  • What are your thoughts about this half-time commercial?

Posted on February 7th, 2012 admin 12 comments

The powerful Chrysler commercial featuring tough guy Clint Eastwood has many speculating about what it really meant.  Some viewed it as an optimistic look at the future of America:  This country can’t be knocked out with one punch. We get right back up again and when we do the world is going to hear the roar of our engines”.   Many others have suggested that it was an endorsement for the Obama administration.  The ‘half-time-in-America” they say, is actually Obama’s half-time, and so he should be re-elected for a second term to finish what he started.  The Raw Story, a website that bills itself a “progressive news site” reads   “Super Bowl commercials have become a pastime in America — to some, they’re as entertaining as the year’s big game. Sunday night’s annual affair was no different, but one ad stood above the rest, imparting a message of national unity and hope that could have come straight from President Barack Obama’s reelection campaign,” wrote Stephen Webster. “Only, the ad was placed by Chrysler, and meant to sell cars, not a candidate.”

Though a past supporter of the Republican Party, Clint Eastwood claims to be a Libertarian.  He’s been quoted as saying “I like the libertarian view, which is to leave everyone alone” and I’ve always considered myself too individualistic to be either right-wing or left-wing.”  As recently as last year, Eastwood was criticizing President Obama’s 2009 bailout of the auto industry, which set the stage for Chrysler’s resurgence. “I’m a big hawk on cutting the deficit,” Eastwood told the Los Angeles Times in November. “I was against the stimulus thing too. We shouldn’t be bailing out the banks and car companies. If a CEO can’t figure out how to make his company profitable, then he shouldn’t be the CEO.

What do you think was Chryslers true intended message? Was this ad campaign a success?  Beth Carroll

    1. I think Chryslers true message was to show that they have been through tough times and they got through them. I think they wanted to hit home that they understand everyone’s struggles right now, they’ve been there. I think they want to show America that they made it and we can too. We should invest in their cars. I don’t think it had a hidden meaning with Obamas reelection. If it did, then I’m wrong obviously. If it did I also think that’s a little tacky during the super bowl. Overall I do think this ad was a success. If anything it grabbed the viewers attention and made them stop and listen.

To me, Chrysler’s message was intended to show that they have overcome the hardships of the economy and that they have started producing quality vehicles once more. I don’t believe that the commercial was an endorsement for the Obama administration, but I do believe it was a success.

Chrysler was trying to show America that they managed to survive and pull through, and that America as a whole can do the same. However, they were only able to survive because Obama bailed them out. So I see it as a promotional commercial for Obama by basically saying “Obama saved us, re-elect him so that he can save America.” Either way, for Obama or not, the commercial was a success.

    4. Chrysler’s message to me during this commercial was just a way to prove to the auto industry and world that they are still competing and are even competing at a higher level than in the past. The commercial to me has nothing to do with endorsing Obama or anyone. I believe that they (Chrysler) were and are playing with American’s emotions to make them think about them as a company and brand. I think the main goal of any advertising is to get the business or product name out there. I believe Chrysler was very successful in that because still today we are talking about Chrysler and cannot hardly remember any other automotive commercial from the Super Bowl. So as far as I am concerned, Chrysler is open to any interpretation as long as their name is linked and thought about as well.

    5. I think the add had a double meaning. One being clearly that Chrysler and the Detroit motor industry is ready to fight back, also I think this advertisement is telling Americans that they are going through tough times with unemployment being high and recently when America lost their financial ratings. Clint Eastwood is trying to reassure Americans that it’s only half time and there is more than enough time for America to fight back.

    6. I really liked the commercial, it was pretty long too which gave it enough time to really build up to the point of the commercial. America.

    7. Because of the recent years, when people think of Detroit, they think of a bad economy and an overall failing motor city. I think this commercial was to show America that Detroit is making a substantial comeback in the past months. I think the overall message was to show America that it is possible to fight out of tough situations and that Detroit/Chrysler was moving in the right direction.

    8. I think Chrysler is trying to gain the admiration of the nation by making a patriotic commercial. They say that yes, America can take a punch but we can definitely punch back too. I agree with Clay when he says that they are portraying that Detroit/Chrysler itself are making comebacks in the industry. Above the recession, failing economy, bailouts, etc. Americans have this unconditional,all-forgiving pride in our country and this commercial appeals to that. Like I said, Chrysler appeals to the viewers’ pathos and then attaches their name to the campaign strategically. I do not think that this ad is in any way advocating a presidential candidate, I just think its advocating an America thats gaining strength. I think Chrysler did make a successful ad because they attached their name to the pride factor that Americans hold close to their hearts.

    9. I think its a great idea how Chrysler is marketing Detroit almost more than the actual car. These commercials make you want to root for the underdog and help pull them up and succeed by buying Chrysler. Great advertising

I really think people are reading to much into the commercial. I think it was a great Chrysler advertisment and not a presidential campaign promotion. This commercial was ment to give a sense of inspiration and strenght (as well as trying to infuses those characteristics in the company and it’s cars).

    11. This was a very interesting commercial. There were many messages given in this 2 minute commerical. I think the commercial was trying to tell us that we are always at half time in some point in our life. Everyone has a moment in their life where they have a decision to make as to should they give up or drive forward. Life is an adventure. It’s different for everyone but with the will power to work hard, everyone can get through downfalls in relationships, the workforce and in school. This commercial related to everything you can think of because without a little struggle you will never have the room to grow and learn and become better.

    12. I think this commercial was presented at the right time. Since right now our unemployment rate is quite high and this commercial sort of let people know that there are people in society trying to solve the issue. I think the overall commercial has great meaning.
