We don’t always think of entertainers as entrepreneurs, but they are.  Their product is themselves, or the persona they’ve created.    It’s fascinating to see what some people are able to create out of their own imagination.  Here is a story of a kid from Toronto with a passion for electronic music:

Joel Thomas Zimmerman (born January 5, 1981), better known by his stage name deadmau5 (pronounced “dead mouse”), grew up in Niagara Falls, Ontario, near Toronto. As a kid he was obsessed with computers and started making chip tunes as a teenager. “They’re musical compositions made using the chips from old computers,” he explains. Soon, his chip tunes attracted the attention of the Los Angeles nu metal community which resulted in him contributing to Mötley Crüe drummer Tommy Lee’s 1999 album Methods Of Mayhem.  Deadmau5 debut the album, Get Scraped,  in 2006, followed by others in the next few years.  The name “deadmau5″ originated when Zimmerman claimed to have found a dead mouse in his computer while replacing his video card. He discussed this with chat room users and became known as “that dead mouse guy.” The nickname “Deadmouse” was too long for the chat server, so he shortened it to deadmau5 (A form of leet spelling).

This kid somehow managed to create a successful business with big eared head gear that looks a lot like a mouse from Disney.  Deadmau5 has released 5 studio albums which have sold in the millions.   He has received numerous awards and was nominated for 4 Grammy’s.  He has close to 5 million likes on Facebook, a million followers on Twitter, packs the house with every live concert performance and sells a ton of Deadmau5 merchandise.  He’s a talented musician, a great entertainer, and a pretty amazing entrepreneur.  Just don’t call him a DJ. 1. I’ve been following deadmau5 for quite a while now, and he is a perfect example of music. He started by simply doing something he loved, and with passion and luck he managed to create a successful “brand” of music. I know most people don’t think that music can be entreprenurial, but personally I feel like each new genre is like a new business. It’s original untapped potential that someone out there will enjoy. Just like a new business there is that risk that people won’t like what an artist has to offer, but it’s surprising just how far passion can carry someone.

    2. Personally I love deadmau5 and was excited to see your article on him. There is no doubt that he is an entrepreneur. 5 or 6 years ago when he started making his songs, there was no other sound out there like his. Today, you can find his songs basically at any dance party. Not only did he start a business (like all musicians- marketing themselves, while making money doing shows and making music), he started a whole new genre that has evolved into a very popular music scene in the present day.

    3. I personally had never heard of this guy or his music. Maybe I have before, but wasn’t aware that it was him. I definitely think entertainers are entrepreneurs because like you said they’re talent themselves is what they are selling. I think it’s awesome that this guy has been so successful. Not really a fan of his name, but wouldn’t stop me from listening to him. He’s clearly an extremely talented guy.

    4. I am actually going to a concert in chicago which is the same type of music as dead mau5. its a member of a band called swedish house mafia, and the dj is ingrosso, it’s this weekend in chicago. i didn’t even know of this music before this year until my roommate always listens to it now. now i listen to it all the time, i love the beat and sounds and the mixes they put together.

    5. I like the music, but I still think the giant foam head is kinda…cheesy. It’s probably a very successful form of branding, worked well for Walt Disney, as long as some little tike doesn’t confuse him with Mickey. That could be weird.

    6. The first time I saw/heard Deadmau5 was during the MTV awards a few years back when he played music during commercials. I’ve listened to him before and watched some of his performances on Youtube, but he isn’t someone thats on my iPhone. He’s definitely an original artist and mouse head just helps him differentiate himself from other artists in his genre which I think makes him an entrepreneur in itself. He’s obviously successful too, as you can see from videos, the places are packed!
