Put on your high heel sneakers; Crocs that is
Posted on April 22nd, 2010 38 commentsWay back in a time enjoyed by few readers of this blog, a R&B singer named Tommy Tucker made a recording [embedded at bottom] named “Hi Heel Sneakers” {1964}. Seems that Crocs has brought back an oldie but goodie “hi-heel sneaker’ in their newest attempt to regain past glory. But first, some background.
As you can easily ascertain from Crocs’ financial performance above, their stock price has receded from a 5-year high of $69.98 on Oct 26, 2007 to in the $8 range today. How the mighty have fallen. In an attempt to
reposition and re-purpose their brand, they are rolling out a new line of red high heels, a new “Feel the love” advertising campaign, and new clog-like mascots named
“Croslite” to articulate comfort. Remember, this is a company that was first to market with a line of quirky clogs that were embraced especially by the medical profession before being knockoff by numerous look-alikes. And by-the-way, their new line is predominately made of leather and the shoes at the right retail for $99.99+
So here we have a company moving completely out of their previous successful market niche, to what end? Your input? Hank

99 dollars for Crocs? Sounds like they are definitely upgrading the quality of their shoes. It’s doesn’t seem fair that so many companies can make shoes that look exactly like Crocs and sell them at stores like Walmart. It looks like Crocs is trying to make fancier shoes and draw in a new crowd

I think Crocs has to try something in a different market, obviously their traditional rubber shoes aren’t going anywhere.

Crocs are definitely transitioning a different market. The overall process is smart, because any company especially in the “shoe business” cannot become comfortable in just producing the same products over time.
However, I do not know if “high heel sneakers” is the way to go. I think it will either be a big success or big failure, no grey area. Finally, they do not want to get away from there core values and it seems they are reaching outside of them!

Wow, wow, wow. This is very interesting! I personally think crocs are ugly and I would never wear them anywhere except a garden. But, the new heels are cute! The price point is perfect and they could sell at stores like Macy’s. I think people are really going to respond or nothing at all. However, I do think trying something new was a great idea-especially because the shoe business is so competitive and you’ve got to keep up to survive.

Personally, I never cared for Crocs and nothing they ever released for the public ever appealed to me. The clogs I thought were not a good look and hopefully they get out to the right market with these heels. I’m not sure if Crocs is trying to take on a more luxurious look but I am interested to see what happens. The shoe business is a very competitive market and it really requires the best of the best to make it.

Hopefully this new design can bring Crocs back from the grave and restore them to their former glory

I never owned a pair myself, but I find it interesting that they are completely throwing in the towel and repositioning in another market. I think associate the brand with the holey shoes that they are going to have a hard time establishing themselves in a more fashion-conscious market.

I’m unsure what to think aboutthis new idea from crocs. I think though that crocs had no choice but to change their strategy because of all the other croc look alikes.

Personally, I do not like crocs at all. I think they are so ugly and I would never wear them. Now to make them “more feminie” and turn them into a high heel is a terrible idea. I think they should only be worn while working in the dirt (like a garden). That’s all.

Interesting… i was never a fan of crocs, but it will be exiting to see how it works out for them

I never really liked Crocs, I actually kinda despised them while they were popular, but I can see where they are coming from here. Most company’s have introduced cheap knockoffs of the former Crocs meaning Crocs shoes are not very differentiated from the competition this new product seems to be their attempt to become differentiated again. I guess we’ll see how this turns out.

I have a feeling the crock trend has died and burned, I am actually quite glad personally. I first saw them at swim meets which makes sense, then I saw them in public, then I saw whole families wear them togeather. It really took society down a notch. Have you seen idiocracy? Everyone wears crocs and they are the “stupid culture”. I think it would be benificial for them to sell there company.

I have hated Crocs from day one. That being said, their rise to popularity has really flabbergasted me. They have always reminded me of the “As Seen on TV” items, or the Home Shopping Network crap that has sold over 1 million to who the heck knows whom else.
I believe their attempt to move into a more upscale segment is ill-founded, and destined to fail. Rather than reinventing their active and captured target market, they are chasing a market that mostly has discriminating taste.
I see a Failure case coming along for ENTR200 of the future.

They need to do something different because they really aren’t what they used to be. I don’t know if this is really the answer but we will see if it works.

I agree with some of the comments above, $99 for Crocs?? That seems pretty expensive but redesigning their shoes was definitely a step to redemption. Their old designs weren’t exactly the most attractive shoes.

I am personally not a fan of Crocs. And I dont think I ever will be. Being a girl that is into fashion and has some sense when it comes to whats in this season and what isn’t, I don’t ever think Crocs will be part of it. I have heard that they are extremely comfortable, but I have always been told “Beauty is pain” meaning that not everything that is in season is going to be comfortable. I think Croc was a flock kind of thing. They are cute and convenient for little kids though.

I’ve never really been a fan of crocs. I guess it’s good that they are trying to redesign their product, but it will probably be hit or miss. Surely they’re comfortable, but I don’t see myself ever investing in any.

I agree Im not a fan either. I don’t see the appeal. Thats probably why they lost money

I was never a fan of Crocs. I thought they looked dumb and ugly. What were they even made out of? Rubber? I believe that this is just going to be another bust.

There was a time when crocs were THE footwear. They were the Levis of shoes. But I guess overexposure made them generic and boring. Hopefully we’ll see a revival soon.

No. This is just wrong. I would no sooner by a ballgown from John Deere than I would purchase these. This is just wrong. Come on Crocs! Do they have ANY idea what their brand stands for? They are moving into the entirely wrong market. Idiots.

I have personally never owned a single pair of crocs but this design doesn’t look so bad. This design looks like it might be popular in the market soon.

Crocs are the perfect example of fashion at its worst. Although i hear they are comfortable. But ill never find out!

I think it is a very adventurous thing that Crocs is trying to do…but I think they are just setting themselves up for a very small market. Personally, I am not a fan of them at all, and I don’t think Crocs heels will help my case. The brand, name, and marketing screams comfort and family, I don’t think it will fit very well into the fashion world.

I’m not convinced this is going to work. I mean, this is from a guy’s point of view. But usually you associate crocs with comfort, not fashion, and I’m not sure that’s a reputation that’s going to go away. So I honestly predicting these things being a big flop. But you never really know with crocs; they could very well take off!

OooO stylish. Those will look great with my crotch-rocket…NOT.

I am not familar with Croc. It seems most consumers are not satisfied with its design and think their shoes to be ugly. When Croc enters into this situation, the company came up with new idea to promote their product. I think they need to do some surveys and see if the target market they change is right.

I’ve often wondered what Croc was doing to keep their company alive. It seemed to me as if they weren’t releasing any new products. I’m not sure how well these new shoes will do but hopefully it will at least get people talking.

I think the company is headed in the right direction. Judging from their stock debacle it is obvious that their earlier product is no longer enough. High heeled shoes, no matter what the price, will never go out of fashion so at least in that respect the company is being smart. As for how successful this new product will be, that will depend on the quality of the shoes and the effectiveness of the ads.

I like the old school, chill song. The Croc company knows what they are doing. They produce a good product and roll with it. This new idea seems interesting as well. Although I feel like I must say that I have never had crocs of my own.

Courtney M. Cronk April 23rd, 2010 at 19:49
not the most attractive…but crocs are known for that i guess. comfort and appealing to the eye are where it is at! as well as affordable, but people are often willing to pay for fashion. Maybe a pair of more attractive shoes would help the stock, because i would not buy any of their products that i am aware of..

Generic Crocs being sold at WalMarts and Targets just killed them. Maybe if they would have priced their original model shoe more reasonably they could have penetrated the mass market of WalMart shoppers and focused on bulk to keep their status where it once was.

Zach Morgan April 24th, 2010 at 18:57
This just seems to be such a different market for them that it would not be in their best interest. They made a huge impact with the market that they were in that I think it would have been a better decision to just stick with the type they are well known for.

Mahmod Alrawi April 25th, 2010 at 19:12
i really dont think this is really gonna go anywhere….who wants to wear crocs whenever they think of high heels….but what do i know, im just a guy….
-
Molly Longest April 25th, 2010 at 23:19
These actually aren’t as bad looking as I thought they would be. Being someone interested in fashion I think crocs did well with creating an attractive/comfortable shoe. They’re a little pricey for my likings but I would definitely try them out for a day. I know how painful high heals can be!

Krystal Anaya April 26th, 2010 at 14:41
i would never where crocs anywhere, even a garden. I think its smart of them to branch out to try to change their image but the high heels is a dumb idea. It is a completely different market and i believe it is too big of a jump and it will not work. Plus, they are really ugly and Crocs isn’t going to be able to reach to the market of girls that would spend 100 on shoes, and especially if they are that ugly.
-
Harsh Sanghvi April 26th, 2010 at 22:13
Crocs is going away from its main motive of comfort. I always thought that crocs were overpriced. They don’t even look that cool. It will be interesting to see how high heel sneakers work out.
-
Andrew Burke April 29th, 2010 at 18:00
They have to try to regain some of the market share somehow. Personally, I’m not a crocs fan, but I can respect their attempt to get back in the game. Whether or not it will actually be successful, however, is another question. Honestly, I don’t really see anyone running out to get a pair of high heel crocs, so I’m not too optimistic that this new product line will really help them all that much.
