EV-GP @ Purdue Sunday
Posted on April 15th, 2010 43 comments
This is personally the most satisfying blog I’ll write this semester. This coming Sunday at 1PM, the first of I’m sure many Electric Vehicle Grand Prixs will be conducted at Purdue University. Turns out, one of my current ENTR200 students Tony, is a participant, which makes it personal. We’re racing to win. How cool is that? I plan on attending with Brutti and a camera. Come out and give Brutti a hug and the participants a cheer. Here are some links [here, here and here] for more info about the event. See PR video below. Hank

This race is certainly going to shake things up. I believe all of the spectators will be incredibly surprised to see how far electric vehicles have come. The event is free to the public and there will be buses running from Rose-Ade to the track starting at 10:30.

Grand Prix is always a blast. I wonder how the electric vehicle(s) will perform.

I wonder if there will ever be a high efficiency diesel engine powering these little rockets. I went over to Merrick Labs with one of my engineering classes, and they are working on energy efficiency, a modified direct injection, and other pretty cool innovations in diesel as well. I bet as far as torque goes, the EVs are comparable to diesels.
Regardless of that, I wish I could make the journey back down here for Grand Prix. I wonder, is there any kind of national marketing for this at all? Think it could be a fun little gathering of schools for a competition if we could create an “invite only” opportunity for some of the elite engineering schools. Think about the publicity if this were to happen, and we won!

Sounds really cool that the first electric Grand Prix vechical will be used. Maybe electic will be the new thing for Grand Prix and the other carts with switch over. I guess time will tell, good luck in the race.

Andrew Burke April 15th, 2010 at 09:37
This will be my first Grand Prix so I’m pumped for it! Can’t wait to see how the electric carts run and what the whole thing is all about.

This is my first semester at Purdue and I am more than thrilled to experience Grand Prix Week. I think it will be a fun-filled week with plenty of excitement and the countdown begins…

While this is a cool idea, I’m happy they didn’t do away with the original Grand Prix event. The tradition of racing in this state is one that needs to be preserved. Racing has never been about being green, but rather being fast, and right now the electric cars are still slower than the gas guzzlers.

Ravi Mody April 15th, 2010 at 09:39
Good luck Tony. It’ll be cool too see the difference this year with electric cars.
-
Colby Beacham April 15th, 2010 at 09:42
I’ve been looking forward to this for a while, can’t wait to see what they’ve come up with. I’m hoping over the next few years I can take part in this event too. See you all out there.

Kelly Plantz April 15th, 2010 at 09:47
Its cool that the electric cars are only a few seconds off from the normal karts. Good Luck Tony!

I’m very excited to see how the evGrand Prix turns out. I am actually on a team for the actual grand prix next weekend. Im sure that the differences will be pretty extreme. But none the less a neat change of pace!

Go Boilers! Nice to see Tony participating in this; and hope Grand Prix goes national. I would definitely come and cheer.

Jacob Higbee April 15th, 2010 at 11:13
This should be just as exciting as the regular grand prix. from what ive heard, these electric carts should be just as fast as the regular ones. Should be a great event that really gets a new trend started in racing electric carts.

Brett Cohen April 15th, 2010 at 12:51
That’s really cool Tony is in the Grand Prix. I hope you do well!!
-
Damon Ward April 15th, 2010 at 12:57
This is a good step towards using energy more efficiently not only for Purdue, but for everyone. It will be interesting to see how these carts fare in comparison to the traditional carts.

Craig Hasbargen April 15th, 2010 at 12:59
I am excited for both races. I hope next year they will raise the maximum speed up a little higher than 35 mph though. It is pretty impressive that these little electric carts can go from 0-60 in around 5 seconds!! That proves that there is some potential for real world application.

Angeline Tran April 15th, 2010 at 14:26
I’ve never been to a Grand Prix event, but the PR video makes the event look really exciting. I should go to one before I graduate.
-
Andrew Barr April 15th, 2010 at 15:46
Good luck Tony. I know someone else who is involved in this and they seem really enthusiastic about it. The event looks really exciting. I can’t believe an electric cart can go so fast and have so much power.

I am very excited about the event. Electric cars are just what we need today. Even the government thinks so. Last year my parents received a tax credit for purchasing the Toyota Hybrid car Prius. Although it is not completely electric, it is still a great gas saver. I am curious to see what completely electric cars will do for our future and when they will available to ordinary folks.

Tony is in my group and it is awesome to hear some of the stuff that he tells me. I really hope that you do well buddy. I think it is great that Purdue is going green with the Grand Prix this year. They are always stressing to go green and now they are doing something huge to prove that they support it. Great Job!!

I’ve gatta admit it’s always been a childhood dream to build a go cart. I always make it a point to walk through Armstrong and look at the go-carts in the Epics lab.
As for electric cars… where is the energy to power the batteries coming from? You guessed it: unsustainable energy sources. Considering the carbon overhead to create the batteries and then the environmental harm the batteries cause when they are no longer usable I don’t think electric cars are very promising yet. I think it is progress but I do not think it is the answer… we still have a long way to go to be truly sustainable.

This should be really cool to watch. I was wondering what those T-shirts were for because they were giving them away for free to promote the race.

This is one thing I wish I couldn’t miss. I will be kicking my self all the way to louisville because I need to get my housing straitened away for the summer. damn this is an oportunity that no one should pass up if they are on campus.

John Gorbandt April 15th, 2010 at 19:02
this is really neat. I like what they are doing. Plus yesterday they gave me a free shirt outside of the union.

just what we need, another “global warming” solution. wonder if the pit stops will involve charging for a few hours. they could have an intermission! wouldnt that be exciting…”change in the right direction” yea. ok

By far one of the best things I did while at Purdue was compete on one of the Grand Prix teams. I’m looking forward to seeing how the new EV race goes. Hopefully I’ll make it back for a race one of these years. Good to see that Hank is still all about the racing!
-
Harsh Sanghvi April 16th, 2010 at 16:15
I am one of the EV teams too. Its going to be awesome and hope a lot of people show up. Its going to be a first time experience so I am excited.

I really wish I could attend this! I think it would be really cool to see an electric car race…especially one put together by Purdue student. It would also be cool to meet the guest of honor Brutti as well!

Byron Young April 19th, 2010 at 12:59
The race was pretty cool! I wish I could build a car, but that’s not my gift! I’ll stay in management!

First of all good luck to Tony, it will be interesting to see how the Grand Prix goes this year with the electric race cars. It is truly incredible to see what some of my fellow classmates can come up with.

Went to the evGrand Prix on Sunday..probably would have been more entertaining without the 35 mph speed limit. But considering it was free..who’s complaining?
