  • Join Freecycle and save the world!

Posted on February 10th, 2010 admin 34 comments

People from all walks of life have joined together to turn trash into treasure”.

So maybe Global Warming isn’t really a serious problem, but excess garbage and landfills still are.  Freecycle was established in 2003 by Deron Beal as a way to reduce waste and help prevent land from being used for landfills.  This website, similar to Craigslist, enables you to get and give stuff for free.  The rule is that everything posted “must be free, legal, and appropriate for all ages.”   Food fits in with that rule; say you buy a new box of cereal thinking you’re going to like it, but you don’t?  Post it on Freecycle and give it to someone else instead of tossing it out.  Really, someone else might want it!

Freecycle is now active in over 85 countries and has millions of members. keeping over 500 tons of garbage out of landfills every day.  “This amounts to five times the height of Mt. Everest in the past year alone, when stacked in garbage trucks”.

Freecycle doesn’t generate much revenue:  http://www.freecycle.org/about/funds They say they’re in it for the cause not the cash.  But, controversy and criticism often follow success. You decide. BbB

    1. Very interesting. I don’t know how much weight to give the info in the video, because they really didn’t validate anything they claimed, so I’ll stick to the Freecycle concept (oops, that’s an adjective). If there really are millions of members who are forming these networks, then the idea has legs and could really make an impact in reducing the amount of landfills worldwide. I personally think I’m going to stick to buying my cereal at the grocery, but for those who don’t care, more power to them.

    2. I think this is a very neat concept and a great idea. This site is helping people basically get ride of there “junk” that no one esle would want. I think this could really take off with more people finding out about it. Today in 2010 people are alwasy looking for new ways to preserve the Earth and with this it is a big help. I think this is a great cause and hope that more and more people will start using it!

The whole idea behind it is great and seems to be working for Freecycle. I watched the video and wonder if some of the stuff was true. They should have more evidence to back up some of their claims in it. It seems like a great way to make some cash and help out the environment.

    4. 85 countries, and millions of members. Well of course somewhere someone is going to be doing something the aren’t supposed to or that goes against what Freecycle states to stand for. Is this about a real issue and wanting to fix that issue or about expecting ideals and creating drama?

    5. I believe that freecycle is very disruptive. There is nothing else like it out there. It’s helping save the environment by keeping the cycle of exchanging unwanted things moving. One man’s trash is another man’s treasure!

I don’t know if I, personally, would use a site like this. I don’t like eating something that someone else has already opened. I think that’s just a disaster waiting to happen. If a big company can accidentally get pathogens that cause disease in their foods, imagine someone else just opening something up and putting their mix of pathogens then sending it out. I don’t really like this idea at all. I think there should be something else done to help clear out landfills or stop the piling up of garbage.

    7. This is a great idea. I dont know if I would try and get food from people who I dont know but the purpose of the whole business is really creative and very disruptive.

    8. I like this idea. It focuses on issues that many people need. I may not personally benefit from the product, but for the ones that do, this is a very good idea!!!

    9. I think this is something everyone should check out sometime or another. Who knows what people might post on there in order to keep from just throwing it out.

    10. sounds like a great idea, i would be curious as to how the shipping costs are distributed.

    11. Freecycle is a great idea and hopefully will become more popular. Its similar to criag’s list which is more popular but both are still new and upcoming. I think this company is disruptive and will have more success in the future.

    12. I like the concept of this project but it doesn’t seem to be very well done nor very well kept up. Also I tried to access the post in the Lafayette area but I was redirected to Yahoo group which I had to sign up for and get excepted to, right now I’m waiting for confirmation that I can join. All these steps seem very unnecessary, if this site was actually a little more like craigslist then I believe it has the potential to be very successful, but as is not many people are going to go through the effort to use it.

    13. I like the idea. They need to execute better, but if they clean up their operation, I think they can be very disruptive. Anytime something turns into a free thing, people will flock to it, no matter the economic climate.

The idea is great! Any idea that helps people and the environment we live in is a good idea.
I dont know if I would want that box of cereal but if others are into it, Im all for them.

    15. This is a really good idea. I know there are lots of things that I have that I don’t want to throw away, but also don’t want to take the time to sell. Even a lot of places that take donations are sometimes hard to reach. Taking advantage of the online network will be helpful.

I wonder how cluttered up it will become with stuff that really actually is just junk?

    16. Amazing idea, but I don’t like the execution. I looked at the groups in Lafayette, IN and I was redirected to yahoo groups. I know they are a little low on funds right now, but I think they should develop the technology to host the forums and discussion on their website. This will give them more depth in their venture.

    17. This site is a great idea. People are always throwing away perfectly good stuff that other people need badly or even just want. This is a great way to help people in need all while helping the environment.

    18. This is a great idea. It helps the environment, and also might be able to help people that can’t afford certain things.

I actually heard about this about a week ago on the Tyra Banks Show. They were promoting ways live cheaper/ save money and still get good quality items. someone needs to get rid of a car for me :)

    20. I like what he is trying to do. I wonder how well it really works though. A lot of the stuff bought on there probably ends up in a landfill eventually anyway.

Pretend you need a bike chain. You go to Freecycle and find no bike chains, but you can get a bike. It’s free so you get the whole bike so you can take the chain off. Would you put the bike back on the website? If so it’s going to sit in the garage or back yard until someone else wants it. Then you have to deal with shipping it. Or, are you going to take it out with the rest of the trash and be done with it? I’m guessing that most people would take the easier route. Good intentions, but I bet they would be surprised at how much they are really helping the environment.

    21. It is a very cool and interesting concept to give things away for free to help the amount of trash, but at the same time its still gunna be trash eventually. I think the whole giving away food thing is weird, I would never want food from someone random off the internet. This website could be very disruptive for people who love selling their used items and having garage sales and things like that.

This sounds like a great idea and a very disruptive model. People will have to use their own discretion on what they get for free. I for one would definitely not want someone’s bananas they decided not to eat after a week. On the other hand if someone wants to throw away a $400 snowboard with bindings, I wouldn’t mind taking it off their hands.

    23. One thing I have learned in life, everyone does everything for themselves. this is no different of a situation. They want to be that person that created the best trash avoiding network and be the heros of the world. in no way am I condemning them on their accomplishments, I think its awesome that they have the drive to do this. Funds are not the only way to service your human urges.

    24. It seems like a very disruptive business model. I don’t know how many are going to take the time to list a box of cereal on the website but other items may be more profitable.

    25. I love this idea! It’s a way of dumpster diving without even having to get dirty. My only question is how does the shipping work cause the products wouldn’t truly be free then. I think I’ll have to check out this site though!

    26. My grandma uses this and she has gotten quite a bit of stuff from it that she needed or that she wanted. It has also helped get rid of some of the stuff we had that still was in good shape and everything but we had no use for it. I have seen all sorts of things that people have to give away and that they need. It is actually a pretty cool thing and can save you money since you are getting the stuff free.

    27. Freecycle.com is a fantastic idea for countries all around the globe. Even in times of economic lows and recession there are still extremely wasteful people out there, that throw away food or other tangible items that another person or family may need desperately. Freecycle.com offers an alternative to throwing away things while doing some good in the world. It is a way of, killing two birds with one stone, so to speak; people are able to help someone in need by giving away their unused items while at the same time helping the environment by keeping garbage out of landfills. Why wouldn’t you use freecycle?!?!

    28. To me this is just a very interesting idea. I mean anyone can use this website and gets stuff for free. This is seriously just unbelievable. It’s amazing to see that the world today has come to something like this. You can have a half eaten box of cereal and just put it up on the internet for someone to take off of your hands. The only problem is people tampering with the food. But I’m sure if their is a report of such a thing that the user is immediately kicked off the website and faces legal charges. But still, this is just unbelievable and definitely plan on checking it out.

    29. I think this sounds like a great idea, a great way to get rid of things you no longer use/want. Plus, if you’re on the recieving side and it’s something you want, what’s better than free?! I agree with some of the previous comments about the food, though, I’m not sure I would go for that. I would be wiling to use the website to get other things though.

    30. This is a pretty sweet idea. I can’t believe it took this long for someone to think of this. Like someone commented before “one mans trash is another man’s treasure”. This is a great idea and I don’t know of anyone that would not support it.

    31. Blake Bronowicki

Freecycle seems to be a very effective way for people to recycle and put all their trash and make it into treasure. All it takes is getting the word out to people because alot of the time not many Americans care to do so. The natural thing to do is throw something away, but for other people such as for Freecycle, it means a lot. I like the idea that Freecycle is all for our community and doing better things for our environment.

    32. This is a very good and innovative idea for recycling. It gives those who do not want to, or dont have the resources to pay for recycling services. It is a great way to save the planet in an entrepreneurial way.

    33. It seems a good idea. If there are really so many people join in it, I think it can really help protect the environment. However, I am thinking how much I will spend in mailing if I want to tranfer to others. Who will pay the mailing fees. Like the cereal, it is not worth mailing and also it can not keep long time. Therefore, I think the idea has a district restriction.

    34. This seems like a great idea, I feel that the cost of shipping could cause a problem to this company. I have heard it said many times that one man’s junk is another man’s treasure. If they can get enough people to participate in this, I think it would be a great idea!
