  • The world needs a Droid to iPad tethering app

Posted on April 10th, 2010 admin 21 comments

But you say they are already “out there.” Not really. Let me expound a little.

When the 3G version of the iPad comes out later this month, it will cost an additional $130 plus either $20 or $30 a month fee to ATT for the 3G pipe. There are millions of people like me who own/would own both an iPad AND a Droid and  for many reasons shy away from ATT’s “great” broadband disservice. There is currently a free app in the Android market to tether a Droid to either Windoz  boxes or Macs via USB called PDANet. What the world needs is a Droid to iPad app that does not require root access on the Droid [which was just accomplished on 2.1 ]. Forget getting a similar app for the iPhone. Currently the iPhone doesn’t tether without jailbreaking, and even then you’re still on ATT, which in essence is going from bad to worse.

So here’s the deal boys and girls, without  rooting or jailbreaking [for the iphone], how can I use my Droid/iPhone to provide broadband access to my iPad? Barnacle from szym.net is a start but requires root access.  Why Droid you might ask? I’m already paying $30/month extra for unlimited bandwidth, and it’s on Verizon dude. Hank

    1. That sounds awesome. Hats off to the guy who developed the Barnacle WiFI Tether. At least you can tether even though it requires rooting. I wonder what Verizon has to say to this.

Just another reason for my boyfriend to want to switch from AT&T to Verizon.

    3. I’m caught between getting the iphone and the droid. My contract ends soon but I really don’t want to switch over to At&t hopefully apple finally announces iphone for verizon but if not droid tethering plus ipad wouldn’t be half bad. Heres for hoping.

    4. That would be a great idea to get an App to help with that. I dont have the expenses to get either a droid of an I-Phone. It would be a tough decision, but I would probably go with an I-Phone!

    5. I’ve heard rumors of Apple talking with Verizon about putting the iPhone on the Verizon network. Perhaps wait it out? I would like to see the Droid and iPhone on the Sprint network. Sprint recently announced a $69.99 that includes unlimited data, text, and voice (see here: http://anymobileanytime.sprint.com/?id9=SEM_Google_P_Freedom_Plan)

Apple is becoming like Microsoft so they will find every way to suck all of your money out of your wallet

    7. Hank, From what I know, there aren’t apps out there that can do this without rooting (which isn’t bad and too hard to do). Anyway, found an app called Proxoid which acts as a proxy server. http://code.google.com/p/proxoid/
Also… iPad is now jailbroken too!

Sounds like reasonable desires and questions. I can see the competitive race between AT&T and Verizon solving these problems.
If not I highly recommend just jail breaking your iPhone.

Verizon is supposed to get the iPhone in a year. In fact, I believe they are waiting until Verizon upgrades to 4G…which honestly their 3G is still better than AT&T’s.

    10. That’s something that would be really useful, I can see how verizon would profit from such a thing, but At&T would probably come out behind…

    11. I have been hoping for an app or some way to tether from my iPhone, because I don’t want to risk jail breaking it. This, and not being able to run multiple apps at a time are really my only complaints, which are not enough for me to make the switch to Verizon.

    12. As if AT&T won’t retort with the a launch if they see their profit margin decline. I’ll wait this one out and see what comes of it before I start switching services.

I have a Droid and cant wait to use this for my phone!

    14. From what I’ve seen in the android 2.1 framework this isn’t possible without rooting it. Hopefully Google realizes this opportunity and builds something in without compromising the managed software.

    15. Great questions, these are interesting because Verizon needs to be able to enter the Apple market. Whether that is through applications to the Ipad or bring the Iphone to the Verizon network, this company must enter the market because of the popularity of the Iphone.

    16. sounds like a good idea, im still not quite sure what the whole “jailbreaking” thing is, but something non-related i think the 30 bucks/month/400 bucks/year is a little much for a droid. id love to own one but not for that. i would imagine paying an extra 30 bucks a month for another “tethering” app for an ipad is not worth it. do you really need to lug around a full size ipad AND have full access internet?

The battle continues between the Droid and Apple. The two monsters are continually battling to prove dominance in the market place. If for some reason Google decided to join up with Apple, the world might come to a halt with technology.

    18. Great idea, AT&T and Verizon are going to have to jump on this if they hope to stay ahead of the competition

    19. I’ve heard that at&t’s contract with mac is up next year and rumor has it verizon is moving in. does anyone know if there is any validity to these rumors?

The Barnacle WIFI Tethering app is really cool; even though it requires rooting it is still better than nothing. Im sure something new and improved will be released soon enough that won’t reqire rooting and will satisfy Hank’s needs.
