What Have You Done Lately?:The Engineer Song by Mary & Elizabeth says it all
Posted on December 4th, 2011 10 comments
Normally I would run the following as a “Have A Happy Friday,” post, but it’s too uber and I know Purdue students will be heading out for Christmas break soon. I received the following email from a Navy colleague of mine recently and received his permission to post the video:“My granddaughter Mary and her project partner designed and built an electric guitar for their high school Math Engineering and Science Applications class. They also designed and built the pickup. Pictures are attached. They also created and sang a song for the guitar. It is also attached. The alphabet characters in the lyrics are for the cords for the song.”

Mary Kwiatkowski (picture to right) and Elizabeth Hilstrom (the project partners), not only were very creative in authoring and staring in The Engineer Song, THEY ALSO DESIGNED AND BUILT THE ELECTRONICS AND THE GUITAR THE SONG WAS BACKED BY!!!! Mary was 16 at the time, and a high school junior. Kudos to the young ladies, their parents, teachers, and a learning environment supportive of such effort. It’s students like Mary and Elizabeth that MIT and Purdue sorely need. You go girls. And yes Gene and Bev, you have ample reason to be very proud! Hank

This is extremely clever. I myself made an electric guitar for a class at my middle school where we got to make an instrument and I know how hard the process can be. Sounds great though. I really liked the lyrics of the song too because it describes a lot of what I do actually so I got a kick out of it. Excellent video.

On another note…. Am I the only one picking up their guitar and learning the song?

Thank you so much for putting my song up here! It was a lot of fun to make and sing and I hope everyone enjoys it!

Wow, to have built this guitar for a class is quite amazing. I liked that the video actually showed the notes to play, kind of like a sing-a-long and a “play-a-long.” I’m not musically talented, nor an engineer, but I thought this was cool. Must have taken lots of work! Good job ladies.

This is great work, especially for high school students doing a project. People like this is what we need in our society today. Great song that anyway can enjoy and sing along to. Great job ladies, very well done.

Oh Wow !!! Great job Mary ! The song sounds really good. Its so cool that a school is encouraging their students to get this creative. There was never anything like this at my school. What a great way to foster creativity and entrepreneurship !

I am in the same boat with Saskia on this one, my high school didn’t offer many opportunities like this. It is awesome that you had this experience, Mary! Love to see engineering and entrepreneurship combined.

This is a really clever idea. For someone that age to make their own electric guitar is amazing. The song is good too and i really enjoyed the lyrics. Well done

I agree with what Jacob has said above, my high school never gave me a opportunity do to something like this. This product creation and idea is amazing, I hope there entrepreneurial abilities continue as well as engineering.

I wonder how many readers understood all the terms in the song and on on the guitar. Better yet, I wonder how many GOOGLED the terms that were new to them. After all, this was a learning exercise for everyone.
