ENTR200 and Prezis
Posted on April 19th, 2010 51 commentsThroughout this semester students have had a requirement to use Prezi.com for at least one of their major ENTR200 class presentations. There have been some great ones and many students suggest they have embraced the Prezi concept and used Prezi to an advantage in other classes. Competitive advantage works in class as well as in real life, don’t you know.
However, not everyone embraced Prezi with open arms which is OK too. One of the last “holdouts,” Collen C., authored the Prezi embedded below for support of her team’s presentation on the success case Pixar. [For readers not familiar with Prezi, click on the -> button at center bottom, then on bottom right corner click "more" then Full Screen] Her Prezi merits inclusion in this blog for several reasons: 1. Note the framing used for the Prezi – film – which is what Pixar is about. 2. Note the use of Pixar-related graphics to support the presentation which are colorful and eye-catching. 3. Note the use of management concepts – differentiation strategy to frame part of the analysis. 4. In general, good use of Prezi to SUPPORT their analysis. Makes me proud, as well as all the other great Prezis during the semester. Hank

Colleen always spends the extra time to make the Prezi’s eye catching. Just using Prezi in general catches most people’s attention because everyone is so inbred with PowerPoint. Students have been taught and required to use PowerPoint since grade school but Prezi has many of the same features so why not break the mold?

Prezi really does make a better presentation than powerpoint does. It’s just so much of a different format than powerpoint it’s hard to even say they’re in the same category of software. The Pixar prezi only shows how much a presentation can really stand out. Well Done

I agree. Prezi is different and stand outs. I used it in my other classes and the teacher was really impressed. It takes presentations to the next level.

Its just to bad many of my other classes force their students to use powerpoint. It would be nice to use Prezi more often but I’m usually stuck using powerpoint

Prezi is a very good alternative to use instead of PowerPoint. There are some things that I don’t like about it but overall it can really add something to a presentation.

I am not very good at all at using prezi, someone else in our group is good at them and she makes them. But it looks easy to learn and im sure if i sat down and figured it out i could know how. I love the way it looks and think it is better than powerpoint

I really like Prezi. I think it gives a nice, professional touch to the presentation. I am using it form my projects in other classes also. My mom has decided to convert all her lecture PPTs to Prezi as part of her summer things-to-do.

Prezi is an entrepreneur’s powerpoint. It creates eye catching effects that draw it’s views in. The prezi presentation allows users to focus in on certain concepts, keywords and pictures witht he unquie zoom effect.
However, I believe that powerpoint is a more professional, and simple presentation that can be made into a great presentation.
It all comes down to your viewers. Are they “old school”, or “new school”? Will they appreciate special effects or do they like traditional presentation. That should be the deciding factor between the two!

At first I hated Prezi, now I can actually see that it does give a presentation an advantage. Especially to audiences that have never seen it before.

Im a huge fan to Prezi because it has its special perks that power point does not. Is easily holds the attention of the audience because of the cool graphics.

Every time I use Prezi I seem to amaze someone or convert someone from using PowerPoint. I now use Prezi for all my presentations because it gives an added edge over others.

Prezi is an amazing presentation tool. I wish i would have known about it sooner. I could have really helped during high school.

Damon Ward April 19th, 2010 at 13:36
Prezi definitely gives the presenter an advantage. It stands out from the boring old power point animations and transitions that everyone is used to seeing.

Prezi is way better than PowerPoint. PowerPoint is based on boring Templates that contain a persentation. With Prezi the presenter is free to express themselves and the presentation itself is more alive and conveys the message with creativity.

I agree that Prezi really does enhance these presentations. The only thing that bothers me is how limited the free trial is. I would love to see the other formats in Prezi and all that they can do. I will definitely remember Prezi when I have to make presentations for another class. It really is not very difficult to use and it makes a huge difference.

I like Prezi. It is a breath of fresh air from the boring power point presentations. It creates eye catching organized presentations that keep the audiences attention without distracting them to much from your presentation. I will definitely be using it in the future.

I m using Prezi in one of my ME class and I can assure you that it makes the difference. My professor love it and the other groups are sooooo jealous lol

At first I hated using Prezi, but after doing several of them I actually prefer it over powerpoint. I got an A on a presentation in my OLS class and I think it was because I used Prezi. Prezi makes presentations a whole lot more exciting because it is so unique and eye catching.

I will say that i will definitely use prezi in the future for some business presentations. its a great tool that will impress anyone, mainly because its cool and not many people have heard about it. its better than powerpoint i think…takes some getting used to but still better
-
Matt Kompara April 19th, 2010 at 16:59
the free trial does have some limitations, but powerpoint isn’t exactly free either! and other than that, who is the competition?

As Prezi is a significant delineation from PowerPoint or most other presentation software out there, there are a few shortcomings.
One exists in the uploading of all media, and the other limiting text colors and fonts. Additionally, drag and drop would be a huge upgrade. This being said, there are workarounds to these, that usually require a bit of image modification.
I do prefer Prezi as a presentation option over PP, however. Not just because I despise the lack of usability of Microsoft products, but because Prezi is functionally spaceless. With unlimited range of depth, focus, and rotation, I believe the viewer is taken on a journey from intro to conclusion, and not just talked at.
I am all for making this a more widely adapted format.

Prezi does seem not as user friendly as Powerpoint but is definitely worth the extra time to figure out. It comes off as much more professional while also exciting your audience.

Justin Riley April 19th, 2010 at 18:34
I do not mind Prezi that much, but I do not know how much I will use it after this class. I am so use to PowerPoint that I will probably stick with that. Prezi is ok, but I did not like it all that well.

Before ENTR 200, I was unaware of Prezi. Throughout the class, we used and learned how to create a good Prezi presentation. Using Prezi allows students to create a presentation that is different then the traditional powerpoint presentation. It is new and innovative.

i like prezi…it got me a raise.

Cortez Smith April 19th, 2010 at 19:23
I never have used Prezi, by the looks of it it seems to be more entertaining than the regular powerpoint. It seems to be complicated but I wouldn’t mind learning how to use it.
-
Aditya Chaudhari April 19th, 2010 at 19:27
Prezi is harder to use and more complex, but if you know how to use it and get the hang of it, then it is better and more attractive than powerpoint. However, powerpoint has been the main tool used so it is still more user friendly and more global.

I am honored to be featured in this blog. And I will officially say: I was wrong.
I held out on prezi for its lack of word editing, picture quality, and smart art that powerpoint provides. It didn’t take too long to realize the power of differientiation that prezi provides. I have introduced prezi to several classmates and they are blown away by how cool a prezi presentation looks. Prezi allows more freedom than powerpoint. It immediately impresses audiences who are so accustom to the typical powerpoint presentation. Learning prezi has encouraged me to investigate other presentation tools, as I now know the affect using different medias can have on an audience.
Today I gave my final presentation in OBHR 330 using a prezi I worked on for weeks. The prezi gave my group an instant edge and set us apart from the regular power point presentation. I know the audience was thinking “what the hell is this?” Which I consider a great reaction.
Thank you Hank!!

I like Prezi because it is really eye-catching and make presentations more intereting. Though it seems more difficult than powerpoint, I believe practice makes perfect. I also think Prezi will be the trend in the future. Try something new and life will be full of exciting.

Kamran Malhance April 19th, 2010 at 20:39
I have also used prezi in several of my classes I enjoy using it. It is very easy to use and flashy. The best part about it is no one else really uses it.

I think that Prezi is really nice looking a more appealing than PowerPoint. I think if you sit down a learn it, that it is just as easy as PowerPoint and possibly easier. I think that Prezi and other free software like it could spread throughout the world, especially in lower income countries. I think it is a great idea and hope it is successful.

Mahmood Alrawi April 19th, 2010 at 20:47
this is an amazing way to stand out from the “crowd” when doing a presentation. Prezi gives you the edge where even if your topic is boring, you can make it eye catching by the way u display it. definitely using this again.
-
Jaideep Singh April 19th, 2010 at 21:35
Prezi is useful only as the user wanted it to be. There are many many more programs like Keynote, Google Presenter etc that will do the same thing. All depends on how is it used. Pixar and DreamWorks both use animation, but Pixar has better “presentation”

Prezi is a lot better then Microsoft PowerPoint but I can’t figure out how to use it. I’m a pc.
-
Jessica Gilson April 19th, 2010 at 23:54
I have never used Prezi mostly because I’m a Microsoft fan. Its safe and I know how to use it. I spent time learning the 2007 version and to spend time learning to use Prezi would be an inefficient use of my time. Bad excuse, I know, but its the truth.
-
Harsh Sanghvi April 20th, 2010 at 00:50
I think prezi is really cool. I am going to be using them in the future for sure for the simple reason its eye-catching and different from powerpoint.

it’s good if you have time to make it good. It’s horrible when there is a time crunch from what I have experienced.

I must agree that after being presented towards the beginning of this course, I did not know how much more effective Prezi would be. However, I have also used it in other classes and the reaction is much stronger than most powerpoints. It is something that if I have the time, I will utilize it when I can.

Before ENTR200, I had never heard of prezi before. Now I use it for almost every presentation I give so that mine stands out from others. Using Prezi really offers a competitive edge against not only other students, but in the business world as well. Im currently using it for a group presentation in communications.

Since Colleen defected from the Prezi-haters group, I guess that leaves me as the last man standing. I admit that it does add some flair to certain presentations, but in the business world, most managers want no part of the flair. All they want is cold hard facts, how your presentation is going to affect their bottom line, and elaborate transitions make them question the substance of the presentation. The time spent creating smooth movements from slide to slide should have been spent doing something profitable for the company.

Andrew Burke April 20th, 2010 at 10:03
It was a very impressive presentation! Makes me proud as a fellow Krannert student. The look and flow of prezi certainly makes it an effective tool to stand out from the competition and to show off your “sizzle”, as Hank would say. Way to show off your sizzle Colleen, and thank you Hank for showing us this great application.

I had not heard of prezi before this class. ENTR 200 has really opened my eyes to all the alternative presentation programs out there beyond powerpoint

Even if Prezi is not the most efficient sometimes, it is important to remain open minded and try new things. The basic form of Prezi doesn’t seem like it would allow for all that cool animation, but in the Pixar Prezi, they used lots of unique graphics. It was very well done and would make Prezi proud!

I have to admit that Prezi did not seem like the answer to PowerPoint. Eventually, I saw huge differences in the two. Prezi just makes PowerPoint look old and out-of-date. Prezi is much cleaner and more tech-savvy than any other slide show tool I have used. Thanks Hank for forcing some change from the normal and finding something that can give us an edge on others.

I really do enjoy using Prezi. I have used it in other classes as well. I mean it is a little difficult to get used to, and if you ask me, it also takes a lot more time. This is because it is a lot more creative that just a normal powerpoint. For a professional setting I would probably never use Prezi, but for a class setting I think that it is awesome. I do plan on using Prezi in the future to impress some teachers and classmates, but I do not see it going any farther than that.

I’m so happy I was introduced to Prezi. I used it in another class and they were WOW’ed! It’s simple to use and so much more interesting than PowerPoint.
At first I was really hesitant to use it, but once I started playing around with it, it became so EASY!! -
Curtis Brackett April 21st, 2010 at 20:10
Prezi is an extremely powerful presentation tool. It is really eye-catching to professors as well as fellow classmates when you bring up a Prezi presentation packed with cool graphics and features that simple PowerPoint’s do not have. Having used Prezi I will say that it does take a while to get used to but the payoff is well worth it. I would make one recommendation to the founders of Prezi and that is—add as spell check feature.

Personally, I think Prezi is a great way to utilize putting together presentations, it is just a lot more complex and in-depth than the use of Microsoft Powerpoint. For me, If I am putting together a presentation I think to use Powerpoint because I have used it since the beginning, but if I got better adapted to using Prezi, I think I would think to use it more often.

Letteer Lewis April 22nd, 2010 at 23:23
Once you figure out how to use Prezi, it’s a great tool for capturing the audience’s attention.

Really good! “I” have used prezi in this class and for another class, however both times someone else set it up. I have listened to and tried out the prezi just to practice but realized it took more time to learn than i had anticipated. However: that presentation is AWESOME. I plan on learning more about prezi and how to use it for future presentations because professors are always impressed. I want all my future ones to turn out this good! i really liked it. good job!

I have done a lot of the Prezi work for our group presentations and I have to say I do like it. I never used Prezi before this class and after about 10 minutes of messing around with it I had it down. I am still more knowledgeable with Powerpoint, but I am definitely more willing to use Prezi for a visual aid.
