  • iPhone Controlled Quadricopter: The Parrot AR.Drone

Posted on March 1st, 2010 admin 40 comments

Tomorrow I intend to survey readers of this blog about what they would really like to see in a smartphone app, both for their sojourn at Purdue University, and as entrepreneurs to make their lives easier. Since last week’s Burton D. Morgan Business Plan Competition had as one of the five undergrad finalists a unmanned drone [CFB Engineering], it is appropriate to consider such devices in this blog. Attribution: The idea for this blog entry was provided by a former ENTR200 student of mine, Josh Ringler – our thanks Josh! Let’s look into the Parrot AR.Drone more deeply.

So what about this “toy?” I suggest after reading about it you not ponder the device per se, , but what it represents. Things like Augmented Reality+video gaming, like lithium-ion polymer batteries (LiPo), things like embedded RISC-Linux computer, and how all of this might be extended to the “real world.” You can read more about it at the following links: CNET, their web site above, and on your own. BTW, Parrot is a large Paris-based publicly traded company. Hank

    1. I really like the Idea of Quadricopter controlled by an Iphone. However, I think that using this stuff in the streets is a little bit dangerous.

    2. Anthony Sikorski

This seems like a very cool idea to be able to control a quadricopter with your iPhone. It is amazing some of the apps that people are able to come up with. It seems if you want to create a good app you might want to think outside the box.

    3. This quadricopter seems like an awesome device. I am wondering what all of the uses for the device are, because it seems like it would be a great tool for security purposes.

    4. That is sick! I want an iPhone now just so I can fly one of those Quadricopters. That is really impressive.

    5. Colby Beacham

Theres been more and more of these type of applications popping up recently, in the future the iphone is going to extend past its own body and start becoming a part of everything around it. Theres already ways to use the iphone to control pretty much every aspect of your house, and your car, and with augmented reality there is a lot of possibilites.

    6. This product looks extremely cool and if it were affordable I would probably get one. I wonder how it would handle losing a signal once it gets too far away. I could see this product getting frustrating due to possible connection, disassociation, and other problems like that arising. Not to mention the fact that a wireless connection is always subject to hackers creating a connection to take control of the device. All that aside, I would still love to play around with this product.

This to me just seems like a toy for adults. Though it is cool and high tech, it doesn’t seem to serve any really purpose but for pure entertainment. But it does look as if it would be a lot of fun for all those nerdy guys.

    8. Justin de la Chi(cago)

I think perhaps the purpose is overlooked in the replies thus far. Entertainment, while a good industry to sell within, is fleeting. Militaristic, personal security, and criminal activites are far more profitable businesses to introduce this type of product.

Perhaps the more important issue is that of an onboard processor and WiFi compatibility that allows this digital control to exist. Australia’s government is seeking to have countrywide wireless established in the next few years. Yes, the entire continent with wireless! Means you can fly one of these copters across the whole country as long as the battery lasted. What’s more, companies are working on wireless charging so you can fuel up mid flight if setup beforehand.

Imagine the Planet Earth series with a navigable HD camera on a mobile unit that can get up close and personal to the wild critters! Such amazing possibility.

There appears to be no limit to what apps can do. I know there is already a remote car starter app available. I imagine smart phones are only going to continue to get more advanced and cover more grounds.

    10. This product is very creative! I do not believe that this product will actually make it to the shelves, but rather will serve as a great marketing tool for the company that makes it.

    11. Spencer Abrams

While military applications are a lot more profitable, this product doesn’t provide any advantages over current drones already in the field. The touch screen remote would not be as reliable as the ones currently in use, and I doubt the WiFi signal would reach too far in the middle of the desert in Afghanistan.

    12. Wow, that is so cool. This technology has so many uses its unbelievable.

    13. Amanda Edmondson

The idea of coming up with an iPhone application that can fly a Quadricopter is pretty genius. Technology keeps improving and surprising me almost every day. This is definitely a toy, but one that would most likely be for adults. I don’t know if a lot of people would actually use this. I think adolescents would really get a kick out of this, but I’m not sure a large population of them would own an iPhone. But, no matter what your opinion of the product, the technology is the most impressive aspect of it. I think we will be seeing more and more of this type of use of technology in the future.

    14. This is very impressive, I can’t wait to get my own

    15. That is sooo cool. The streaming video to your phone feature is awesome too. I would get in so much trouble with one of these.

    16. John Gorbandt

WOW. I want one now! This product seems very cool. It also has many purposes. I really like to on-board camera. Very cool!

    17. This looks really sweet. I would love to have a quadricopter. I would mess with people all the time if I had one and it would be so much fun. At the same time this kind of scares me to think that technology is getting so advanced and that any normal person can attain such advanced technology. What is stopping a technology savvy person from making this into a weapon of some sort? Or for using it to spy? I love all the new gadgets and cool things we have now days, but how much longer before we get ahead of ourselves? For this particular device I am probably blowing my concerns out of proportion though. This is definitely a cool product either way.

    18. Taylor Gelsosomo

This product seems like it would be cool for a while and then just get old. I think it is more for adults than adolescents, but I’m not sure how many adults would actually be interested in purchasing it.

    19. i would like to see an app for smart phones that allows people to search through current superstore databases by keyword to find and compare products and their prices and reveal in what aisles they are located. the item could then be added to an automated shopping list and used as a budgeting and navigation program. this list could then be sent to the grocery or superstore where the items on the list could be searched out and organized for the app user and readied for pickup.

    20. Aditya Chaudhari

This idea is really cool but surely dangerous because of the fact that anyone can do it. This could lead to serious accidents like car wrecks.

    21. this is a really ripe concept. I know many places phone service can get sketchy though; I wonder what the procedure is for lost connection or if the quadricopter can even recognize this.

    22. Seems like a really well planned out. The ability to be controlled from a phone is definitely a big advantage for it.f

    23. This seems really cool even though I would have no use for this. Even if I wouldn’t use this, it’s pretty crazy to think how far technology has actually come.

    24. This is a pretty cool idea. I do not have an iPhone so it does not affect me much, but I still think it would be cool to use. One of my questions would be how far does the wi-fi reach to fly it? The video made it seem like it had a far wi-fi, but I just wonder how far it really does reach. If I had an iPhone, I would definitely want one.

    25. Jaideep Singh

Wow…. is this guy from Purdue? Love the idea! Although I read somewhere (I think in mythbusters) that they had made a iphone app for controlling their car! How the app world has grown.

    26. This is just a really impressive feat of technology. You could maybe imagine the government having some kind of technology like this, but controlling a drone with your iPhone? That is really cool!

    27. Harsh Sanghvi

This device can be of great use like for controlling traffic, military purposes.
But using it by wifi would limit the range of the device.

    28. thats pretty cool, id like to see how much they cost and what options you could get for them…you could fly to the end of your driveway to see whos there or down the stairs to see who is at the door….neat idea

    29. Keegan Klauke

My GOD we just created the best defense and the best weapon ever known to man kind! Think of what Millions of these things can do! say good bye to foot patrol.

    30. This technique is so cool. I will be not interested to control a quardricoper by iphone. However, if the techique can be applied in other things such as cars, door of my house and etc, I think more people will be appealing to this technique.

    31. Austin Collins

This was pretty cool I would definitely buy one. But I cant imagine having hundreds of these things flying around zipping past your heads. Its cool to think that anything electronic could be able to be controlled by your phone.

    32. This post was awesome I love everything that my iphone is capable of doing and learning about it too.

    33. siiick! that could be a lot of fun to play with! it would be even cooler it it were smaller like the size of a fly or some other insect.

    34. Frank Hettlinger

Yet another thing I can use my iPhone to have some fun with. I wanted to do something like this for a senior design project. Looks like someone else figured it out first. Maybe I’ll just have to take it to the next level when I learn how to design apps myself.

    35. Soroosh Karamyar

hell yeah i want a helicopter i can control with my iPhone!!!! i would have it with me at all times. sweet idea.

    36. Blake Bronowicki

This seems like a very interesting application considering you can actually use your own iPhone to do it. I feel like software developers are going to keep working on tweaking this so it will be compatible with the iPhone to use. For little children, it could be very appealing, but I wonder what this will cost when it all is put into place. I also think it can be dangerous at the same time. People may find it funny to use it to control their Parrot AR drone to cause trouble or other activities that might be potentially harmful for others. It is really interesting though, I would like to hear more about it.

    37. Courtney M. Cronk

this thing is pretty sweet. is it hard to operate? because i have tried to fly a few toy helicopters before and they are kind of hard to get the hang of at first. (i flew a few into trees and such). i would hate for this to hit something i mean i am sure it is a lot more expensive (especially with all its gadgets) than a regular toy copter. It seems like it could definately be used for military or security purposes. how can i get one?!?!

    38. That is pretty absurd. It’s hard to write something new in these comments, because most of my thoughts on the topic have already been expressed. I wonder what sort of flight restrictions will be placed in public places with this sort of technology emerging. Now, before regulations are set is the time to really extort and enjoy the opportunity.

    39. Letteer Lewis

I can’t wait till the day comes when we all have one of these….In the words of Will Smith…”I have got to get me one of these!”

    40. The technology behind this is amazing. I think that this will have trouble selling. It looks like a great adult Remote control drone! I think that the future generation may have interest in these when they grow older!
