  • Useful iPhone App: NTRConnect

In over 100,000 130,000 and counting apps available for the iPhone, there are actually some that have potential use for entrepreneurs on the go. Recently [1/21/10], InfoWorld’s Curtis Franklinwrote an article titled “10 Top-Notch iPhone Apps for Enterprise Users.” Number 4 on the list was an app named NTRConnect which is the subject of this blog. This blog demos running a HP Quad-Core from the iPhone.

Available in both a ‘free” and a “Pro” version, with the “free” download coming automatically with a 30 day preview of the ‘Pro” version, setup was absolutely trivial. I did a search on apps from my iPhone, downloaded and installed the iPhone app, then went to our Quad-Core daily work horse, then to www.ntrconnect.com, and downloaded and installed the “server side” app. Next up was the typical registration including a user name and password, and we were off and running. The app runs in the background on the Quad/server, while the client on the iPhone must be brought up. Once this is done, and your UN/PW entered, in this case, on the iPhone, you are off and running. See the video below for a Q&D demo. With this running, you’ll never leave home with something on your work station again. It just works at a zero price. And no, there is not a NTRConnect app for the Droid – I checked.  Hank

    1. This is a pretty neat feature. This reminds me of an app I got off of itunes a couple years ago called iremote. This app allowed me to control my itunes account from a wireless connection. It was pretty neat because I was able to control the volume and change songs on my desktop that is connected to speakers, while I am anywhere in the house. It was a free app and was pretty handy to change songs and adjust the volume. THe NTR Connect app would be a pretty cool app for the same reasons as well as being able to use other features that you have on your desktop.

    2. I have an iPhone and sometimes I get so overwhelmed by how many aps are available that I’ve stopped downloading them. This ap sounds incredibly helpful though. I think I’ll have to check it out

I think this app has more use for the “road warriors” of the world, than the everyday person. However, it seems incredibly useful if there is a file one forgot to bring along that remains on a folder in their main computer.

Along those lines, I also think it is more useful for files than for programs, as most programs for the iPhone are optimized for that platform.

Over the long term evolution of the internet, I think this may be useful when people adapt their web browsing habits to the home entertainment systems, aka big screen TVs. Imagine browsing the web on a 55″ TV and using your iPhone as the touch screen navigator….pretty frickin’ cool!

I’ve always wondered why remote access applications weren’t widely available for cellphones – something like this is perfect for nearly everyone.

If there isn’t one for Droid, there may not be one for other smart phones (like the new top of the line Nokia, which is nearly completely devoid of apps but is easily the most powerful on the market). This could be a potential way for the makers of this app to expand.

    5. This is pretty awesome. It definitely has lots of potential for people who need or want access to their home desktop remotely. This app might also come in handy with the new ipad tablet that apple has recently developed; bigger screen same concept.

I think this app is a great idea and i will definitely download it, at least for the free trial period. It seems like it could be an extremely useful app, because of the reasons Mr. Morgan stated and also I personally hate going to the computer labs at Purdue and forgetting that I have the file I’m looking for on my personal computer…and vice versa. I think Hank explained in class that you could access your computer from anywhere and move files wherever you wanted, which would be extremely useful if I wanted to email myself a word or powerpoint document. Great idea, but I wish it was free forever!

    7. It looks cool but all these mobile remote desktop applications I think are useless. It is painful to get anything done, you have to leave your computer on and connected all the time, to run a simple program on your computer it takes you 10 times longer to get connected and to finagle around to get it started and in view, if anything graphical is happening on the screen (anything 3D, video, or just graphic accelerated) the remote desktop software freaks out and eats up your bandwidth (which is hard to come by on 3G). Its an old trick and actually came out of the box on my phone, made by Microsoft and been in Windows Mobile for the past 4-5 years (i remember playing with it as a freshman in high school).

This app sounds interesting. If you like this app and using your iPhone to the fullest capability I recommend you jail break your iPhone. I am no computer mastermind but because this hack is so easy I got it. All you need to do is go to http://blackra1n.com/ and download the hack while your phone is plugged in. Once done after a few seconds you will be able to get a lot more cooler apps than this one blogged about and have the oppurtunity to individualize your phone.

      Check it out

it’s cool, fun, easy to do and just silly if you don’t.

    9. This sounds like a pretty good idea but from what I hear, it’s not a good as it sounds like it would be. It aparently is not very efficient or fast. But if you did forget an important file at home and you have to have it, then it would definately come in handy.

    10. Once again another reason to get the iPhone! I think this app is something that would be useful for any person it allows the user to access his/her home or work computer whenever they may possibly need it. Even though its not fast I think in the future as technology continues to grow it will become faster and more efficient.

    11. I have an iPhone and its great. This is just another reason of why the iPhone is so superior to other phones. I do not know another phone that is able to control a computer. It seems from Hank’s video that there are some kinks that have to be smoothed out though.

    12. If I had a computer than ran 24/7 this would be great! too bad all my desktops died. It seems like a hassle to have to scroll all over the iphone to get to navigate the computer. This would be perfect for the iPad though.

I have an app called WiFi-Touchpad ($1.99) that allows me control my computer through the same network connection. The app is great for streaming movies to a media PC and other applications. NTRConnect is even more disruptive in that it allows the user to control it from a different network. Pretty cool that its free!

    14. I’ve been using a program for sometime call VNC mocha. It has been in the app store for a while and it works pretty smoothly over a LAN network but its not perfect. I’ll have to try out this new offer and see how it weight against that one. Regardless apps like these are very useful in raising productivity.

    15. Nice app. Unfortunately it isn’t available in Android Market so I can’t use it on my nexus1 :( But beware …. the Android Market is expanding pretty quickly.

    16. A similar app is available for the nexus1.
You’ll should check out this video, the android is coming up with some pretty cool stuff.

    17. This app will be really useful for few people and really entertaining for many people!

    18. Wow this is a very cool app. I am going to have to download this one. It seems like it will make my life easier.

    19. Taylor Gelsosomo

It’s nice that it allows a person to test the application for free before having to make a commitment to it. This will probably become a very popular app.

    20. I don’t really see much use for it other than a few certain things. The iphone is slow enough anyway accessing you computer could be a bit tedious. As an iphone owner i would not download this app for sure.

    21. It seems like a pretty cool app and could have the potential to be pretty useful. I don’t know if I would download it if I had an iPhone though because, as Brian said, the iPhone is pretty slow already and accessing your desktop could just make it worse. I mean my roommate is always having problems with his iPhone.

    22. Spencer Childers

yeah im gonna download this app as well.. it sounds super interesting. the idea of the app is sweet.. i wonder if they will expand it.

    23. Amanda Edmondson

For someone who does not own an iPhone, I feel a bit lost when we talk about all these apps. However, I really like the video Hank posted because it helped me understand what the app actually does. I am on the fence as to how successful it will be. People who are very technology savvy will think this is a cool new gadget they have to try out. However, the person who owns an iPhone just because it’s an iPhone would probably not get much use out of it. The plus to the app is that it’s a free download and you get a 30 day free trial of the Pro version. I think that this will potentially draw in some people because everyone loves free stuff and will try it just for that reason.

    25. Hi Hank, Thanks for checking out NTRconnect. Stay tuned for Droid…

      Cheers, Heidi Wieland, NTRglobal

    26. Courtney M. Cronk

That’s pretty sweet. what would happen if say your wife was using the desktop, and you were out of town and decided to use this nifty feature, would it still work?

    27. That can be a very useful app. I have the one for my itunes where i can control the music and itunes remotely, which has been very useful. We will set the computer up in itunes, connect it to the sounds system and hide it away. Than I can use my phone to change the music. This is a much more advanced version and I am sure will be very useful, expecially if one chooses to set the the computer connected to a big screen that is mounted out of the way,

    28. Droid Does. There is an app that is the same thing. Droid has many remote desktop apps and this is nothing new. Big question is Why would you use your phone to navigate your computer when your computer is 5 inches from you…

    29. Blake Bronowicki

This applicaiton seems very useful in accordance with a desktop computer. I however do not own an iPhone but it looks to me like it is very beneficial. Apple keeps on designing cool and new innovative applications that are makinng life easier and actually designed to help you get more out of the whole device too.
