Kids With Tablets
Posted on March 23rd, 2010 48 commentsToday’s blog is the first from teams in my two ENTR200 classes at Purdue University. What do readers think? BTW, I have an iPad 16 on order for April 3 delivery, along with a VGA adapter for classroom use
HankPenguin’s vision
When the iPad was presented a few months back, the hype was within the realm of adult users and those with a bit of computer literacy. However, Penguin sees it differently. Penguin sees the potential in edutainment, “But the iPad is perfect for kids in a lot of ways–its larger screen is much easier for kids to manipulate than an iPhone or other smartphone, and the full-color screen and fast processor allow for bright, colorful apps with motion, which eBook readers like the Kindle can’t handle.” Check the video here and at bottom.
Some Stats for Apps
According to 148Apps.biz, approximately 40,000 Apps are categorized as Books or Education, which is over 25% of the total Apps in store. With an average price of $2.70 (including games), that is a total of $108,000. Let’s be conservative and say that of the 3Bn App downloads, 25% are paid. This means that 750,000,000 downloads, at $2.70 average price per App, this is a whole lotta money that is available to be made by an entrepreneurial soul.
Read a bit about App stats here and here. All that needs be said is $17.5 Billion by 2012!!!
A few perspectives on iPad and Education:
According to PBS.org, “Tablets will change education this year and in the future because they align neatly with the goals and purposes of education in a digital age.” Read an interesting blog post here. Additionally, a
marketer’s perspective supports the previous observations of the sweet spot in Education as a profitable market. Also supporting that perspective is this analysis.A Final thought on Target Market
Take the thought of Children as a potential for lucrative business, and instead change your perspective on the Boomers and elderly. This link does a great job at telling the elegance and beauty of making things simple. If you can see the possibilities, you are one step closer. – Justin de la Chi(cago)-

I have never thought of children as a target market for the iPad. Things this device can do seem unimaginable. However part of me still thinks its gonna be a flop and wont sell nearly as much as they are expecting. We will just have to wait and see…we know they have 1 sold already to Hank lol

I feel targeting a lower age of children for the iPad can be a great thing. If younger children seem to be want to play with things and this thing is very big and could provide a lot of entertainment for young children. There are so many apps to use on the iPad that it can be used just about for any age range and the possibilities are endless for Apple.

Children as a target for the iPad? Interesting plan. It could work. However, If I was a father, I would buy a 500 bucks device just for my children doing Coloring or whatever.

I think this is definitely a smart plan for Apple. I was always on the computer playing Reader Rabbit when I was 4-5 years old, and I truly believe I am better off for it. A lot of child advocates frown on having children sit in front of a TV for more than an hour or two, but I learned some of my greatest life lessons from Barney and Mr. Rogers.

I can definitely see the potential the ipad can have with children. I have a 6 year old sister who spends alot of time on my parents ipod, i’d probably never hear from her if she had access to the ipad.

the ipad will open up many oppurtunities for interactive software. the idea of using this to educate children is great. it would be nice to see some grade schools use funding to provide these for their students and allow them to stay on the cutting edge of technology and education.

Taylor Gelsosomo March 23rd, 2010 at 09:43
I think it definitely expands the market, but I don’t know how many parents would want to spend that much mo9ney on a “toy.” It could be beneficial, but it seems like the child would need supervision with it as opposed to if they just had a regular coloring book.

I think the iPad could be beneficial for young children. The applications that are oriented towards children, for reading and writing, would be better than having a child sit in front of a t.v. Also since our world is becoming technology oriented children should be familiar with computers sooner and this is one way of doing so. However, if I was a parent today and considering buying an iPad for a child, I think I would want to wait on buying a first generation one. I am just unsure on how stable and sturdy the iPad is for a child to be playing with.

The iPad seems to be a targeting its market well. I just hope the kids have enough money to purchase this expensive learning tool

I’m thinking about the toys/technology I had when I was younger and now to imagine this Ipad being targeted to kids is ridiculous. I feel like the games/educational activities that a child would use on the ipad could be utilized on a much cheaper and less advanced device.
-
I look forward to seeing the iPad used in class! I think that this makes a great deal of sense for children education. Especially in a world that is turning digital. Children enjoy using devices that resemble computers, phones, and other devices they see thier parents/siblings using. Children desire to copy thier parents and siblings. I think this is a expensive alternative though for child education! I never got a laptop till I was going into college. It seems the younger generation today will have laptops by the time they are in Middle School!

I could see a huge educator market that Apple can tap into. I believe that the way the current textbook and other paper sources for education will eventually become nearly non-existent. Especially when applications could be made that will would be fun, interactive, and educational. I would invest!

Why is everyone targeting the idea that children will be the end users? I am focusing here on the Apps as served to the Children. It can be a family device as stated with the final section of the elderly and Boomers.
The blog is about Penguin focusing their product mix for children, and using the iPad as a vehicle.
I see limitless potential here, and I am going to find a way to make money off it.

I think it is really creative and risky for them to target kids. I don’t think many people saw that coming. But, at the same time, I don’t think that I would spend $500 or so on a product that could easily be damaged just so my kid can color and do things like that. I just think it is worth too much money to take that chance.

I think targeting families by positioning the iPad as an educational tool is a great way for Apple appear ahead of their competition. Even if other companies, such as Microsoft’s iPad equivalent, is capable of running multi-touch educational apps, Apple can be ahead of the curve by advertising it first. Being a device that can meet the needs of many generations, I hope the iPad is a great success.
I’m excited to see Hank show it off in class. Maybe I won’t wait until the 2nd generation after all.

Children as a target market for the ipad? with this being said for the cost of $500 this product better be able to with stand getting ran over by a air plane
lol nah but seriously careless as kids are now days this product have to be durable. -
Jaideep Singh March 23rd, 2010 at 12:42
I’m excited to see the iPad in person when Hank brings it in class. iPad can be used in many areas; but the biggest problems I find is the steep price and fee for developing software for it.

I think targeting children is a great idea! It will help to start them off early with technology and it can be used as a great learning tool for education. I have neighbors with twins who are autistic and they learned much quicker using a computer and gaming systems than by books or tv. I think this could help all kids as it could have helped my neighbors.

The idea for using the iPad and its apps as a teaching tool for children is interesting an interesting and risky idea form my view. I don’t picture a lot of parents going out and buying their 5-12 year old an iPad. If a parent buys one it will be for them and some parents may not even let their children mess around with it. It will be interesting to see if they get a target market large enough for their apps to sell.

The potential of the iPad is astounding and I do agree that children will learn more with this new piece of technology. I can see this working great across the world in students of all ages.
Knowledge is power and as technology advances so does our knowledge. What apps help us learn and grow will be interesting to see. -
Molly Longest March 23rd, 2010 at 15:13
I think the idea of using the iPad as an educational tool sounds great at first but I’m not sure I’d put such an expensive tool into the hands of young children. I’m interested to see though if apple changes it’s marketing or comes out with commercials that do market towards children.
-
Harsh Sanghvi March 23rd, 2010 at 15:25
Interesting idea but $500 ipad for small kids doesn’t make a lot of sense when there are other electronic devices in the market for educational purposes at a lower price.
-
George Petrov March 23rd, 2010 at 15:42
I know if I bought an ipad for 500 dollars i would be careful letting my kids use it, haha. This is a good idea though. I am sure many people will use this app.

Once again, taking something simple and creating something incredible like this is amazing. Not only does this make room to utilize, but it gives young entrepreneurs like ourselves to engage and take advantage for future expansion.

Austin Collins March 23rd, 2010 at 16:01
The IPAD will be something that everybody can use in the family. Every kid loves to use new electronics and it will be a huge hit for everybody who like new things. Its just another toy for all of us.
-
Kyle Egbert March 23rd, 2010 at 16:18
I think the iPad has a great opportunity with a child market. I don’t think it is a good primary market, but a good secondary one if mom or dad has an iPad anyway. The touch experience is a great immersive way for kids to learn and I hope app developers realize what they are now about to do.
-
Andrew Huff March 23rd, 2010 at 16:22
The iPad is a great toy… a very expensive toy. I do not see the target market of the iPad being children given that the cheapest iPad is 500 dollars. Apple created a giant iPod Touch rather than creating a new an innovative product. Furthermore I am still not sure what the iPad is supposed to be used for. I’m not going to buy one to check my email… I have a laptop. I’m not going to buy one to read books… I have books. And I most certainly am not going to buy one as a electronic coloring book.
-
Martin Murray March 23rd, 2010 at 18:00
I agree that children are a great market to target. Both educational and fun apps can be made for children to enjoy. However, I don’t want my kids touching my iPad with their dirty sticky fingers. Kids break things easy too.
-
Casey Piquette March 23rd, 2010 at 18:06
Really interesting idea, but I am not sure that the iPad is durable enough for children. There are already electronic learning children’s companies out there who have some products like this. Also with schools facing budget cuts as it is, I don’t know how $500 iPads would fit on a schools budget. You never know, though!

For anyone who actually clicks through the links, here is another one for you.
The point here is perspective. Be open minded, read, think as possibility, not as an I would or wouldn’t….because someone else will!

Decent idea, but until the price of the iPad comes down, its still way too expensive for most schools.
-

I think the iPad could be a great educational tool. Prior to this blog, I did not even think about marketing this product to a younger audience mainly due to its relatively high cost. An application could be developed to help toddlers learn colors and shapes. There are a wide variety of applications that have the potential to be successful if the target market is expanded. Good blog topic!

While having a target market that is young children seems like a good idea, I dont think it is. Not many parents would pay for an iPad for there “little” kids to ply on them. It is an expensive piece of equipment, and I don’t agree that this is the best target market.
-
Krystal Anaya March 23rd, 2010 at 19:50
the ipad for children could be very beneficial, i think targeting the preteen would make apple the most profit because they are not the ones paying for it yet they have more say in what their parents buy.
-
Courtney M. Cronk March 23rd, 2010 at 20:17
I think its a good idea and that kids would enjoy it. But i dont know if i would want to spend the what, 400-600 dollars on a mini computer/ipod/itouch/iphone for a 2-6 year old that i could use as well. thats a lot of money and young kids are bound to have an accident of some sort where it could get broken. then again….many parents will spend a lot of money on other things/toys for their children so who knows. I suppose if i had the money i would do it too if helped with learning abilities.
-
John Gorbandt March 23rd, 2010 at 20:30
I think that this is a great idea. I like how they are trying to incorporate technology into the lives of younger children. Doing this makes the technology more marketable more than they already are.

Abhinandan De March 23rd, 2010 at 20:53
iPad is surely a revolutionary device. Though there is a group of people unsatisfied with some limitations on the iPad like inability of multi-tasking and video conferencing and stuff. While that could potentially make it a more well rounded business and personal use device, iPad in itself could be a huge hit for students and not just children.
I would love to have my books on the iPad instead of having to carry them around.
-
Cortez Smith March 23rd, 2010 at 21:29
iPad is one of the best creations invented in this era. All the information you need is all in this technology that you can carry around from time to time. Most people think it might be a hassle trying to learn it, but its worth its money.
-
Justin Riley March 23rd, 2010 at 22:18
I am not so sure how good the iPad will be. I will just have to see after it comes out and I get to try one out. It may be a great invention like some think but for right now I feel that it will not be that good of a product until they get newer versions out that have updates to them.
-
Meiqi Zhao March 23rd, 2010 at 22:42
Chirldren market is probably the easiest market to earn money. Children will be easily persuaded by ads and want to buy the product. And also parents will hardly avoid their children request.
I think ipad will be a great tool for children to use. It contains a lots of information and it is easily to be used.
However, I still prefer reading books instead of reading on the electric tool. I hope the way of educationing children will become more natural instead of more technical. -
Byron Young March 23rd, 2010 at 23:07
The children market is an easy market. Incorporating new interactive games within the touch screen, as well as music. The market for interactive learning activities will help younger children learn math, english and literature.
The Ipad will be able to expand into the computer games market, as well as the scholastic children’s market.
I agree completely!

It would be great to see a charter school purchase a couple hundred of these and produce a study over the next year about how it has effected learning and test scores.
-
Maria Del Real March 24th, 2010 at 12:21
Well, I think this is great. Kids are a great target market because they learn to adapt to technology so quickly. iPads could be incorporated into the classroom, much like Thinking Boards are used now. It would definitely keep younger students more engaged in the learning process. I can already imagine my little brother getting excited to go to school if there was some kind of learning time using iPads. Great!

Kids these days are spoiled, man what I would do if I had one of these things back in the day
-
Mahmood Alrawi March 24th, 2010 at 23:04
i dont think this should be implemented at all in schools or anywhere in education. Kids are becoming too technology dependent, not saying i am, but its not really a good thing to be dependent on these devices as a means of learning. maybe leisure time, but definitely not in schools.
-
Jeff Olen March 25th, 2010 at 22:17
I think that aiming the iPad towards a younger generation is a fantastic idea. This world is turning to technology savvy that it is ridiculous. I mean everything is turning into something electronic. So giving a younger child a light weight portable computer would be a great idea. I have a Macbook and it is so easy to use. Plus, iPad will have so many games and fun things to do for little kids that it will be a great way for the younger kids to get a solid knowledge on a very pretty piece of technology. And Hank, I’m looking forward to seeing the iPad in class. I’m probably just as excited as you are! haha
-
Arpit Bawa March 27th, 2010 at 18:52
I feel there is nothing wrong with targeting young customers. Many other businesses are already doing this. Young children offer a whole world of untapped potential. Anyways, research indicates that the younger generations are being born smarter than the previous ones. They are probably in a better position than anyone else to be initiated into new technologies.
-
Joseph Mecca March 29th, 2010 at 12:24
cool concept, still a scam for money. the ipad, unlike netbook is sleek and sexy to the consumer. It has a playful look to it, and it sells because of the physical appearance’s ability to create happy and joyful emotions simple based on rep and design rather than specs. Great purchase for upper class who’s looking to be “in” with the technology and have the newest apple product.
