  • Alibaba and you the entrepreneur

In China there is an internet giant named Alibaba Group whose chairman is a dude named Jack Ma. If you are even remotely considering anything entrepreneurial, you SHOULD study this man. A good start is the Wikipedia entry here: and/or the previous link to his name.

    From alibaba.com

One of his companies, alibabi.com provides a portal to global goods mainly from China that ANY entrepreneur worth their salt can tap into for potential import to the United States and sales at a profit – the essence of a new business startup. Let’s say for instance, that you wanted to start selling accessories for computers from your dorm room. You want small, relatively inexpensive, products that are differentiated from what’s available from Wal-Mart. See photo at left. Since students haven’t en mass embraced cloud concepts [that's a dig in case you missed it :-) ], you decide on USB thumb drives. From alibaba.com you ascertain that in quantities of 30 with shipping thrown in, you can buy these at about $9.00 per for 8 gigers. You even see in amazement that these are available in up to 128 gig capacities. Now you’re thinking WOW. What a great linux booting device one of these big hummers would make [you were guided in this thinking by your CS roommate]. See embed below. But you say, wait! I’m not into computer stuff, I just want to sell Hats & Stuff. Just like Apple’s iTunes store, there’s an app for that here. Look around alibaba.com; you’ll be glad you did! Hank

    1. Jack Ma seems like a very interesting person to watch for big ideas in the future. I am always hesitant about ordering things overseas. There are less restrictions on sales laws. Of course there is a huge location difference if something was to go wrong as well.

    2. This seems like a great website to help anybody kick start their business. This guy seems like a really smart guy.

alibaba.com is a quality website. Perfect for everyone who wants to shop for anything and everything

Jack Ma seems like he has accomplished a lot in his short lifetime. Capitalizing on cheap Chinese products and sending them to a market where prices are higher seems like a great way to make some quick cash.

    5. Hmmm….Time to go buy some USB drives then sell them to all of my friends for profit, haha!

    6. WOW, it is interesting to see a Chinese entrepreneur in this class. He is a well-known person in China. Many Chinese young people admire him and consider him as learning model. Before he opened up his own business, he suffered a lot and never gave up. Finally, his business is successful. I think the alibabi is a great website. It collects small businesses together and becomes a great website.

    7. I was looking for a website like this. I wish they had cuter things though.

    8. This is such a cool way to get a business started and order stuff online. He is a very successful entrepreneur.

    9. Im not much of a shopper online because of various amounts of reasons, but this isnt such an bad idea of this upcoming entrepreneur. Wish him the best of luck!!!

    10. pretty cool website….some of these things coming from china are like 5dollars!!! im not sure how they are even making profits with those deals especially when the same accesory here sells for like 60. plus shipping…im not sure how they do that…

    11. A man in his position that has found a way to make things cheap enough for other entrepreneurs to take notice has found a good niche in the market.

    12. This is a neat way to spark a fuse to begin a business. He has a great idea and will be very successful if carried out methodically.

    13. This would be totally awesome if I was trying to become an entrepreneur

    14. Casey Piquette

This is a really cool website. With globalization, it is so easy for someone like a college student to do business internationally and make money in the US. Very cool!

    15. Love this idea! It makes starting your own business a little less daunting and a little more realistic for your average college student. I’m inspired.

    16. alibaba.com is truly an awesome site. On the side note if you want to order really really cheap stuff from the internet but don’t mind waiting for a month for it to arrive (coz it arrives directly from china) check out http://www.meritline.com or http://www.dealextreme.com

Jack Ma seems like a very provocative individual. This concept it wonderful and it certainly helps entrepreneurs to start a business.

This seems telly cool to have availiable for people. Hopefully this is not on of those things that is too good to be true.

    19. This is a great site. My family buys a lot of stuff online and this one is definitely worth trying. It looks similar to EasyStreet website business which we use a lot. Here is a link:

    20. Interesting ideas. Thanks Hank

    21. This is an interesting website. It provides a different shopping experience and this is why it is successful. It allows you to be your own businessman straight from your apartment. I have a lot of respect for Jack Ma and it seems like his hardwork paid off

    22. very cool. definitely going to check out this website for by business

    23. That USB is a unique design. I bet there are tons of other websites around that can serve as a supply to one’s small business; ebay can be used as another means to sell things like this if it isn’t already seen there.

    24. Alibaba.com seems like a great website for upcoming entrepreneurs. It seems though that there are too many pointless products.

    25. I’m not sure if this is truly entrepreneurial. If you were to simply resell items you buy from this mass distributor you are simply just reselling. The service is nothing new and has no innovative aspects. Yes it could be a viable way to make some extra cash but I do not believe it should be considered a entrepreneurial venture.

    26. interesting, but your still a salesman at the end of the day…nothing more. nothing creative like the guy who invented pancake batter in a can. heck the pet rock was more creative than reselling cheap chinese products

    27. I am really impressed with the whole idea of alibaba. It is perfect for small manufacturers who want to go international and don’t have enough funds for marketing etc.

    28. I think that it is incredible to see a company of this nature. I think that often times, we are so “googleized” that we often forget that their are other giants internationally. And with the 30 million that alibaba is investing in global markets, it might just be the next great company.

    29. Blake Bronowicki

Jack Ma seems like a very interesting, creative person that really took his ideas and made a name for himself. If anyone is starting to get their business rolling, this would be the man to talk to. When it comes down to producing products that can be replicated, it really relies on the creativity behind it to make a difference in the market place.

    30. Jack Ma really does seem like an amazing guy. I really do plan on reading up more about this guy because I would like to know the ins and outs of how he became so successful. If you ask me, it’s crazy to see how people just have these little ideas, then it ends up turning into this massive international product that sweeps the world. It just amazes me.

    31. I think that China is the best place for mass production because labor is so much cheaper than here in the United States.

    32. Curtis Brackett

Definitely a solid website to shop at. Also, Hank is right, there is a great opportunity for aspiring entrepreneurs to get their first business going by ordering bulk amounts of highly sought items such as USB drives and sell them at a mark up here in the states. Hank’s always thinking about how to make money—smart guy.

    33. That’s a very interesting idea. If I were still living in the dorms, I would certainly consider buying some of these products and selling them at a considerable markup. Might be a little shady (can’t really think of the term for this), but as long as there’s nothing illegal about it, it would have the potential to be a legit business.
