Unless you reside under a rock, you are aware that Apple last week announced the iPad. As Purdue students in ENTR200 or interested entrepreneurs passing by, here’s the deal: what is important about the announcement is not yet another device from Apple that you love, hate, take sides on, can’t afford, won’t afford or are indifferent about, but “How can I build a business around what the iPad does offer?” [See chart at bottom for negatives on iPad.] Since iPad development is built on the same Software Development Kit (SDK 3.2) as the iPhone, iPhone developers have a huge leg up developing for this new device. See here for the economics of app development.

Patrich Thibodeau in a 1/29/10 post captures the essence when he wrote: “The iPad is partly a device but it is mostly an economic development platform. It’s an accessible means for a lot of independent people to create new value and that’s the real genius of Apple’s product. The only reason why the iPad matters at all is for its ability to expand the Apps market.

I have previously announced that Tim Watson [Twitter] [LinkedIn], a junior in CS @ Purdue University and a iPhone developer- 4 apps, will speak to our ENTR200 classes Tuesday. I have asked Tim to provide enough info to get those interested in development up and running, and those with ideas/concepts an overview of what’s involved in getting an idea to”click here” on iTunes, all of this in 1/2 hour or so! But wait, there’s more!

The iPad offers lots more real estate than the iPhone (9.7″ versus 3.5″ screen for instance). What are some of the ways this increased capability may be taken advantage of? This past Saturday, I was one of the judges for nine Student Veteran Organizations (SVOs) competing for funding under the auspicious of Purdue’s Operation Diploma which in turn is under the Military Family Research Institute [www.fmri.purdue.edu]. Sara Appel, an Outreach Specialist was there assisting with the competition and has some solid ideas for use of the iPad++++app development to help students with disabilities. She will address the class first for about 15 minutes, then Tim. Oh, and you can guess which one is Tim in the photo at left. Stay tuned. And Colleen who commented on Saturday’s blog “I would love to see some of the abstract games I play in my head realized on my iPhone,” there is no reason you can’t. 1. Cool, I can’t wait to meet and hear Tim’s thoughts and experiences. The tweetfeel is a really cool statistic. The iPad is a great new device to try and make a business under. It isn’t as constrained as the iPhone was in terms of what people want to do on their phone. I’m still scared about working with Apple. I feel like they will rape me with royalties and screw me if they get the chance, like they did with Google and countless other people.

    2. I’ve been interesting in App development for quite awhile can’t wait to hear from them

    3. It will definitely be interesting to get a rundown on app development, but for the vast majority, this whole app gold rush seems more like a way to pick up a little money than a business that will sustain you.

    4. If I were Colbert’s daughter I would definitely have said he was cool when he whipped out that iPad. I don’t care that it’s a big iTouch or that it has a silly name. Anything Apple is hott.

    5. Anthony Sikorski

The iPad seems like another way for people to make money off of new and innovative apps. I don’t think the iPad will be as popular as a iPhone or iPod but I bet that all the Apple fanatics will get one and encourage others. All these people will create a big enough market for new apps to succeed.

    6. Alexandra Graves

I’m really interested in hearing from both speakers. I hope that maybe it’ll trigger some ideas in one of my classmates or myself to design an app for the new ipad. It would be interesting to know what people can come up with.

    7. I am really looking forward to hearing Tim talk in class tomorrow. The best part about the iPad is that even though people seem to love or hate it, you know people will buy it because it is Apple and because it is something new.

I imagine there will be lots of revisions to the original, but it is in conversations everywhere. I wonder if Apple had anything to do with Colbert bringing it out at the Grammys?

    8. I dont particularly care for the ipad. Although I do see the potential for making money and making a business and providing great apps for it. Im looking forward to tuesday to hear what this app developer has to say.

    9. Curtis Brackett

I’m excited to hear what Tim has to say about the possible development and expansion of the Apps available for the iPad on Tuesday. I believe there is potentially millions and millions of dollars to be made as new Apps are developed. As far as the popularity of the actual iPad itself I agree with Anthony, I don’t believe the iPad will be anywhere near as popular as the iPod or iPhone, but undoubtedly loyal Apple fans will purchase one.

    10. Though I think the ipad is a neat gadget that will grab techies attention for a little while, I do not see it as a viable product just yet. However, I am interested to learn more about the app development procedures. This is something that I think could be a big hit based on the fact that apps can be used on iphones, ipods, and now the ipad. One great opportunity could mean a great future!

    11. Gahhh… Google “how to start with an Apple development kit” and let me know what you find. come on now people we really shouldnt need a set time in our day to have our hand held to learn about something. that’s not very entrepreneurial of us.

    12. I am really excited to see what they have to offer us. The i-phone-pad-touch, really all have a great system that lets anyone try his or her hand at making a great app. Also Stephen Colbert ftw!

    13. That’s pretty interesting. I remember hearing about the guy that developed the ishoot app and made over a million dollars but I feel that most app developers only make a small amount of money initially but unless they keep developing new apps it can’t be considered a business.

The significance of the iPad, while less innovative than the iPhone and iPod Touch, is nonetheless apparent to the road warriors and students.

Just imagine being able to carry one device that allows you to read your text books, email, IM, order movie tickets, browse the web, and countless other functions in the palm of your hand. Instead of carrying three books to class, you have 1.5 lbs of tech. Pretty cool.

Imagine this in high schools. Look at all the paper savings. Eliminate such a wasteful and hurtful industry, and streamline operations for an increased tech savvy future generation. There is nothing like hands-on to be sure, but does that really require paper any longer?

Opening a platform that allows such expanse of opportunity is, as controlled as it may seem, an open mind’s dream.

    15. I look forward to hear what he has to say in class. I think that it is great that students at Purdue are dealing with new and uprising technology!

    16. Looking forward to the class!

    17. I have been interested in developing apps for a while now. It will be nice to hear from someone who had successfully made apps talk about the process and their experiences.

    18. Since 2 weeks I didn’t even know what was an apps. I don’t have an Iphone (I know we are few in this situation at Purdue)but I still very interested by this kind of gold rush.

This is a phenomenal, great, awesome, cool, excellent, gorgeous breakdown of the adjective laden keynote for the iPad launch…..funny as hell!

the iPad seems to be a very intersting development that came out of Apple, but the big size of it is not too appealing to me. I can’t wait to see people walking around with them, but I do see a lot of things that Apple can do to make it a lot more efficient as stated in the pie graph. If there appear to be a lot of issues with the iPad, it could discriminate against people purchasing them, but then again, it does look like a nice phenomenon that could be a big success for Apple.

    21. Let’s not overlook what Apple did that was more or less entrepreneurial. They reinvented an already successful product and gain attention their product. Now that we have a more manageable sized app carrier the possibilities are endless as to what this devise could be used for. I want one!

    22. apple is undoubtably a great forum for innovation i hope our speaker can explain how the code can be written in lamenst terms for those of us who arent quite as computer savvy as CS majors. if it is a difficult code to write i would like to hear some suggestions for software programs that simplify the process. if these software programs arent around i would like someone to invent them.

    23. I agree with Blake, the iPad does seem to be interesting but its big size is not all that appealing to me. If I maybe got to use one and see what all it does and everything I might like it more and want one of my own but for now I will have to pass. It will be better to wait anyways so they can make any improvements to it they find necessary. I am excited to hear in class how apps are made for iPhones and iPods. I have always wondered how they were made and I finally get to find out.

    24. The big size of the IPAD seems pretty interesting, but it is not convenient. One positive thing is that the IPAD may work a very nice entertainment system. Doing things such as surfing the web, playing games with friends and music at parties but on a larger scale could be a selling point for the IPAD.

    25. Justin de la Chi(cago)

One last addendum if you are still thinking of the unliklihood that the iPad will be successful. Two words…..baby boomers.

    26. Haha does that girls shirt say Slut? And oh yeah, about the iPad. I think it’s too big for most people to consider convenient. It almost seems like Apple is running out of ideas. The iPad doesn’t seem all that different from an iphone or ipod touch except it took the best part of both of them and made it worse, the size. I’m sure it will still be a successful product and I must admit that it does look really cool. A lot of people will probably buy it simply because it’s new technology and they can afford it, but I wouldn’t expect it to be as successful as their other products. Unless the iPad offers apps that the iphone or itouch don’t have I don’t think it will last long.

    27. I am very excited for our guest speaker! Using other companies inventions to make yourself a quick buck is a great idea! I agree with Andrew though, I don’t think the ipad will be as succesful as the iphone/itouch

    28. I look forward to hearing from Tim! I am also interested to learn more about the iPad. I think it’s a great idea but a little large and too fragile to just carry around all the time. Stephen Colbert is the man.

    29. It is tough to say if the iPad is really going to take off any more than the iPod or iPhone. In the end it will most likely be a portion of iPod/iPhone users to begin using the iPad. But it leaves a lot more options for App Developers.

    30. Zachary Mirsberger

Though the iPad at its forecasted price point when you add on the monthly service charges is a niche product, it could find a nice home in the business world to take when traveling. This could be a very profitable platform for app developers. I’m looking forward to the presentations tomorrow.

    31. Hank I appreciate the comment, I look forward to Tim’s presentation, maybe I’ll be able to produce the next big app. Unless the Ipad drastically expands its capabilities, it’s going to go down in history as a major apple whoops. One of the principles of successful entrepreneurship is to offer a good or service that hasn’t been seen before, is of a higher quality, or at a lower cost. The Ipad doesn’t do any of these. And guess what? I have seen the Ipad before! I can see it anytime I want when I put my Iphone under a magnifying glass. Is Steve Jobs just getting bored or did some chick from Barnes & Noble piss him off? I really don’t get the appeal of the Ipad besides the fact that it looks different, and frankly (maybe I’m just immature) but the name makes me uncomfortable.

Oh I think I was supposed to comment on how the big doofy looking screen on the Ipad can be useful, but sorry guys, I’m going to leave that marketing miracle to Apple.

    32. Soroosh Karamyar

Apple has made new markets with the ideas and products they come up with. the iPad is just another surprise.
The app wars between companies is only producing more and more entrepreneurs as well. Now if only I could get going and make my own app!!

    33. As a senior in computer technology (CIT) here at Purdue, I’ve had direct experience developing applications for mobile phones. I’ve developed apps for two platforms: Windows Mobile and Google’s Android. I’ve also seen and read a lot about Iphone development, and it seems one of the single biggest reasons the Iphone app store is currently light years ahead of Microsoft’s and Google’s marketplaces is the standard hardware.

Until now with the Ipad, every single Iphone offers the exact same hardware specification: screen size, features, etc. This makes it very easy for a developer who doesn’t have to concentrate on coding for several different devices on the same platform.

My question then is: How will the Ipad shake this up? Now apple developers will have to write extra code to take advantage of the Ipad’s features. How different is the new SDK for these features than the standard Iphone SDK?

    34. Sandino Cavallo

One thing that I wondered that the iPad would do is function as a drawing pad for graphic applications such as Photoshop. Maybe someone could make an app for that as well as a pen for more precise movement.

    35. The new iPad brings up new and interesting opportunities for developers of applications. If I had the time I would definitely be interested in researching and developing apps for the new iPad

    36. I think that Tim’s ideas were amazing. He has actually inspired me to download STK to my Mac and try building apps. I think is a very great idea because first of all its free to build an app, it allows you to be creative, and if Apple accepts your app then you have a chance to make some money off something you just built from scratch and watch people from all over the world download the app to their own personal iPhones. I really hope to develop something that is truly one of a kind that many students will be able to use and also people in the Lafayette area. I will try my best to keep the class updated and what is going on and possibly give the class my idea and try to get some feedback on what you guys think about it.

    37. I never thought app development could be as easy as Tim described. As soon as I upgrade my OS I’ll have to take a look at designing an app of my own!

    38. I think Tim has a great idea. But I’m not sure the iPad is going to make a big hit like the iPod touch or iPhone because it’s almost the same just a little bigger. So make programs for the iPad but still support the iPhone.

    39. Courtney M. Cronk

as far as the negatives of the ipad, its pretty funny because before i read this my boyfriend and his dad where making feminine hygeine jokes about it. they too also think it is just a larger, more expensive iphone.

in regards to the guest speakers, they were amazing!! i told my boyfriend about the app development since he wants a new make, and is in CGT so he already took some coding classes. he, however, did not seemed as pumped about it as i was. I now want to go out and by a mac so i can make some new app developements. I think i’d need to take a coding class first though.
