Worth Checking Out: TVGorge
Posted on February 6th, 2010 20 commentsHulu.com and all the other online TV sites has a new competitor that’s worthwhile checking out named TVGorge.com. Looks like there are on the order of 130 or so TV shows, some like 24 archived in their entirety. What’s really superior about this site is the superior video quality.
On their “About” page, they state: “TVGorge.com’s mission is to bring high quality streaming television shows to the masses. We accomplish this by searching and indexing TV streaming websites around the globe. Once our proprietary script has found the best source for a given TV show, it automatically compiles the information for our database.”
Check it out. No info on who’s behind it. Hank

This is great. Since I’ve been in college I’ve had to rely on online streaming sites to keep up with my favorite TV shows. In high school, I thought everyone’s life stopped on Thursday nights during new episodes of the office, but since I’ve been in college I’ve found others like to schedule group meetings during this time. It’s good to know I have another option of catching up on some episodes.

Paying for cable is 20th century. Its so easy to find what you want to watch online and with a small purchase of a cable you can stream the video on your TV.
This website has all the shows I like!!! Just bookmarked it.thanks hank

I just bookmarked this site too! I watched an episode of The Big Bang Theory and the quality was really good. The best part is that you don’t have to watch the commercials. I seem to always miss my favorite shows because of class related projects, meetings, etc. but now I can just visit TVGorge.com.

Pluses: NO Geo Restriction (unlike Hulu), No/Less Ads, Simple Layout
Minuses: Uses Embed (slower), Less TV shows (I couldn’t find Jon Stewart) and Not polished like Hulu
Lets hope this stays afloat

I think this is a great site. We can watch a lot of tv shows during the time that is convenient for us. It also has a great video quality.

I think this is very cool. I personally have never really spent much time watching tv shows online (clearly I need to catch up on the times) But, I definitely plan to especially now that there is a very clear and reliable source.

I like the website, but it has a lot of work ahead of it. I am still trying to figure out the legality of everything, but if they don’t get sued like torrent search engines (the pirate bay), they could be a contender. I think Hulu has a firm foothold with their partnerships in the industry though.

All legalities aside, the fact that there are TV shows for the public is great. This makes is so easy for anybody to see shows without having to worry about tuning in at a specific time.

they wont get too far with this idea. youtube and hulu have a monopoly on things. hulu.com is easy to type in and spell. tvgorge you have to think about the spelling and i just dont think people will buy into this idea. all they are trying to do is compete with youtube, and youtube has more money

I have to keep this in bookmarks. I like the idea of competition between the video sites. The quality is acceptable and best part it’s FREE!

I think this website will not have enough competitive power if it just depends on the quality of picture. Also I do not think it did well in this point. I watch the gossip girl and the picture is not clear. Even if the picture is high qualified, it will affect the Inernet speed, which will decrease the audiences when they have to wait to watch movies.

I don’t think people will care that much about quality. I would rather just get the opportunity to watch TV shows over quality since I understand It is going to be on the computer. Like earlier posters. Speed and convenience is much bigger priority for me than quality. The tv show industry does not mass special effects. There is no desire to want great quality without a need for it.

I am not sure if its going to give other websites that stream TV shows much competition. I believe if a person is already used to HULU or a website similar, he or she is just going to stick to it, people don’t like change too much.

TVGorge is pretty sweet, but I am pretty sure they are playing illegal copies of the shows. Ill still use it for non hulu content, but makes me wonder about its long term viability. Once it starts to compete it will get shut down or become another hulu. There is a reason Hulu is geo restricted and has ads, content providers demand it.

I’m unsure how long this website will be in business before it gets legal notices/take down requests.
For instance on the front page, they advertise that they have TrueBlood, a show on HBO, which is a pay-for network. They definitely do not put TrueBlood on the web, and when visiting the page to try to watch it I get this error:
“TVGorge is hard at work improving our indexing service and recompiling our database in order to serve you better.
For a short period of time (days), we will not be displaying any 3rd party videos. However, below you will find a list of external links for this episode that have been submitted by our users.Don’t worry – things will be back to normal soon and we have many great new features in store so check back soon!”
The links they provide are to a site named MegaVideo which I’ve run into in the past, and it is a scam site that tries to get its users to install malware/spyware.
I’ll stick with Hulu for streaming video.

I like to hear that there is another website for me to watch my shows because we dont get cable in my sorority house, but most shows I watch I can find them on the website of the station(abc, cbs, ect). Although there are commercials unlike sites like hulu and TVgorge, I am always scared to get a virus from websites like that.

This looks pretty interesting, but I see that they have links to shows that are shown on HBO and Showtime. I wonder how long those links will last…those networks are pretty quick about finding illegal linked episodes.

This seems to be a problem because it may have some issues with copywright laws. I think its a great idea from the viewer standpoint. It appears to be very convient to the consumer!

I always get frustrated when I go to watch a specific episode online because i missed it on t.v., and it is either poor quality, in another language, or not even listed. Let’s see if these guys can hold up to my standards!
