success and self empowerment used by self-made millionaires, entrepreneurs, political leaders, business tycoons and spiritual gurus.”  The “10 commandments” are as follows:

This book definitely looks like a good addition to a collection of recommended entrepreneurial books.  Everyone should definitely check it out.

  • “Human limitations are nearly always self imposed”

    1

is a quote I came up with while I was in college.  It popped into my head one afternoon while driving to the mall to work at my part-time job selling shoes.  I thought of it because I had read something about Roger Bannister, the first man to run less than a 4 minute mile, which he accomplished in 1954.   I thought of it because the manager I worked for at the time was close to the age that I am now, and he had never tried to be anything more than a manager of a small shoe store.  Today he is still managing that same shoe store, 25 years later.

Until 1954, no one had ever run a mile under 4 minutes because no one believed it could be done.  Since then it’s been done numerous times and the record has continually been broken, second by second.  How many times have we been told that anything is possible and yet many of us must know for sure that something is possible before we believe that we are able to achieve it?

Think about it.  Why do some people believe they can do something that is seemingly impossible, and then they strive with all of their might to do it regardless of their circumstances in life? They visualize their dream; 2face their fears head on and forge ahead to pursue that dream.  Some succeed, and some fail.  What is it that stops the rest from ever even trying?  Is it better to have tried and failed than never to have tried at all? The video below says it all. BbB

  • Hip-Hop Entrepreneurs

Today’s blog is by Team 1 of my noon Learning Community Class. Hank

    Jay-Z – Hustler Mentality

1There have been many hip hop entrepreneurs in the recent generation. Arguably, the most financially successful hip hop artist and entrepreneur in America is Jay Z. His estimated net worth is $350 million.

Shawn Corey Carter, also know as “Jay-Z,” was born December 4, 1969 in Brooklyn New York. Jay Z was raised amongst four by a single mother in the projects. “When I left the block, everyone was saying I was crazy, I was doing well for myself on the streets, and cats around me were like these rappers…they just record, tour, and get separated from their families, while some white person takes all their money. I was determined to do it differently,” he said in a New York Metro interview.

Just as Jay Z stated, most successful entrepreneurs stem from an attitude of wanting to do something different, as demonstrated in the disruptive innovation model. He’s always had that hustler mentality, the drive to make nothing into something. He just learned how to do something positive and productive with it. He is the president and CEO of Def Jam/Roc-a-Fella Records, has his own shoe line and Rocawear clothing line, and co-owns The 40/40 Club located in New York City, Atlantic City, and Las Vegas.

50 Cent – Get Rich or Die Tryin’

Multiplatinum rap artist Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson has been an icon in the hip-hop industry since his debut album Get Rich or Die Tryin’ released in 2001 2003. Four albums later, not

including projects with his group G-Unit, 50 has amassed millions of dollars through record sales, endorsements, and, most notably, the Coca-Cola acquisition of Glaceau’s Vitamin Water line. He has made Forbes’ lists for his wealth. His rags to riches story has been made into not one, but two films – Get Rich or Die Tryin’ and his most recent film Before I Self Destruct. His story of success as a musician and entrepreneur has inspired many of his contemporaries to get into entrepreneurial ventures. But how did he get to be where he is now?

His first great success came after the release of his critically-acclaimed debut Get Rich or Die Tryin’. To date, this album has sold over 12 million copies worldwide. He followed this album with another multiplatinum record The Massacre. These albums along with his subsequent works with G-Unit netted 50 a great deal of money. However, Curtis did not depend on record sales alone to make him money. He invested his money in creating startups like G-Unit Clothing and G-Unit films. Companies like these along with lucrative endorsement deals have placed 50 Cent at the top of hip-hop entrepreneurs. His mind is focused on the next big thing and he rarely has free time. His rise to fame and success has been unrivaled by any rapper in recent history with the exception of Jay-Z.

He has written a book with author Robert Greene called The 50th Law. In this book, 50 uses personal anecdotes along with the theme of fear to teach readers how to be successful. His success is a testament to the fact that anyone can be successful, but you have to have the mentality to do so.
