SoyTabs is a winner
Posted on March 22nd, 2010 38 commentsThe team I served as marketing faculty adviser won the 2010 Soy contest and are $20,000 richer as a result. Their web page (Wix of course) is here: Basically they developed a soy-based filler for pills, the stuff that carries the good chemicals for delivery in your body. More specifically, “the Soy Tabs team, which took first place, included Ryan Fox, a nuclear engineering major from Rising Sun, Ind.; Krista Eakins, a biological engineering and pharmaceutical sciences major from Connersville, Ind.; Danielle Carpenter, a biological engineering and pharmaceutical sciences major from Plainfield, Ind.; and Brittany Phillips from Monroe, Wis., who graduated with degrees in biological engineering and pharmaceutical sciences. Using soy, they created a substance known as an excipient that binds powdered drugs into pills. The soy allowed for a dry, roller compaction method of production, which eliminated a drying step.” Quote from here:
Here’s several internet articles about the competition provided by Danielle:

Soy Tabs seems like a very interesting and helpful idea for making certain types of drugs. Hopefully the team can get their idea spreading around the industry and it becomes huge. Congratulations on your team winning!

What a great concept! I’m sure pharmaceutical companies will be thrilled that these students have found a way to save money, considering how expensive it is to create and mass produce drugs.

This idea is perfect. I would have never thought of making the powder into a pill or using soy to do it. I hope they go far with this idea and congrats on winning.

Very cool. Health products are a great market to enter, as Americans are becoming more and more concerned with nutrition.

Amanda Edmondson March 22nd, 2010 at 12:53
This is such a good idea. I hope that this comes to market soon because it is perfect timing for it, especially in the United States. We are on a “green” and “healthy” trend that is sure to be around for awhile. Not only are people concerned with the environment, but also with what is going into their bodies. I see this being a big hit!

These soy competitions always turn out some cool new products. I’ve always heard of biodegradeable toilet paper to use while camping in the woods and things of that nature, but this product seems to be feasible for replacing goods used all the time currently on the market.

Awesome stuff. Lets see what they do with the money. I accomplished absolutely nothing over the spring break; except seeing Massachusetts.

What an awesome idea! I especially like this idea due to the fact that I live on a farm with a little over a thousand acres of soybeans. I hope this opportunity advances. Best of luck to the team!

They picked a great market to go into. Medicine has come a long way. People like these guys are still finding ways of making their products or pills better, safer, and healthier. Congratulations!

This is so inspiring to all young entrepreneurs and innovators out there. I wonder how no one has thought of this before. I’m interested to see if pharmaceutical companies will start using this technique.

Soy products are being integrated into different markets. For entrepreneurs this triggers an entire new industry using soy. Congrats to the team.

This really seems to be a great idea and I am anxious to find out how it does in the market. The medical field is a constantly growing field with a lot of money incorporated in it. Using Soy Tabs will be an effective form of using pills if everything works out well and it is marketed correctly. My mother is in the pharmaceutical field and it has taken a hit from the recession, but it is getting back to where it needs to be and I feel this great innovative idea will make it far.

Contgrats to Soy Tabs! This is a great way to get your company name out there and also your name out in the professional world. This will lead to them getting recognition and maybe job offers in larger successfull companies!

20,000 dollars richer…that must be nice. Stories like these make me wish that I was in a different major like bioengineering or pharmacy. How long did it take them to come up with this idea, and where did it stem from? How did they decide who they wanted in their group? congrats to the winning team
-
Byron Young March 23rd, 2010 at 23:14
Congratulations! This product is innovative! I think it’s cool how CS majors design new websites, Bioengineering design products such as these! For myself, being a management major my role in a company would be after a product is developed, the financial and marketing team.
I love seeing these ideas, and thinking of creative ways to market them!
-
Awesome. I’m glad to hear your still helping out the different teams.
-
Mahmood Alrawi March 24th, 2010 at 23:02
neat idea…to think that they almost gave up on this though, and to come back and win that much money, must feel really good!
