Who do you reach with QR codes?
Posted on February 15th, 2012 3 comments
It should be a given by now that readers of this blog are familiar with QR (Quick Response) codes that are cropping up everywhere. For those of you who want/need background, go here:
Marketing Charts recently made the above chart available to their subscribers. What does it suggest? While males and females are equally likely to be awar
e of QRs, men are almost twice as likely to use them (28% to 16%) compared to females. While age groups 18-50+ have almost the same awareness, the group 18-34 year olds are over four times more likely (30% to 7%) to use them than the 50+ group. So if your target market is relatively young males, QR Codes may be an effective communication tool. Over the past summer i worked for an international company who was planning on using qr codes as payment methods where it would create a one time, time stamped, personal QR code to be linked with a bank account, credit card, or debit card. It was a great concept and I got to see it actually in action and work and be apart of it.
So we reached consumers, businesses, many people to be honest and it would work for everyone too.

I find this information very interesting and useful for companies. QR codes are still relatively new, and I have a QR scanner app for my phone but have yet to use. However, I am aware of QR codes. I feel as a female I fit with this graph. For some reason I am not as surprised to find out that guys will use a QR code more often than girls. Now that companies have this information, companies and products more marketed towards men should use more QR codes. Also, it is maybe suggesting that they should make QR codes more interesting for girls.

I think qr codes are still a bit clunky. But the numbers don’t lie, but are not particularly surprising either. Young people adopt the new “tech” first. Even if your target market is young females, I don’t think you should overlook qr, simply because you get, even if it is just 16% of the people interested in your product, a substantial number of people to that second level of marketing. Which is huge. You know they are interested, you just have to finish the sale at that point.
More important than gender is the type of person that is using qr codes. The only people I know that use them I describe as geeks. That should be taken into account when considering their use. But then, they are so easy and cheap for an advertiser to set up, you really might as well just do it, even if your target market is not in the bullseye of qr code users.
