Kiva.org – BbB
Posted on April 20th, 2010 39 commentsAlejandro is 55. He lives in Peru. “He is an honest and hardworking man who is married to Alberta, 54. Together they have 3 children, of whom only one still lives with them in their own house: a house constructed of rustic materials. For more than 25 years, he has worked with citrus fruit, bananas and avocados. On top of that he has a business of supplying native fruit from the Peruvian jungle. In harvest times, he has the help of his dear wife and of his oldest son. This way he can give a comfortable life to his family.”
Alejandro, along with many other entrepreneurs from impoverished nations, is requesting a loan on Kiva.org. He has requested $1075 to help him buy more hectares of land so that he may plant more crops and purchase fertilizer and insecticides “to avoid the infestations that eat his fruit.”
So far Alejandro has been able to raise $975 from lenders like Brandon [left] from Rhode Island who loans “because I can” and from the Shlottmans [right]
who give because they “believe in sharing and helping to ensure that everyone has the opportunity to succeed as they work toward a sustainable livelihood”. With the help of many generous souls who loan as little as $25 a piece, Alejandro has only $100 left to raise before he reaches his goal and is able to make his dreams come true. For more stories like Alejandro’s check out Kiva.org; a social enterprise with a mission to alleviate poverty. See video [no audio] below. Beth Carroll{Hank note: Earlier this month my 10:30 ENTR200 class Team 5 made their last 5-minute presentation on Kiva.org also. Good stuff!}

This reminds me of any entrepreneur who needs start up money to boost him/her future career. Very inspiring and agree that donating and helping others out is part of the class.

I think services such as Kiva.org are fantastic. I feel that education and entrepreneurship are two of the most important elements that will help impoverished nations. Services such as Kiva.org allow entrepreneurs the opportunity to get the financial resources necessary to start or expand their businesses.

I see a potential extra credit opportunity?? A point for every dollar we donate?? JOKING! I completely agree with Andrew, Kiva.org is a wonderful sight and I feel it is our responsibility to help others if we are able to do so. Something as small as a few bucks from us can mean the world to people like Alejando.

“A social enterprise with a mission to alleviate poverty”, sounds like the path to Utopia. In today’s world the gap between the ‘haves’ and the ‘have-nots’ is widening and if something is not done about this the problem will escalate with all its associated issues. Kiva.org is a great idea that will allow even students like us to help those who have greater needs.

This is a really neat story. It is awsome to see stories like this were people come from everywhere to help out someone in need. I hope he is able to raise this last $100 and that he can be very successful in the future. This just goes to show that if you really strive to make what you want work then you can do anything! Good Luck!

This is really inspiring that someone who comes from a place that isn’t well industrialized can figure out a way to be an entrepreneur to help his family. This is a great story and I love that people from all over can donate and help this man.

This is a great heart warming story. People like Brandon and the Shlottmans are trying to make this world a better place for us. It was very smart for Alejandro to try to get help from more fortunate countries like us. He knows that there are people like these three who are always willing to help hardworking families who are just trying to grow their own food.

Kiva is a great company. I love the way they try to get people out of poverty instead of just buying these people what they need they give them a way to help themselves that helps them for years and years as well as helping the community and its future generations, good stuff.

I love the fact that people are willing to give generously to those who really need it without incentive. It is people like that that make our world a better place.

Just like everyone else said, this is a wonderful idea. If inspired to start your own business or implement ideas to the world, why not do so in a way that will help others?

It is amazing how a small amount like $25 can be a huge amount for someone else and change their life. There is a chance of you even getting the money back and then you can lend it ti someone else who needs it. Lastly it also promotes entrepreneurship amongst the poor.

This is an awesome company! I love this idea, when I’m older and working and actually have money to donate I will. I am also sure that you could also use it as a tax write off.

It is always good to see companies like kiva doing something positive for the world. A lot of companies don’t give back. Kiva’s goal is to help others and that is awesome!

It seems this business is definitely generating some interest in the financial community, with $100M already having been loaned out as of six months ago. After hearing of all the corporate scandals that get publicized in the media, it’s good to hear about companies such as these who are doing their share to help others.

I think that this is awesome. Giving “because I can” loans is a great way for people in other countries to become more prosperous and for them to be able to provide more good and services for the people of there country who may be less fortunate.

Kiva sounds like a great way to help someone expand their business. It is always nice to hear about a company that helps others. Hopefully, someday I will be able to help someone using Kiva, after I’ve set my own career.

I really like this idea compared to others in regards to helping out impoverished nations. Other programs are all about giving money, giving food, supplies etc. But how does any of that actually help the struggling nation get back on its feet. Kiva helps these people by giving them something to work towards. Just giving them money or food won’t help them progress but by giving them loans and letting them use them to create a sustainable company will help them for much much longer.

This org is really great!
It gives people in disadvantaged communities the opportunity for an even playing field. Many people who the the resources do not even know where to begin. With opportunities such as this, innovation is welcomed.

This is an amazing site! It is awesome to see that there are people out there that are actually willing to help others that are less fortunate with money out! There are a lot of people that say they want to help or would like to, but many do not really want to go through with it so it is nice to see people actually going through with it! I hope he can get his $100 soon or maybe even a little more so he can get even a little extra money he was not expecting! I love this website a very great idea!

Kiva is helping people and businesses throughout the world; through a simple process of lending money. This is a true social initiative that helps everyone. There should be thousands of Kivas more.

Its good to know that the money he is making he is giving right back. He knows what it is like to struggle and he is giving back to the community which is a good thing to put to action. It is good that we have a website that does this and im expectionally proud of the founder of this business.

Kiva.org is a great website and tool for entrepreneurs in impoverished countries to get their story out there to the world and hopefully receive some funding to help get their dreams started. It is refreshing to see people like Brandon and the Shlottmans lending money for no other reason than they can and it is the right thing to do. We need more people like this in our world today.

I’m personally really interested in this blog since donating to Kiva has been a part of my family since I can remember. My Aunt would always take part of our Christmas gift money and tell us to donate to someone using Kiva. I actually recently gave a speech about Kiva and the benefits of Microloaning, so great timing with the blog! I really enjoyed this one a lot!

The story of Alejandro is very interesting as he is making his dream come true even though he doesn’t have the money for it. He is trying and working really hard for it. That’s what entrepreneurs need to do, always work hard and never quit.

Kiva is really a great concept for us simply because the US dollar gets exchanged for so much more in 2nd and 3rd world countries. It doesn’t take very much investment to really make a difference over there.

Kiva.org is a great idea and a great educational tool for entrepreneurship. Even a small business that Alejandro runs, he is able to provide a comfortable living for his family.
It is great that they are choosing to help a hardworking man who deserves it!

When our team decided to look into this company (Thanks Casey!), It was such a neat experience to perform research on this company. It is so great to hear about a positive impact that a company can have on the future of other third world individuals. It is a unique service that is enlightening to hear about all of the testimonials

This is a really great company that is making a difference in the world. I think the world could use a few more people and companies like these, especially looking at our nation’s society lately.

I first heard about micro finance at AIESEC Purdue when one of my friends from AIESEC at Georgia Tech went to Kenya for a developmental internship working at an NGO that was supported by micro finance. I became really interested in the idea and found Kiva.org about 2 years ago. In AIESEC, we purchased a Kiva “gift card” for our President in Christmas 2008 as a gift in which she could choose an entrepreneur to sponsor.
I think that it is a great program, and I think micro finance is a really great way to help solve the poverty problem.

This is definitely an investment you can feel good about. It’s always great to help out those in the developing world if you can afford to. And especially with this, there is an added incentive because it’s going to a fellow entrepreneur. This is an excellent idea.
